I don't see the problem with Tali's face.

It is far too human looking.

Tali's face was already very human looking in all three games.

I'm okay with the edited stock photo except for one thing:

I can't really see Tali with Long hair. Be totally impractical for someone wearing a skintight envirosuit for her entire life.

As for it being a stock photo, oh well. Shepard himself is based on Mark Vanderloo, so not too much of a jump, there.

At least Shepard gets an in-game model and isn't an edited photo all of the time.

The whole stock photo of Tali is just lazy

I'd prefer an in-game face and less human really

She's a British model of Afgani ethnicity. Exotic to some, I think.

Her face wasn't shown until the third game.

The only features you could make out beneath the mask was that she had vaguely human bone structure (but then, so do the Asari and the Drell) and that she had pale white eyes.

If you pay attention she looks differently in ME1 and ME2 (I'll spare judgement about ME3).
Give her one of the more transparent visors (I don't remember, probably the Hydra armor) in ME1 and you'll see that she doesn't look all that similar to a human.

I missed your lovely conversation. I'm just saying this looks nothing the Tali you could see through the mask. I mean that stock photo looks nothing like the Tali we see through the mask.

The long hair is also really stupid- imagine how horrible it would get in a day from being stuck under a helmet. It's incredibly impractical. Hell, even just using a motorcycle helmet for a few hours makes your hair yucky, much less 95% of the time.

Yeah - I figure you'd need to either be shaved bald or have short-cropped and/or tied-back hair at all times.

That is assuming that they have hair to begin with

Yeah, given the fact that no other species has hair, this is just weird.

Yeah. I have long hair and just having a beanie on during winter is really annoying at times.

Trying to imagine her having all that hair stuffed inside that suit... ugh. It seems really unlikely it would be part of the "hood" of her environmental suit since it drapes over the helmet, so her hair is probably plastered all over the nape of her neck + upper back, which would itch like all hell even if she took her suit completely off regularly. Just thinking about wearing that suit for days at a time... just no. No me gusta.

Just... why?!

Personally?

I'd have preferred:
A: A really really good unique smart and satisfying idea of Quarian looks.
B: One of the great fan art pictures selected by fan vote.

Yeah I know some people would have absolutely hated the second idea but... publicity / fan stroking and the fact that it would be hard to argue against "Well you guys voted it into the game" seemed like a nobrainer for me. :)

I always hoped under the mask Tali looked like this:

Mostly to ****** off the Talimancers, but bringing to the surface the question of looks versus characterization in fan appeal, especially in the context of female characters, and undermining gender double standards in entertainment, would be nice too.

EDIT: Besides, with a piehole like that there'd be no way she couldn't suck the eezo out of an active drive core. If you know what I'm sayin'.

BioWare said they wanted to use a real model for Tali's face. Liara, Samara, Miranda, etc. all had real face models, and they believed Tali deserved the same treatment. They also claim to have sifted through thousands of photos before choosing that one. They wanted to use a photo to give it a photorealistic look. The said they thought it would be a nice touch, because it's a special gift to Shepard. Something like that I think.

What would have been more special is Tali having a real face to show instead of a hard-to-make-out picture. I agree that they should have used a real face model, but editing an existing photo instead of creating a 3D face using the model as a reference does seem like a cop out. I usually try to cut BioWare some slack, but in this case I agree with the players. Tali is special to a good number of them. They deserved better.

They could have made Quarians more like the Rattataki of SW. Makes more sense than having a pound of hair on their heads

DIdn't it say somewhere in the codex (before ME2) that quarians have hair? Although if they're stuck in the suits all the time then treating it to not grow would be very, very sensible. Mind you, male quarians have longer helmets, perhaps they need the extra space to stuff the beard into.

I did one Tali romance playthrough. The use of a stock photo didn't really seem to impact anything. Sure, I wish it was a more custom image, and that the Quarian race has been designed more, but to me it's more about the story and role-playing the moment.

Stock photo model of Miss England is pretty cute though.

Exactly.. Default Shepard is based on a RL male model, Miranda was modelled after Yvonne Strahovski. Did anyone complain? I can't remember a single negative post about it.
Now they use a stock photo to model Tali and suddenly everyone is enranged. Hmmm.. I wonder why they didn't see that comming, it was soooo obvious.
