Cause he took a missile to the face barely survived and cracked jokes about it as soon as he could get out of bed.
And was back on his feet a few hours after it happened.
Garrus is awesome. Garrus has always been my favorite character in the ME series. So when he was made romancable in ME2 I went for it and now I end up playing that particular character more than the other two I have. His romance is sweet and adorkable, gotta love that. And he's a guy that has totally always been there with Shep, always had her back.

He's one of the best 'bros' in gaming. His best scene in the entire series is just going on top of a building or whatever it was, shooting bottles and talking a little trash with Shep. AND IT WAS AWESOME. I will admit he was kinda boring in ME1, but in 2 & 3 he became the snarky, silver tongued buddy cop-type to Shep that made him stand out above the other NPCs for me.
This really sums it up very well. Garrus simply is that awesome.
And frankly I find his skill sets very useful in combat. My preferred class is soldier and Garrus's tech and sniper skills compliment my play style very well.

a) He balances my team. Tali is short range with the shotgun, I'm mid range with the assault rifle, and he is long range with the sniper.
c) He's funny (Starting with 2. In 1, he was just..a cop)
d) I could set him up with an effective RailGun in 1. That made me love him a LOT.

Like some people's opinion of Liara (I'm personally a Liara-phile), I found the friendship between my Shep and Garrus quite out of place. The line "there is no Shepard without Vakarian", I was like, really? I never took him anywhere anyway. Was also personally perturbed that Liara was dumped back to the Normandy the moment Garrus turned up on the scene. For me, there is no Shepard without T'Soni.
You not alone it that catagorie

+1. He ended up being like Dr Watson to Shepard's Sherlock Holmes.
I wouldn't say he was 'boring' in ME1, but he definitely came out of his shell in the later games.
Plus, Garrus' Loyalty mission was all kinds of awesomeness. It felt like a level from the Jedi Knight games.

Part of his appeal with me comes from the fact that out of all the squadmates in ME1 he had the best character design ( he looked cool ), he had a very versatile set skill set that ( I needed someone that could hack stuff ) made sure he almost always took up one of spots on the roster and I found him to his views on crime, justice and life in general to be interesting. I was also intrigued by the whole entire human - turian relations thing after the first contact war.
By the time we got to ME2 Garrus kind of stopped being all that special ( his busted armour looked stupid and he barely talked to me ) but I was still pleased to have him along for the ride, maybe it was because he was the first ME1 squadmate to come back to the Normandy. Archangel's introduction in ME2 was definitely memorable.
In ME3 he once again looks cool and he has some of the better one liners but he is not relevent to the plot.
I guess Garrus is just the most consistently likeable character in the series so far. Almost everyone else in the series generates polarising opinions but that there is something about Garrus that makes almost everyone see him as Shepard's friends or bro. Gamer's want to see Garrus follow in Shepard's shoes.

The conversation between Garrus and Shep in the last part of ME3 is probably one of my favorite moments in gaming. That whole dialogue exchange put into perspective how close Garrus and Shep had become. They were brothers in arms but they were as close as true brothers.

Salarians, too shifty. Batarians, too viscious. Asari, too feminine. Krogan, too brutish. Hanar, too jellyfish. You get the picture.
But other than being in a rigid hierarchal society their personalities are most like us. Along with the quarians who also have a similar personality to humans.
