So, you're NOT a Mage, nor a smith.  You want to buy some armor or a weapon that has some improvements in combat.  When he shows you a weapon and says "It does +5 damage!"  How do _you_ KNOW he's telling the truth?  Take a whack at something to see how well it slices and dices?  (Turns out the targets were faked out to disintegrate at a feather's touch.)  It looks like it has magical buffs on it.  (It's called a "glamour".)  It isn't until you get into real combat that you start to suspect that what you paid Big Bucks for is very pretty, but very mundane equipment.  You go back to where the shop had been only to discover that Fly By Night, Ent. has moved on, leaving behind quite a few angry customers.

Hmm.  Sounds like there's an entertaining mini-quest in there.

Anyway, Snake Oil Salesmen have been around forever.  Might be fun to encounter some.

Buying equipment from vendors is nigh-worthless in the game as-is, given the cost of anything better than what you find anyway while questing. Snake-oil salesmen would move equipment-vendors from nigh-worthless to entirely worthless.

Plus, it's not fun.

And to effectively act as Snake Oil Salesmen, they wouldn't do any buying. From their POV, the idea would be to suck the money out of a community; not put money into it. So from your perspective, since you apparently have no interest in buying any Gifts or Tomes or Accessories or, apparently no interest in selling off your surplus Inventory from the "legitimate" vendors, I guess the SOS would just make ALL vendors less than worthless.

Seems like to qualify as "worthy", a vendor must offer Rolls Royce quality for KIA prices.

Actually, I could see this working, if it were designed well. You buy a kickass looking sword from a guy at a very good price, then shortly thereafter, it breaks in a cinema. Quest is to track down the guy that sold you the cheap copy and extract the real version of the weapon from his corpse. ;p
