It's refreshing to find a gaming thread where 35 makes me one of the young punks, and not one of the old farts.

I regularly play with a 50 year old dude.

Dude sounds like a total loser, don't you tire of carrying the old fart?  Oh wait, it's me your talking about.  Crap, this is what happens when I forget to take my alzheimer's medication.

Some time ago I used to play often with a guy whose username I won't mention here; anyways, he is 66 and he's a hell of a good player.
Usually we played together with two pugs, and most of the time we were the only using mics, so when any of the pugs was being carried through the gold match, he would be all like "Darn you schoolboy! Go back to singleplayer you lame ass idiot! C'mon, man, let's kick this kid out once we're back in the lobby!"
The poor guy would often leave the game in the process =)

I'm wondering - how many of those guys were actually schoolboys? =)

43 here, and a lady.
I got hooked on games as a nipper, my parents had a pub and we had those table top arcade games, Pacman, Donkey Kong, Moon Cresta, stuff like that. I remember getting high score on Moon Cresta one afternoon, and my mother pulling the plug out because she had told me not to spend all my pocket money on those things. Well now, mother, I'm in charge of the plug, so nerrrr.

Oh and here I though I am old. I am mainly quitting gaming because I´m already 20 (soon 21) years old and I need to start focusing on other more important things in life. Guess I was wrong, though I´m still continuing my path.

Why?

I see that thrown around a lot - either older players saying they were worried their gaming time was running out or younger players chastising older players for still gaming. But why is that?

Gaming is a hobby and/or form of entertainment. Is there a set age where we are expected to stop watching movies or television? Is there a set age where we are expected to stop reading? Is there a set age where we are expected to stop doing anything that we enjoy?

So, why do people try to assign age barriers to gaming? Is it because of the old stereotype that gaming is for kids, and as we grow older one should put away kids' toys? Well, I've got news: gamers have been tearing down barriers for a while now. There was also a time, once, when female gamers weren't common (and we're still the minority, but numbers continue to grow). There was a time, once, when the only people considered gamers were the stereotypical geek/nerd... but you see more and more mainstream gaming from, guess what, people of all walks of life.

Don't limit yourself by your age. Who cares if you're 4, 14, 40, or 94? If you love doing something and are able to do it, DO IT. Don't EVER let a stereotype or peer pressure or doubt sway you away from a harmless recreational activity.

My Dad is 56 and STILL games when he comes home from work. So does my 41-year-old husband. And I sure don't plan on hanging up the hat anytime soon. I will be old and grey and in a nursing home, clutching my controller with my arthritic hands and chastising those darn young whippersnappers on my mic, talking about how gaming was back in my day, where you had to wait on load screens up and down a snowy hill both ways... or something like that. Game on, brother. Game. On.

Always amuses me when kids ask how I can still game, i am only 30 but I am told by teens online all the time how I am sad for still gaming at my age.

First I was unaware that gaming came with an experation date, and secondly, what do you expect to do in your free time when you and your friends all have jobs/kids.

I always feel bad for the teens I see online all the time, they are at an age where they need to be out enjoying life, not locked up sitting online all the time.

More important than gaming? Oh my....

Hey, for 38 some odd years Ive always had some kind of video game. From Pong on up. Whether you're playing an hour or so a day or more, you never have to hang up your spurs. Now I have my own kids. I got Wii and Wii-U for family stuff, and my 360 for me.

Well it is not that gaming over 30 years is all that rare but I have pressures from my family. I know it sounds all that silly and too young but I need to already start thinkin about fixing my life. Work and family because I have 65 year old mom and 75 years old dad and when your parents at that age, wish to see grandkids, you just don´t say as of all I know. I might not get another chance to give them that joy 10 years from now.

Went a little bit off topic, so if anyone else reads this you might as well ignore it.

Rather game with the folks in their 30s and above, at least they actually aim to have fun with the games they play. Most people of my age group seem to just want to troll someone thinking it makes them cool or some other form of obnoxious behavior. I'm 25 years old so that must say something! Maybe? I don't know >.<

My best xbox live friends are at least in their 30's and I have more fun gaming with them than anyone else (Few exceptions though of course)

Thank you to the older crowd for keeping games fun.

It's a great time to be a gamer, regardless of your age. I took some time off from the mid 90's till about 3 yrs ago. I never got a console and went straight to PC. I never thought I'd like multiplayer but ME3 changed all that for me. With all that is happening in the gaming world these days I am really happy to be a part of it again. I even built a steambox just for the linux beta test i was part of. And now I'm starting to get into game development and the tools available today are amazing and simple to use from graphics to sound to game design. So game on everybody!

well said DragonRacer. it's like many aspects of humanity where there are silly ideas about what is what and what is considered acceptable. I agree, just do what works for you and enjoy yourself. Age should not be a limiting factor. How about that old guy/gal who decides to get a University degree while in their 70's? Kudos to them. Anything is possible. Let's just have fun while doing it.

Glad to see gamers even older than me. at 44 I still feel young. I could easilty see myself playing in later years and owning the little punks. You know that is fun, punk owning that is.
