So this time I've taken pretty much everything I can find, including stuff that's pretty distasteful to take like Eamon's shield and the rest of the stuff in the Redcliffe vault. While I have a litle more free cash, I still don't have anything close to enough money to buy the more expensive items that cost 80-110 soverigns. How  is this doable? Do you have to depend on your mages for most of your healing instead of buying reagents?

Do lots and lots of sidequests and yeah it helps if you use as few consumables as possible. If you haven't done the quest from the thug in Orzammar's Dust Town (the one where you deliver lyrium to the mage tower) it's a great way to make a lot of gold depending on how high your persuasion is.

Money starts coming in more easily in the late teen levels when you can vendor higher tier armor you don't need for a lot of gold.

Create potent lyrium potions (travel to the cheapest vendors for the items necessary). U'll make a net win of about 25-30 silver PER potion.

Ah, so the problem is that my character is a little too nice in her notions of acceptable sidequests. I don't do the ones that seem a little hinky, and those are probably the money makers. And I'm probably consuming most of my profits. To get around that, I seem to have to take both Wynne and Morrigan with me, and since Alistair is always in the party as I see this as being a quest of two Grey Wardens, not one, I often leave Wynne behind to bring whomever seems most useful on a particular quest. Hmmm.... Maybe I'll have to spec Morrigan as less of a killing machine on my next playthrough--or make Wynne more of one.

Oh, that's a good suggestion! Thanks!

there is a certain early side quest that seems glitch'd in that it is repeatable. For 9 silver in materials you make 50 silver. I played through my first game not knowing about it and always struggled making enough gold to buy any expansive items. I basically beat the game only with found and quested items never buying any skill books and only a couple master runes. I played through a second time and used the glitch to give my Noble Human a nest egg of 200 gold early in the game let me buy skill books then then I realized they restocked at the camp if you buy the 1st night in camp. Made my second play through much easier and I didn't feel bad because I would have raided the family vault and not left any gold for Howe so I would have expected a couple hundred gold in there.

So if you buy the camp skill book on the first night and only the first night, it will be replaced? Otherwise not?

Which early side quest is that? :s Cannot remember a really early repeatable side quest for such money...

Only good one I remember is request money from a Lord in the Assembly as a Dwarven Noble, giving 25 sovereign ('gold') if sold to an merchant

I find it easy to collect money.. Buy all the backpack, its all worth the money while venturing deep into the Deep Roads and elsewhere, collect everything, armor, weapons and all the stuff...so you wont destroy anything from lack of place..and sell everything back.

Doing most of the sidequests is great to fill up the pouch also

Most armor I use is found so it helps also

Voilà!

yeah on my first play through I didn't buy the books, then on the second play through I bought the books the 1st night at camp then they pop back up in the Bodahn inventory again so I bought them again.

Same thing with the backpack from the merchant at Ostagar, if as soon as you arrive there you buy the backpack, you can buy another when you get back from the wilds and do the ritual.

seems a couple merchants restock after major milestones in plot.

not sure if it's against the rule to mention the name of the quest but I don't want to fall into a trap:whistle:

I believe he's talking about the traps quest in Lothering.

Anyway, some general non exploit, non crafting tips for making lots of money:

Sell EVERYTHING that you are not using.

Don't buy potions.

Don't buy crafting materials or recipes - most things you can make are worthless anyway. I typically buy the Health Poultice and Lyrium Potion recipes, and that's it.

Loot EVERYTHING and sell it.

When you run out of inventory space, leave whatever dungeon you're in (if you can, don't think this possible in the mage tower), and go sell.

Don't buy items for party members. Give them the stuff you get for free from questing or as loot.

Either always have a rogue with you, or install the mod that lets you bash open chests.

The majority of loot items in the game are generic and worthless, but if you loot it all and sell it it really adds up. This is especially true as you get closer to the end of the game, as loot scales with your level. When you start finding Tier 7 dragonbone weapons and armor, making money by selling loot gets pretty easy.

