Why do prequels never live up to expectations?
is it because we know how it ends?

I don't know what your talking about, there are some awesome prequels out there, some even better then the original title

More like it just can´t match whatever we imagined happened in between the original and the prequel. I doubt the PT would be that reviled if they had started to come out a couple of years after Return of the Jedi.

Terminator 2 was better than Terminator 1.
Then again, that was directed by James Cameron; Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 were directed by Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne.

This should work only with direct prequels which led to original story. (The things 2011).
But prequels using only same world and background with their own separate story can easily work very good (Deus Ex 3, GTA:Vice CIty or San Andreas).
