I gotta say it... but lets be honest.. 2012 was a crappy year for gaming. ME3 won the majority of its awards not because it was amazing but because everything else was just worse.

interesting perspective.

I'm interested in what makes it so interesting.

You're absolutely right. Far Cry 3, Dishonored, Journey, The Walking Dead, Assassin's Creed 3, XCOM, Halo 4, Sleeping Dongs, Kingdoms of Amalur, Borderlands 2, Spec Ops, Diablo 3 and of course Mass Effect 3... all are absolutely and utterly terrible.

Oh wait...

The lengths some people go to get in just another stab at ME3 is astounding. :pinched: If you hate it so much, why are you even here?

Anyways, congrats BioWare and I'm really looking forward to the new SP and MP DLCs!:)

And Mr. Gamble, shouldn't you be in bed by now?;)

Sorry which of those games are actually RPGs to contenst against Mass Effect? (I don't see why Mass Effect is even allowed to be called an RPG (unless choosing a colour is massive choice) but thats just my opinion)

Is Halo 4 an RPG? No.
Is Assassin's Creed 3? No.
Far Cry 3 an RPG? No again.

So what exactly was really contensting this "game" in the RPG field? Pretty much nothing then?

If there was a Fallout out this year, or a proper Fable, or a new Witcher, or a new Elder Scrolls, everybody would have had a small laugh about this "game" ('joke of a game' if you're not feeling polite) and forgotten about it. because that is all it should have really earnt.

It would be like saying what an absolutely smashing job a new FPS shooter had done in revolutionising the shooter genre, in the same year that there wasn't a COD, or Halo, or a Battlefield, or any other real FPS to contest it.

The fact you're comparing this, a super high budget AAA title, to an interactive storybook essentially, which was what the Walking Dead was, and it was still amazing and far better, shows how low this game has fallen.

I was responding to Xellith's post which was about the gaming year 2013 in general. I know that Halo 4 is not an RPG, thank you.

And yeah, choosing from three colors was the only RPG element in ME3.

Mass Effect 3's competition wasn't exactly fierce in 2012, you gotta admit. Diablo 3 probably was it's only competition as a RPG, but the game was a mess and a disappointment.

Xenoblade Chronicles was a much better RPG. The problem was not many people played it and it was exclusive to the Wii. Had XC been marketed better and released on more than one platform, it most likely would've won more Best Rpg awards.

ME3 winning among RPGs is expected. I would be surprised if it wouldn't, because Diablo 3 was the first Blizzard's failure... if you think BSN is bad, you really should check the D3 forums from time to time ;)

As expected, it's not a GOTY material.

I am also pleased that X-COM got best strategy award and gameplay engineering. I sure do hope that thanks to that I will see some more high budget games with TBC as I have enough FPS/TPS action games in my library... to a point that hardly any interests me at this point

There is a list with awards here too:

Btw, and i hate to make a third post so quickly, but this same website gave The Old Republic the "Outstanding Achievement in Online Gameplay" award last year. Ya know, the same MMO that went F2P in less than a year?

So how much credibility does DICE have again?

Btw for the record, i don't listen to ANY video game awards that exist. They're all meaningless, especially when you have 100+ different websites/magazines that give them out. It really just comes down to people saying what their favorite game to play was this year. Just cause they own a review site though, doesn't make their opinion more credible than yours.

I agree that they aren't indicative of each individual's experiences. But there's a double standard here in that you'll listen to blogs and critics who point out the game's flaws.

It's the same song and dance on BSN. Any award given, even the people's choice ones, is apparently not credible because of raisins. Anyway, if they were truly meaningless then you wouldn't be scavenging for reasons to degrade the credibility of the award.

Maybe I missed the post, but no one here is using this award as cannon fodder against the game's critics. So really, there's no reason to be this defensive about it.

Well you look at reader and reviewer choice awards, and it's all over the place. Again this is because it pretty much comes down to personal opinions, and given how there are hundred(s) of these different awards from different sources, that's A LOT of different opinions.

As for listening to blogs and critics who point out a game's strengths and flaws. I've always been one to form my own opinion on things. The only person that gets me interested in something is myself. I don't really let other people influence my decision. I've learned to trust my own judgement on things, and 80-90% of the time i'm usually right on it. Of course there are times were people can change my mind, cause i'm not completely stubborn. There might be a game i'm not interested in, but if i see the game getting positive feedback from critics and gamers, then i give it another look.

In the case of Mass Effect 3, i had problems with the game even before i got to the ending. I was still having a fun experience, but there were several things that irked me and even flat out made me upset. Mostly over the direction the series had taken. But the last 2 hours were just completely underwhelming, and when the ending game, it just shattered me.

I would disagree...

It was a crappy year for RPGs, but not for gaming overall... The two biggest titles - ME3 and D3 were my personal biggest let downs... but among the two ME3 is in overall better.

There were some games which made me enjoy the story and were something fresh, for example "Of Orcs and Men", but generally other titles in RPG categoryy were simply uninteresting (to me at least)

On the other hand, in other generes there is a few really good titles- The Walking Dead, X-COM, CoD: BO2, Far Cry, just to name these few, but there are more.

Feel shame, Mike, shame! You worked on a critically aclaimed game that cleaned house at every awards ceremony it was within 50 feet of, but.... the competition! Oh, woes, the competition!

I know it was a 2011 game but Witcher 2 (360 enhanced edition) should have won RPG and GOTY. If not, then Halo 4 or Journey. Mass Effect 3, while a great game and I love it, isn't even in my top 3, maybe my top 5.

It didn't clean house, what are you talking about? Do you even know what that means?

Return of the King would be something that cleaned house at the oscars.

Whoever they are my point still stands. The fact they gave TOR that award, only shows that they're not all knowing and have better credibilty than any of us.