My last two games, I was able to buy all of the expensive items I wanted.

Another thing to remember is if you are full don't worry either stay on your quest and finish it or go to town and sell your junk but you can always go back and loot the bodies that you left behind earlier. Remember chests you can't get open and when you raise your lock picking skill go back and open that chest. Un-looted dead bodies should be where you left them and chests too.

I don't always bring a Rogue with me my first time through an area but after I do the quest and kill everything I return with a Rogue and pick it clean.

If you actually look at the numbers, sometimes it's better to not buy the backpacks. Depending on how much crap you decide you need with you.

If you buy the first two that cost less than one sovereign, then maintain open bags when entering dungeons you can save the extra 13-14 gold that you would otherwise spend on bag space. Even if you run out of bag space and have to drop an item or two, there are almost always a couple of cheap items you can drop and replace without validating buying the extra 10 slots.

As far as abusing quests/vendors, you might as well just save yourself the time and use the console. Abusing bugs = Cheating. Don't try to convince yourself otherwise.

ostagar backpack was 58 silver and you can get it twice with is pretty good considering

if I remember correctly the 1st night in camp after leaving Lothering whatever you buy restocks next time you go to camp. Meaning everything he has Tomes, Runes, Gifts and backpack being the big items to consider getting if you manage to make a lot of gold in Lothering, which is only possible selling traps.

So you can get you first 2 back packs for 58 silver each then I think Bodahn sells the backpack of 6 gold and you can get it from him twice.

I just go ahead and buy them. My last game, I bought all of the expensive items I wanted and still had over 200 gold left by the end of the game. That extra 13-14 for the backpacks was nothing. But if you are selling EVERYTHING, then you should have plenty of room in your inventory anyway. Only the longest dungeons might require a return trip to get everything.

Did you know that you can earn like more than 500 sovereigns in one playthrough? And selling items doesn't play a big part in that.... except the heavy armors which cost for about 1 gold each piece when you sell them. The biggest moneymaker is the part when you do Rogek's quest in Orzammar Dust Town. You just need to have 40 gold when you talk to him. The quest gives you about 50 or 60 gold after (maybe even more I just can't remember). The persuasion skill also contributes a lot to your money. There are many situations where you could talk big money out of people. There is also another big gold reward during the part where you fight Arl Howe and you find someone who says he has a chest full of sovereigns in it (yeah the chest truly has big money in it). And of course the sidequests.... they can give you more than 100gold if you manage to do most of them.

EDIT:
Oh and I forgot, you should try to bring Leliana with you or maybe a rogue who has lockpicking skills because there are chests that contain lots of gold or items that sell for a lot

1. Do all side quest.
2.Buy recipes and make your own poultices.
3.Sell everything you don't use.
4.Ask for a reward all the time. Having 4th tier coercion helps.
5.Use Liliana to pick all chests to gain more items. Even if it means going back to areas that have the enemy already cleaned out at higher levels.

I recommend increasing coercion as quickly as you can leave things like stealing, poison and so forth to your companions.

I also highly recommend spending 1 point on stealing, then doing Slim's quests in Denerim. they all pay big.

Lots of great advice here! Thanks, folks, much appreciated! I won't be able to use all of it with this character, but I'll keep those things in mind for a character that's a little less on the up and up. ;)

Oh yeah I had thought you needed to be a rogue to do that but you're right you only need steal 1 to do them.

don't forget to steal. And ask the dog to find things for you.

Pickpocketing. It's actually kind of fun.

Remember your Rogue can pickpocket just about everyone. When you enter an area, have them go around to all the NPC's and pick there pickets. Great way to get gps, and also make up lots of potions or all kinds, then sell them off.

or if you really wants lots and lots of gold, use the cheat code.

It's more rewarding for rogues. Beacuse you need at least 1 point in stealth & steal to get the full set of quests. One or the other, you only get half of it.
