So I just watched Star Wars for the first time (Episodes I and II only so far). I can definitely see the inspiration that BioWare got from the Star Wars universe. There are many similarities just with different names in each universe. But here is the thing: I'm actually not liking Star Wars as much as Mass Effect. Hardcore SciFi/Space opera fans, is it blasphemous of me to like ME better? Because I learned more about the ME universe in ME1 than I learned about the SW universe in the first two episodes. For example, in SW I see aliens walking around with no info regarding their biology/culture like we get in ME. But maybe this isn't a fair comparison after all, because the SW films don't come with a codex that ME comes with. Because of both being completely different mediums.

I respect SW for the inspiration it gave to ME, but I think ME takes it to a new, higher level. Would I be a lone weirdo in holding this opinion?

Yep, ME certainly took it's share of inspiration from the classics. They never made a secret about that either. Also, I like the ME universe better as well.

But now, go and watch Babylon 5, then we can talk about similarities again. ;)

Yes! That's the wonderful thing about ME is that it takes from many different classic sci fi movies and tv shows and translate it into a game. Other then Star Wars some great stuff to watch that may remind you of the game (or I'm just crazy..) :

Star Trek
Battlestar Galactica (try both old and newer versions)
Farscape
V
Stargate (Mass Relays??? Huh huh yes?!)
And Firefly, but with this one I may be reaching I just really like this show.. ^_^

I like ME a hell of a lot more than Star Wars. One of the problems for me is that, in Star Wars, there are dozens of random races that have no backgrounds, histories, or anything and are just like random filler creatures.

Watch it from 4.

Am I the only one who enjoyed the new series? It wasn't terrible and I thought the third one was excellent.

No, I also like them, and I grew up watching the OT as a 6 year old. I always wondered how Anakin became Darth Vader and voila, I got my answers.

I must say if you have never seen them, you should start watching the OT, then the PT.

Well hey, as interesting and helpful you all have been, I will probably not read too much more of this thread to avoid spoilers. Will be back after watching the whole thing :P

This is the feeling get aswell. And when there was soem back story to the species of Star wars it usualy seemed very short and shallow and onedimentional. Then again their story wasn't important, even if I think it adds to the overall story to actualy get to know the people involved and their history and what made them.. Or maybe they all added to the huge pot and most culture was watered down to whatever they personaly prefer.

I wouldn't say you are overreaching. Especially ME2 and everything in the terminus systems always reminds me of firefly as well. And yes, it was a great show, wasn't it? Also, they have medifoam, which I think might just be the precursor to medigel :) (the picture is from Serenity).

One could also include Alien by the way (Rachni). I am sure there are many others.

Only reason I will say I like Star Wars more is because of the extended universe, and to an extent, KotOR games. While the movies themselves are very enjoyable, its dabbling in the extended universe that has made me like the movies even more than they probably deserve, because of how I feel of the universe as a whole nd the fact the movies are in that universe.

So if we're talking about which Universe's I like more, I really can't say, they're prob equal. But do I prefer ME to the Star Wars movies? Yes

Sorry, but it´s more likely that was Starship Troopers. And for the people who missed it, the movie is a parody of the book´s ideology.

The rachni are buggers from Ender's game. The way they are introduced is like aliens. The latter mission you do where face a nest of them is like starship troopers.

To OP (who started from EP1) and everyone else who loves the new trilogy:

http://redlettermedi...kett/star-wars/

All three movies crushed to bits. Hilarious to watch.

On a personal note: I don't think the new trilogy is THAT bad. It's just not AS good as the originals.

I'd recommend watching the original trilogy (4,5,6) first.

The prequels aren't as bad as their reputation (except for maybe Episode 2) but they certainly aren't representative of the series' best.

While I appreciate the impact Star Wars had on pop culture and filmmaking in general, I don't think it's anywhere near as good as most people make it out to be. It's a husk of universe, really, inhabited by simple archetypal characters devoid of any real substance.

Either you never read any of the hundreds of publications of the STRWRS universe or your a Trekkie just trolling;)

I you really want to read upper crap then look out for the Chiss Admiral trilogy, then some Yuuzhon whatever comes along, and the best:

Everytime a new Dark Lord rises, and yea, again it's a Skywalker (Caden or something?) And yea, forgetting aal what has caused order 66 and such Luke encourages marriage and all that ****...attachement and all those things.

Just for it to cause another Sith Empire to rise...again... rebels defeat them... again.

And it goes on like that for several hundreds of years. If you want a good laugh, look into the Expended Universe,

And before Sidious.... the story was the same, you know... like...again. Sith rises, Sith defeated... 1000 years later... Sith rises again.... Sith get defeated again.

For me it ends at EP6, the prophecy has been fullfilled, balance is brought to the Force.

(I still have to wait and see what Disney had in min though)

Before you know it people will throw names like Mara Jade and something.
