I name mine after family members and good friends--I live away from my them and, as I play MP on an almost daily basis, it helps me remember to think about them :-)

I've named most all of my characters after Bionicle characters. With color schemes to match.

I'm boring. I use names of Transformers (Devastator, my N7 Devastator. He's decked out in bright green and a purple that's pretty close to Decepticon purple), silly portmanteaus based on what I thought when I first saw the character (my Demolisher is named Campatron), and onomatopoeia based on the sound a power makes (one of my Humdepts is named Wub Wub Wub Wub).

I make the name based on the species.
Ie my fqe is named Qhiji, and my N7 demo is 085-Daniela

Used to go for reasonable actual names, now I go for for cool sounding codenames, as it were. OG humans still get NATO Phonetic Alphabet letters (i.e. Quebec the vanguard, Kilo the adept). Other examples would be Dustbowl the Turian Soldier, Hazard Pay the Krentinel, and Granite the Destroyer.

I name then after Mass Effect characters. Or other game characters. For example. Slayer: Kai Leng, Shadow: Jack (from the 'easter egg'?), Male Adept: John Shepard because that's my canon Shep
Then there is the Female Quarian Infiltrator who is named Ada Wong, and the engineer who I named Carla Radames.

I go through my gamut of names I've used in past/present RPGs, which wasn't as expansive as I'd hoped since I tend to stick to a couple of main characters (i.e. Toriah and Metandra). A lot of characters have woefully unimaginative names— like my ex-Cerberus guys are named after Grecian gods, my turian sentinel is named Tacitus, the human female engineer is named Glados. Then, sometimes, inspiration strikes me when I least expect it— my justicar named Atarias, the N7 Paladin named Luxideo, and now my new favorite quarian infiltrator named Daxi'Kalran. I try to stick with lore-compatible names but, sometimes, it just doesn't pan out! lol

I've named my human soldiers with names resembling spartan III's Like Neti-D238. Not the biggest halo fan, but the human soldiers look like spartans then anything else.
Everyone else, I find a humorously generic name like Bob, Dave, Sarah, Joe. etc etc.

I try to make the names fit lore and such, but I'm not sure Pann sounds very salarian-y infiltrator-y

I tend to name my characters in proper "roleplaying" fashion, things that fit with their race in universe. It is tough coming up with Turian and Quarian last names though so I have a lot of siblings in my roster. On the other hand the Krogan make things easy, clan Urdnot all the way!

I give them proper name and ranks, as real Army. For Human, Turian, Drell and Salarian
The Geth Has their number behind I:E
Geth Infiltrator ---> Blassritter27
And for Krogan, i always name them with Urdnot and their purpose
Krogan Vanguard: Urdnot Crash
I always thinking that Asari are strong women, so I always put Woman's name that has sense of strong Woman.
I treat human female same as the Asari
For Vorcha, i gave them name amtch their characteristic
For Volus, well.....Joke name

I go for RP names, too. For human characters I'll occasionally hit up behind the name for ideas.
I've found the most challenging characters to name well are Asari and Drell.

I only have conventions for Krogan
They are all Urdnot,
and then some random name
ex. Urdnot Dan
or Urdnot Vance

When I name my characters it all depends on the role that they play. My Asari Adept with Stasis is named June because she is just out of the maiden stage of life. I name most of my characters based on a story I have made up for them and how it relates to fighting in an all out galactic war.
But conversely some characters get funny or special names that make me giggle. My Batarian brawler is named Grogg Ulag because he reminds me of an orc berserker from Skyrim.
I also take some names from A Song of Ice and Fire. For instance...my Batarian soldier is Aegon. (Aegon the conquerer)
My volus sentinel is Han Rolo. He is a mercenary after all.
My Krogan Shaman is actually a female. Urdot Bakara's wrath has so much power she has to pull her punches and provide support as to not scare off potential friends.

For alien characters I go with what feels right, like "Sian" for my Quarian Soldier, but for the Geth I go with names of past gods that operated in groups, like "Sebitti" for my Geth soldier. Humans get nom de guerres.

I've no specific pattern. Except that I tend to name characters I know I'll never used with related surname and given name.
My Turian Sentinel for example is Roger Rogerson, and my Salarian Engineer Carl Carlson. I'm not sure why I do this, actually.

A thread like this made by a Bioware person
Now even I am freaked out
-
On-topic:
I name my characthers after anime characthers with cool names.
I've named the basic humans actual human-y names.

I name my characters the first word to come to mind when I create them; it would be nice if our characters' names showed up somewhere in-game (or even just in the lobby), though! I might try harder to think of interesting monikers.
As it is, my stream of consciousness has produced names ranging from the completely unimaginative (Krentinel and Molus) to the slightly less unimaginative (Harrus and Mangar), to the completely random (Beetle, Dippy, Quibbles, Kingly, and Toto).
I feel sorry for my future children, should I have any.
