and for the life of me, I cannot stand the character customization in this game or the series for that matter. No matter what I am unable to get the right face I want. I look at some peoples Shepard faces online and some of them look great and I have no idea how they do it. Everything looks ugly, the eyes, nose, mouth, hair styles, facial structures, etc, are all atroucious.

I must have spent at least a solid hour on my PS3 trying to work something out and I end up with a horrible looking Shepard.

How do you guys do it?

Better question would be: How would you want your Shepard to look?

I don't. I just use the default face.

Yeah, I remember the very first time I played ME1, I went straight to the character creator in an attempt to make the best Male Shepard ever, needless to say things did not go as I planned so decided to settle for the default Male Shepard ( Sheploo ). Good thing the default character model grew on me and that Sheploo has gotten better looking as the series progressed.

How your character looks in the creation tools and how s/he looks during gameplay can be wildly different. This seems especially true in Mass Effect.

I've never gotten the hang of the Mass Effect creator. In fact, the only game I can reliably get good results in is Skyrim. For Mass Effect 1, I just browse different Mass Effect 2 face codes for something I like and then reverse engineer the slider positions from the code and try them out. Some faces translate really well and others don't, it's part of the fun finding one I really like.

Well I have the PS3 version of ME1 and I don't think I am able to utilize the codes for faces on it.

I to have the PS3 version with no problem getting my femshep looking like I want her to. It just took a long time in the character creator to get the look I wanted.

The lighting in the character creators differs to that used in the game itself, so Shepards will always look a little different.

For getting faces back to Mass Effect 1 from face codes you could try something like this, http://social.biowar...m/project/4781/, which will convert a face-code to the sliders.

However since the assets are different you'll still have to do some tinkering.

You can. All you need is a Mass Effect 2 face code that you like and a progream that will convert that code into a list of numbers for the sliders in the first game so you can recreate it.

A quick Google search will give you this for the converter: http://social.biowar...m/project/4781/

Paste the face code into the program and it will give you a notepad document with the numbers for the sliders in the character creation in Mass Effect 1.

The document will look like this:

[Head]
Neck Thickness: 25
Face Size: 9
Cheek Width: 16
Cheek Bones: 22
Cheek Gaunt: 1
Ears Size: 8
Ears Orientation: 8

In this case, 1 is the far left position on the slider so for Cheek Gaunt it needs to be pushed as far to left as possible and for Ears Size it needs to be pushed to the far left and then clicked right 7 times to reach position 8.

Follow that all the way through and you're set. Make any adjustments you feel are necessary.

The gaunt slider and cheek-bone settings always confuse me.

The face will look fine the char creator, but then in game I'll just cringe at how the mouth and cheeks on the face look at an angle. It doesn't help that first shot of Shep's face in ME1 has that weird lighting that throws off how he looks.

its easier to make a decent if not attractive looking female shepard than it is to make a decent looking male shepard.

It helps a great deal to browse the premade faces first. Not because either one doesn't look weird, but you can set the attributes beyond the minimum/maximum value this way.

I always think my ME1 Shepard looked the best.

Good Shepards take time to create. I spent hours on my main Shepards. It goes like this:

(1) Start a new game. Go into the character creator, browse through the pre-made faces until one looks as if you could make something of it.
(2) Carefully move sliders by *small* increments, turn head left and right, up and down, make screenshots. Repeat until the character looks acceptable or you're thoroughly sick of it. Make screenshots of the slider positions or copy the face code into a text file if you're using the ME2 CC.
(3) Try this character in-game. Expose the face to different lighting conditions. Make screenshots. Note where the face looks not like you want it to.
(4) If your character looks good, play. Otherwise, start a new game. Recreate your character using the screenshots of slider positions or by pasting the face code. Go to (2), or (1) if you want to try something radically different.

(Optional: throw your computer out of the window in frustration because all maleShep noses look like radioactive vegetables from space).

If you have ME2, I recommend creating the character in ME2 first. The differences between the character screen appearance and the in-game appearance are less in ME2 than in ME1. Also, you get the face code. The face code digits correspond to ME1 slider positions, start counting at 1, up to 9 then follow with A, B, C....etc..Recreating an ME2 character in ME1 is easy. The other way, extremely difficult if you didn't make screenshots of the sliders. Only the facial hair, makeup and scar sliders have a different sequence, and the scar slider is unique to ME1.

I use the Sheploo model, because that's how I envision Shepard to look.

Anything else isn't Shepard.

Now you know why everybody uses the default Sheploo.. cause the clayface generator was no good.
Hope they do an overhaul in ME4.

Custom male Shepard = too bad
Custom Female Shepard = Better than original Shepard

At least is what i have obtained using the editor of the game :P

Takes a lot of practice, but after spending so much time in character creators I tend to make some really good characters. My avatar is a ME1 Shep (mediocre quality pic), and when I compare him to my utterly atrocious first ME1 Shep I can see my progress (like OMG I reloaded a save of my 2007 Shep and felt so ashamed I thought that was good).
