All my Humans use normal, everyday human names. My aliens tend to use names that sound like they belong to that race, with the exception of my Batarians, who use the same names I use for any of my Orc characters on (*puts up flame shield*) World of Warcraft.

Don't ask why my Batarians are different on that account.

About half my characters names are taken from either Transformers, eg Barricade, Onslaught
or other games, eg War, Glacius.
The other half are generic like Asari Valkyrie is just Valkyrie, Sentinel, etc.

The only theme I have is with the asari, which I name after Greek goddesses.

The only other names I recall are:
GI - Geth 2.0 (after a respec)
SI - Ixnay
Shadow - Miho

I think I pretty much give the others plain names or just make up random names.

I have stories behind all my character name choices, so too much detail to go into here.

I try to use lore appropriate naming conventions where possible but not all races have a lot of NPCS to draw inspiration from. The exception to this is my four Voli are named after some of my favourite British actors/comedians (Vic, Bob, Fry, and Davies). While call signs sound like a cool concept, I haven't been too clever at finding ones to use though my human engineer is named Fixer (not to be confused with the clone from SW). My geth tend to have numbers in their names (Recon_42, Platform 314, Unit 1337).

But my absolute favourites (and is this any surprise?) are my turians. I only display their surnames in MP but have given them all first names too.

Turian Sentinel: Magnus Thorn

Turian Ghost Infiltrator: Cassius Aurelius
Turian Havoc Soldier: Lorne Octavius

I try to keep naming my characters as close to lore as I can, so yeah, I go with a first and last name for nearly all of the human characters, as well as the turian, asari, drell and the like, but I do make exceptions from time to time.

Geth: Named after Greek Mythology instead of "Unit #####" and all those generic names.

N7 Shadow: Given a call sign instead of a first and last name.

Krogan: Nearly my krogan are of Clan Urdnot, my Battlemaster is the one exception.

Quarian: Names are too long for first and last, so first name only.

I like naming min from little backstories I could make from them and names I've heard over the years. I go for more realistic-ish names according to species.

Makes me RP better in them.

Three of my Krogan are Urdnots: Urdnot Glurg (KS), Urdnot Skunge (KA), and Urdnot Kharn (KV). The lone outsider is the soldier whom I named Ghanvas Korg after an old analog synthesizer.

I used birth dates for Geth. Gave clan names to Krogen like Werloc Rall. Mixed and matched names from single player for Asari, Drell, Salarians, Volus, Batarians and Turians. I gave Vorcha names that are single words you might hear in a growl like Vrice or Slorn. For Humans I use names from across the globe. American, Russian, German, Chinese, Japanese, I have a international name dictionary. It helps. Also I have spent time in the U. S. Army serving with people with all sorts on intresting names.

Interesting how many people use MGS names... though I think the Shadow is more fitting to Gray Fox. Shadow is more about the sword and is a phantom reskin and phantoms hold their swords in a reverse grip...

Anyway like a lot of people, I use jokes and references to other things.  Just for lulz I'll list them:

Adepts:
Drell- Postal Dude (named after Postal 2 protagonist)
Justicar- H.TractsoLand (Monty Python boob joke. Recurring theme for asari)
Phoenix- Demopan (TF2 meme)
Fury- not-Kasumi (guess why?)
Volus- Yogurt (Spaceballs)

Soldier:
Turian-Biggus Dickus (Monty Python)
Krogan-Polite Krogan (initially was the Incredible Bulk but then I promoted and didn't remake him because I didn't like him. I've since come around and renamed him)
Batarian- Dan the Doom Imp (my batarians are named "doom imps" because they remind me of Doom3 imps. Every time I've promoted I've changed their 3-letter name as well)
Vorcha- Inferno (Beast Wars)
Destroyer Tony Downey Jr. (unoriginal reference to his Iron Man/War Machine tendencies)
Geth- Megabyte (Reboot; the color scheme worked out soo well for this one particularly with fortification making everything shiny)
Havoc- Jump'n'shoot Man (taken off one line of an Egoraptor video because I had nothing else).

Engineer
Fquarian- just remembered- Palmula Handers
Salarian- F.TalkHighTrou (short for Fast Talking High Trousers of Family Guy fame.)
Geth- Shockwave (Transformers)
Mquarian- IsSpy (because Engineer... IsSpy. TF2 in case you're wondering)
Demolisher- GuyInRealLife (no inspiration whatsoever)
Volus-The Giant Midget

A majority of the names came from the ME universe, I named five characters after the main dudes on Metalocalypse, some of them are referenced to power rangers, four of them are reference to X-Files. Naming my Shadow Beatrix from Kill Bill just fit you know.

Non-geth characters I care about: I normal take names from 40k.
Geth characters I care about: I name them after transformers.
Characters I don't care about: Something random and/or funny. Example, my ex-cerberus vanguard is named Light Bright.

All my asari have names from A Song of Ice and Fire, like Visenya and Rhaenys.

My favorite name is my bright yellow Shadow named Beatrix Kiddo.

I tend to go with just a surname, nickname, or something lore-ish sounding. Some examples off the top of my head:

Volus - Gir, Zim, Dib
Quarians - vas Qwib Qwib, vas Defrans, vas Eline
Geth - Geth, Geth, Geth
Shadow - Xena

and Durell the drell and T'liqua the asari, just because they sound awesomely ghetto.
