the franchise since it begun. A while ago bio ware said something about player
feed back on the next mass effect game and I felt like getting my ideas out
somewhere. It’s a lot of reading but I
hope some will take the time to at least skim through. Keep in mind it’s
a very rough draft version. There are probably spelling mistakes and a few
holes here and there. This is just a general outline of how to set up another
game after mass effect 3 that works with the three endings. I hope to receive a
lot of comments but I hope you will keep clean and not be too negative. If you
don’t like what I say that’s fine tell me you don’t like it in a civilized
manner please. And id love to hear anyone else’s ideas about the next game or
any ideas on how to improve my own.
This game takes place roughly two hundred years after the
end of mass effect 3 although I haven’t worked out any exact time line. In this
game the player either uploads a save file or chooses what happened in the
third mass effect game to give this game a background. Here is the set up with
a small intro and then what each ending would have done to set up this game.
Its been two hundred years since many brave heroes gave their
lives in the battle with the sentient organic machines known as Reapers. In the
final battle for the galaxy Commander (players picked name i.e. John) Shepard
activated an experimental device known as the crucible. It is unknown exactly
what took place aboard the device but the aftermath of Shepard’s decisions is
well known by all.
Here is the set up depending on which of the three choices
was made at the end of the third game. Note that the choices are going to make
you have the best outcome of each choice (such as assume you saved both he Geth
and Quarians and etc.)
Destroy: The crucible fired out a massive amount of energy
that attacked synthetic life across the stars. The energy “killed” the Reapers
and also all high end synthetics across the stars including the AI race known
as the Geth and all other AI beings. The mass effect relays that were the main
form of transportation had been also destroyed in the blast however the manner
in which they were destroyed was more of a disassembly. The races of the galaxy
were able to examine the parts of the relays and along with tech they gathered
from the dead Reapers they were able to repair the Relay system and in extent
the examination of the relays lead to major advances in ship FTL space drives.
For the first time the galaxy was peaceful with all races working together to
repair the damage done by the war. It appeared that organics had won. The Geth
who had helped fight the Reapers in the last battle were resurrected by their
makers the Quarians and lived peacefully along side each other as if they were
family. Shepard’s body was found in the rubble of the crucible that had tumbled
to earth. A memorial statue of him now stands on the very spot where he was
found.
Control: The crucible fired and energy coursed throughout
the galaxy but instead of destroying the reapers as organics had thought it
would it instead took control of them. The Reapers now were at the control of
Shepard… or some AI version of him. He assured the races of the galaxy that he
would take up the role of protector of the galaxy. With the army of Reapers he
made repairs to the massive damage that had been caused in the war and for
years the galaxy experienced the greatest time of peace ever… however Shepard
soon began to change. Being one with the Reapers, his consciousness began to
absorb the evil nature of the sentient machines and slowly darkness rose in his
core processing unit, also known as what had been his heart. When a colony of
humans broke out in revolution against the alliance Shepard sent a reaper unit
there to pacify the people… but his compassion and humanity had all but been
lost so when his forces arrived they massacred the thousands of people,
including women and children of the planet… all at Shepards bidding. The Galaxy
was appalled by the actions taken and it was soon apparent another war was
about to happen. However some part of Shepards humanity must have still
remained for he saw the crimes he had committed and realized what he was
becoming. Shepard saw only one way to protect the galaxy from himself… he sent
every last reaper force in existence into the nearest star, obliterating the
entirety of the Reapers. It is unknown what happened to Shepard but some
speculate that he was tied with the reapers and when they died so did he.
Others say that his consciousness still roams somewhere out there and that he
has shut himself away from the galaxy to prevent himself from harming them
anymore.
Synthesize: The crucible fired shooting out a blast of
energy that gripped every being in the galaxy. The very DNA of all races was
changed and organics and synthetics became one. A greater understanding of one
another came and peace flourished. The Reapers worked to help the galaxy return
to the state it was in before the war. However some were repulsed by the change
that had taken them. They said that the galaxy had lost its soul and even with
immortality they were doomed. Religion spread fear about the new form of
organics, saying that now we were all machines and that god would never allow
us to enter the after life. The Reapers, deciding that the galaxy no longer
needed them disappeared into the blackness of space. What happened to them is
unknown and some still believe they could someday return. However the galaxy
could not except its state and After years a great many believed in returning
to organics and synthetics. The idea came then that if the crucible had made
them perhaps it could unmake them. So it was that some decided to build a
second crucible. After years of tests and experiments the answer was found and
a way to turn back the code of DNA brought to light. It was then up to the
galaxy to choose what to do, stay in the state of synthesized organic and
machine components or return to their natural state. The decision wasn’t made
for another year until finally it was decided that the people of the galaxy
should return to normal and that those who wished to be synthesized would have
to find a way to accomplish this without forcing it upon the entire galaxy. And
so once again DNA was changed back. Now people and machines were again separate
but a certain understanding still remained. Some still work to find a way to
synthesize themselves again without turning the entire galaxy. Shepard is still
applauded as a hero by all for ending the Reaper war and bringing a greater
understanding of all to the galaxy.
