I wish naming characters wasn't pointless

Indeed. I wonder if it'd be possible to display current character names under our screenames in lobbies. Would make for some lulz.

Normally when I name characters I go for things that strike as silly and immature. I named my BF3 soldier McFrillypants, my krogan sentinel Urdnot Steve and my geth engineer platform 1337. Yeah I'm not very creative or smart.

Too bad we can't see other players' Character Names during games rather than just their GT.

Anyway, I try to be funny with several of mine, for example:

Krogan Shaman = Kroderp
Human Male Soldier = (Donovan Hock's Brother,) Mike Hock
Quarian Female Engineer = Jig Lee Buhm
Turian Sentinel = Krysae Moore (Cry some more)
N7 Shadow = May Lee
Human Male Vanguard = Marshall Law

Most of them are just some random first name.

Occasionally I will name them after a tactic. For some reason I feel obliged to bastardize it so it takes a moment to recognize. My melee-focused Krogan Vanguard is called "Feestakoffs." My Flamer-focused Vorcha: Bhern.

Most of mine are names from the Wheel of Time books.

And if not, I try to pick appropriate lore-themed names.

I give my characters lore names that would sound right in the story mode, all my quarians end in Vas Tonbay which is a Quarian ship name, all N7s are from specific nations on earth such as my slayer is an Arabian, Paladin is Brazilian, Fury is Kenyan , Destroyer is Russian, Infiltrator is Korean, Engineer is French, all names from their local. and just last names for standard humans.

I like to name my characters after certain things that I think about a lot. For example: I named my N7 Shadow after a character from an anime series because of her sword and acrobatics.

My asari Valkyrie is called Ardat Yakshi.

One of my vorcha is named Keyaaaah (after the sound he makes during bloodlust). One krogan is called Mrrrrwraaar. Most of the geth are binary combos (1001 etc). Novaguard is called Boom.

Kept them mostly short and simple and tried to name each class with a Letter - for example - Mo, Mee, Min, Mol, Neep, Neerp, Naarf, Jim, Jo, John, Ken, Kin, Kol. and one named after my daughter :)

All 24 of the original characters are named after letters in the Greek alphabet.
The Armiger turians all have Roman-esque names.
The krogan have clan names, and the newer ones have puns along the lines of Charj for Kroguard and Tanck for Krodept.
My geth are named Matrix, Skynet, and HK-47.
My male quarians all have quarian-related names (such as Adas and Reegar).
The remaining ones are named for characters in ME SP (such as my Fury being named Kasumi), other BioWare games (like my Phoenix Adept being named Canderous), or just have nicknames (like my vorcha soldier being named Pyro).

Before the patch where promoting was changed to keep appearance options, I would just number all of them rather than remembering names. But now I use my imagination.

For humans, I first think of a random country, then of a name that could come from that country. Got to keep them international.
For most aliens species, I take names from the games and change a few letters. I come up with something of my own that sounds lore-friendly. (By the way, naming Quarians is a pain. Not enough letters...)
For Geth, I use some acronyms that sound like names. The engineer is Destruction Unit G-23, DU G-23.
For Krogans, I follow Bakara's advice and belch until I get something that sounds like a name. Along with a clan name, of course.
Only two names are puns: One of my Volus is called Ston Liwuu, my Krogan soldier is called Urdnot Crunch. He dreams of becoming a breakfast cereal mascot.

I mostly name them after TMNT characters.
Ex. The TGI is Traximus and krogan soldier is Zog.
Vorcha soldier is Shredder because of the heavy melee.

All my Adepts are named after Greek Gods, demi gods, or Titans.

My Engineers are named after University's that graduate engineers. I have one named Mit, a girl named Git, I think the Volus is Stan (stanford), the Geth is VTech, etc...

My Infiltrators bear the names of real life assassins.

My Soldiers are named after characteristics of successful warriors. Will, Faith, Strength, Fury, Honor, Tactics, etc...

My Sentinels after famous mountains.

My Vanguards are all SuperHero names. Colossus, Iron Man (cerberus guy), Deadpool (slayer), Rogue (human femaile) Hulk (Batarian browler) all these guys have colors to match.

I used to try harder to name them, and only do a lot with a couple of the types I played early on. All of my Asari are named similar to CharmaGeddon, which was my Asari Adept. My next was KharmaGeddon. So on. My soldiers tend to be a variant of Destructo, my Batarians a variant of BatMan. Geth, so they don't look too much like the enemy, I dress like a clown and name them on the lines of Klown.

I name them after the devs & voice actors of Bioware. Here are some examples

Volus Engineer - Eric Fagnan
Turian Ghost - B. Keener
N7 Shadow - Jessica Merizan
N7 Slayer - Ninja Stan
N7 Fury - Kym Lane
Asari Justicar - Rana McAnear
Geth Infiltrator - Unit DCD (DCD stands for DC Douglas)
Quarian Female Infiltrator - Claudia Black (I wish the name to be Claudia Black vas Morrigan but there is not enough space for that)
N7 Paladin - Christ Priestly...
N7 Destroyer - Robin Sachs
Krogan Vanguard - N Plewes
