Eagle + Lion + Booze = Griffons?

I'm sure all 3 are still readily available in the world of Dragon Age.

Eagles might become more scarce if Shale is on the loose...

And now I'm wondering just how Shale would react to Griffons. Would they break her mind? Send her into a berserk rage? Cause her to run screaming?

pc " Hey shale looks its a griffon."
shale" It will die!!"
pc " wait no shale....."
<shale snaps griffons neck>
shale" why does it look angry?"

How the heck does anyone really know if they're extinct? What they have a census go around making counts? Surely there are wild Griffons some where out there.

Clearly Grey Wardens have griffonsense as well as darkspawn sense. ;)

If a wild griffon doesn't eat your lifestock or that of your neighbours in living memory, then its extinct.

I think they didn't add griffons because the game timeline is months passing while you raise the armies to fight darkspawn. You get an idea of how long when you do the dwarven mage quest. Now if griffons still existed and Grey wardens rode on them, they wouldn't have been stopped by the border, and the grey wardens would have been there to kick Arch-Demon booty. And game ends with you being just the new grey warden, not the hero of Ferelden....yawn.

I think mentioning the Griffons paints a picture in our heads of stuff of legends. That the Grey Wardens are to Ferelden what King Arthur was to us. It certainly helps to see them in awe for all the gritty dark parts you learn about them as you progress in the game, like Ducan killing an initiate for not wanting to join. I don't see having Griffons as being alot of fun in the game

Well, I am taking out of my ass here so feel free to ignore this, but my honest opinion of DA is that the player is supposed to get the idea of 'glory past' or a 'fading age'.  Lets face it,: Ferelden is crap. The once revered Wardens are barely recognized at first, and soon turn into traitors worse than criminals in the eyes of the common man.

The story of griffons is supposed to make you feel the magic and wonder of latter days, where Wardens were magical and revered beings....the stuff of legends, the subject of wild stories, the substance of living myth......

All of which is lost to the mist of time. The modern Warden is a dark, bitter persona who must endure disbelief and apathy most everywhere they venture. Haunted by a terrible fate, sacrificing all they know, the glowing myths of the Wardens of a bygone age riding griffons to battle are a poignant and somewhat mocking reminder of all that is lost.

Gryphons would simply have no use in DA:O or the expansion DA:O-A. This doesn't mean there won't ever be another DA game where they could have a use, but it's not going to be Dragon Age: Origins.

So I think you might want to wait and see what other games in the Dragon Age series are going to be released: maybe an RTS, or some explorable world game is planned for the future. But anything mounted simply doesn't fit with the DA:O method of travel.

Maybe they could be used as an area transition. Beyond that, no.

I agree that in actual gameplay value having Griffons might not be that much fun, aside from having some really cool cinematics (flying in on a giant white griffon) to various places. But even having a quest to find white griffon eggs that will could eventually be used to breed the species or finding livestock to remake the griffons would be worthwhile (something like bringing back the honour and glory of the Grey Wardens). Besides we have no idea how Griffons were originally created (natural, magically created, etc.) so its possible that they can be obtained, just not the original "White Griffon" just like how Dragonlings are frequent while High Dragons are rare. But the odds that they exist out there are actually pretty good when you think about it. If they're natural, it could be assumed that they're extinct when they're flourishing in other areas is pretty good since world knowledge is pretty slight in Fereldan. After all they're flying birds, I find it hard to believe that the Grey Warden monitored each and every one. There are good odds that at some point some white griffons migrated somewhere else and no Grey Warden has ever found them as they are few in number (like High Dragons). Or it might be possible that the Grey Wardens only found a pair of White Griffons (male and female) and they became extinct because there was too much inbreeding. That would be a fun codex right there, the animal husbandry of White Griffons :).

Ok think of how big all of thedas is now imagine someone not actually seeing one of them for several hundred years. Who knows how many people have found dragons since there are several in fereldan they must be in small numbers but they clearly exist. Griffons however have not been seen since whatever age it was and are likely since then whipped out completely due to not maintaining a health population. On the idea of them being south that could be but its likely there staying there and aren't heading north anytime soon.

Dragons were thought extinct for longer than the griffons have been.  The griffons died out after the last Blight, with the codex stating the last one died out about two hundred years ago I believe.  Both the codex and what people say ingame is to be taken as a matter of perspective, as most of the codex is supposed to be written by characters in Thedas, and so cannot be taken as guaranteed fact.

The Gray Wardens knew that they had not killed all the Darkspawn because of their abilities, but these do not extend to being able to detect Griffons, especially wild ones which probably are not tainted themselves.

I vote no to griffins. I'm already annoyed that half of the spells and abilities have the same names as another popular game. If they bring in griffins, the next thing you know they'll bring in playable worgens, er... I mean werewolves to fight the Scourge, er... I mean, the Blight.

When playing Dragon Age one thing that was mentioned in various conversations is that Grey Wardens use to ride on White Griffons but they became extinct. But with future expansions and so forth wouldn't it be awesome if we got a chance to ride griffins or even to find them in some remote location in a quest and gradually bring them back to future Grey Wardens?  I looked online but I didn't see much about them aside from that brief snippet.  As I didn't see it posted anywhere when I searched I thought I'd throw that idea out and see what everyone else thought about it.

Yes yes, we know...

I actually can't imagine how it would fit the current tone of the game. It must look wacky also, unless thought of as legends.

I was convinced RIGHT UNTIL THE END of the game I would see Grey Warden's on griffons. I thought when I was battling the archdemon there'd be this cool cinematic where a massive horde of flying griffons with Grey Wardens on their backs would appear and help me.

They didn't and I was disappointed. Shame on you Bioware for getting my hopes up (really, why mention griffon mounts and then say they're extinct? That's just cruel!)

Anyway, in answer to the original question - Yes!

yeah, the Griffons could be flying around in the Kocari Wilds or even farther south for all we know. Kocari Wilds is still unexplored territory for the most part.

It's unlikely they're to the south as that's mostly an icy wasteland.

But it was stated somewhere they were extinct.

It was stated somewhere that elves were once immortal. It was stated somewhere that Andreste was a mage. It was stated somewhere that the magisters entered the Golden City to usurp the Maker.

There's a great deal stated that is dubious; that's the nature of lore in this game.