Then after whichever ending happened: Peace, however strong,
could not last forever. War slowly made its way back. Tension rose as: The
krogan expanded, rachni colonized planets in the galaxy again, Pirates raided
colonies, the terminus system began to form a government under the iron foot of
Aria Tiloke, and the council still looked after only themselves. When a rouge
rachni element attacked a human colony the avalanche started. Humanity fought
off the rachni however it was found out that a Turian patrol on council
business had been only moments away and had done nothing under the order of the
council. When humanity questioned the council they simply stated that it was
not their responsibility to protect every human colony. Outraged, the Human
Systems Alliance declared it would no longer be a part of the council and would
not participate in joint operations with the rest of the council races anymore.
The krogan, who after years of trying to gain equality were still rejected from
the council, threatened to go to war if they were not respected. The council
did not budge and so began a new war between the council and the krogan.
Although not as brutal as the krogan rebellions the war still had great costs.
Also at this time Humanity began a war with rachni who were making an incursion
into there space. A summit between the krogans and humans was called. The
krogans beat the council on the ground but in space they were out matched while
humanity could profit greatly from having krogan shock troops to hold the line
against the rachni. So a deal was struck and thus began the longest war in the
history of the galaxy. Humanity would reinforce the krogan in space and the
krogan would do the same for humanity on the ground. Over the next several
years the war waged on with all sides taking hits. However when things seemed
to be winding down a new fighter entered the ring. Aria Tiloke, who now was the
Empress of the Terminus, led an invasion into asari space. Aria’s army of
pirates overran many of the initial asari defenses. The asari requested help
from the turians but with the krogan and humans working together the turians
just couldn’t spare the soldiers. So the asari were forced to pull their troops
from council business to protect their own people. The turians requested
additional support from the salarians who declined, not wanting to waste
anymore of there own in what they called a war that had nothing to do with
them. It was then that the council officially fell to ruin and was disbanded.
It was every race for its self now.
The war waged on in that way until the rachni who had been
fighting the humans and krogan where whipped out. This led to the humans no
longer needing the krogan and the agreement had only been until one side no
longer needed the other. Humanity announced to the krogan that it would be
pulling its troops out of the war with the turians. Without the human armada to
back them up the krogan once again began losing in space. The Turians used this
to their advantage and were able to greatly disrupt krogan troop supply lines.
Meanwhile Aria found herself in trouble. Her forces were hard to control for
they lacked most military discipline. The asari were calm and a strong unit in
battle while her soldiers were a trigger-happy rabble comprised of vorcha and
batarians mostly. But her troubles really began when pirates under her flag attacked
a quarian planet. The pirates killed hundreds of quarians and took several
dozen captive in the raid. The geth, who had become something of family to the
quarians, immediately sent a fleet of ships to rescue the hostages and to
finish the pirates. When the geth boarded the pirate vessel they found they had
come too late. The hostages had resisted the pirates in a valiant attempt for
freedom but had been gunned down to the last women and child. The geth felt
something as they looked upon the bodies of the quarians that they didn’t fully
understand. Infuriated by the pirates the geth launched a full assault into
Arias controlled section of the terminus with the mission of eradicating the
pirates down to the last. Aria now found herself fighting on two fronts. On one
against the great biotic powers of the asari, and on the other against the
unrelenting strength of the synthetic soldiers of the geth. She made the
decision then to stop her attack on the asari. The asari took back there
planets but did not pursue aria into the terminus but they did declare her a
galactic war criminal and never to be allowed into asari space again. Meanwhile
the krogan and turians were at a stalemate. The krogans had pulled back and set
up heavy defenses on their outer colonies and the turians formed a blockade
in-between turian and krogan space. No peace treaty was ever signed and even
today the krogan clans and turian empire are still at war although there hasn’t
been a battle in decades. Aria and the geth battled for months in a bloody war.
The geth pushed back the pirates inch by inch and the war would have gone on
for years had the quarians not intervened. They asked the geth to return to
quarian space, saying that those who had committed crimes against the quarian
people had been brought to justice and the pirates would think twice before
ever attacking again. The geth did not want to leave but they held the quarians
in high regard and came to the consensus to call off what was now being called
the geth crusade.
And so ended the Galactic War. The council was no more and
neither treaties nor alliances remain. For over a century there has been a
stale peace between all races. However there is a new enemy lurking in the
shadows, preparing to ignite the tension and bring the galaxy to its knees.
This is just the set up for the game and the game can be
anything. The way I would want the game to start though is for the player to be
able to pick between the races of the galaxy. Much like in dragon age one
style. The player could pick a race, play through the starting zone of that
race and then all races would have the same basic story after they got out of
their starting zone. This would be great because players would finally be able
to experience other races more ineptly. Also this would affect the story. the
race you pick would be your first great decision of the story. For example if
you picked a turian you will have very different interactions with a krogan
than would say a human. This may seem like a lot more work to set up but really
it wouldn’t. You would just have to have a voice for each races male and
female, then have a last name for each different race that all the npc’s can
use to address player. Then as the player advances in the story they would have
varied interactions every now and then. Not everything would be different and
the ending wouldn’t be massively affected by the players race. However players
would be much more inspired to play through the game multiple times,
experiencing the different races and seeing how being a different race effects
different situations.
The races I would like to see playable would be: Human,
Turian, Krogan, Asari, Salarian, Quarian, Batarian, and Drell. Now if not all
those made it that would be fine, but I for one would really like experiencing
all those races and seeing more of their lives. Each race could have different
access to different classes, and maybe different perks such as a quarian would
make a better engineer than the other races while asari make great biotics.
Now the story could be a great many thing but here is just a
little description of something I picture that would be fun
For whatever reason each race will leave their starting
place not aligned to any government. Whether they are mercenary, bounty hunter,
refugee, criminal, or on a quarian pilgrimage the player will come to some
planet and trouble will ensue. The planet is a hive of criminals and people
with no other place to go(probably somewhere in the terminus) A lot of action
and character development and making a few friends(companions). At some point
you run into an ex-specter. He/she is depressed, maybe heavily drinking, trying
to hold onto the past of when the specters used to be the arm of justice in the
galaxy. After a while you become buds and join forces in taking on the troubles
of the planet. Then the specter stops being so depressed for you the player
have shown him/her what its like to make a difference again. So the specter
asks you to join him/her and together bring the specters back to the galaxy but
this time not as the right hand of some government but as a protector of
innocents and destroyer of wicked. An order of warriors who answer to no one
and every one at the same time. (pretty much a vigilantes)
Now your player gets a ship somehow. Steals it, buys it,
finds it, just gets a ship. One way that would be cool and let the franchise
keep that great stealth attribute of the ship would be: Some great crime lord
on the planet has stolen the actual Normandy from mass effect three from an
alliance museum dedicated to Shepard and his crew(maybe the player could even
visit this museum at some point for a walk down memory lane). The crime lord
has fixed up the Normandy and plans to sell the working stealth ship that once
was at the command of the great Shepard. You have learned about this from your
specter buddy who still has a few sources to call on. You steal the ship and
make a powerful enemy of the crime lord as well as the ships intended buyer,
Aria Tiloke. That will probably be a problem in the future but right now it
doesn’t concern you. Your mission now which will be the main influence in thee rest
of the game is to gather worthy individuals to join you and become specters.
I haven’t really been able to decide on a main antagonist
plot yet so maybe somebody can give me some ideas but I do know that the player
should assemble the biggest crew of any mass effect game. Not only are they
assembling companions but also they need a crew for the Normandy as one will
not be given to you in this game and how well you are able to assemble the
Normandy’s crew will effect the end of the game outcome. (obviously you and the
Specter already gathered the crew members such as the pilot that you would need
to operate the ship before you steal it). Another thing is that the crews in
the past have always been all human but in this game you can get other races.
For instance say you saved a group of quarian engineers and they offer to join
you ship crew. And you know in mass effect two how when you and all your
companions left the Normandy and it got boarded by collectors? Your security
force got destroyed. Well imagine if you had had a couple krogan soldiers and
perhaps an asari commando squad as part of your security force? Those
collecters would have had an actual fight on there hands. That’s why assembling
your own crew would be fun.
As for companions you should get a lot of them! In my
opinion companions are the best part of mass effect games. They have there own
likes, dislikes, flaws and backgrounds. Getting to know and becoming
friends(and sometimes lovers) with your companions is fulfilling and fun. I
think that the companions Must be one of the biggest focus of the game
designers. The player needs to feel for his companions, love them, hate them it
doesn’t matter as long as the player actually feels something about a
companion. I know that when I care about my companions it makes the game so
much more enjoyable and immersive. Also another thing about companions is that
they shouldn’t all disappear at the end of the game. It doesn’t make sense for
a bunch of your characters to do nothing when the player is on the most
important mission of the game. If you don’t want companions to be there give a
reason why. Like “This mission is going to require stealth which is why only a
few of you will accompany me.” this simple statement lets the player know why
his companions wont be there. I'm not asking for everything to spelled out just
for me to know why my group of highly trained friends is off playing cards on
the Normandy while I’m battling for the universe.(I mean what else could my
team have been doing at the end of Mass effect three when Shepard was stumbling
along alone? The only thing I can think of that would stop Garrus and Vega from
having my back would be if Tali, Liara and Ashley were getting naked in a game
of strip poker) And If the last mission is large enough let all the companions
join the character. What would be so wrong with a dozen companions at your back
at one time? If not do what happened at the end of mass effect two and split
into groups to accomplish the mission.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and again I look
forward to any feedback, good or bad. I doubt this will ever be a game but I
feel if we discuss it in a serious manner and come up with an idea that
satisfies mostly everyone then bioware could at least take some of this. If not
im just glad to have gotten my ideas down and hope any of you who read it
enjoyed it
