Looking back, do you still feel as upset about the ending, or did you come to terms with it?

A lot of us had 5 years worth of gaming and hundreds of dollars go right down the crapper. That's not the kind of thing you forget about easily.

- I actually believe Mr. Priestly on his insistence of no ending material in the next DLC, despite his history. That will be another $20 saved. I hope BioWare feels good about cashing in the fanbase.

I curious what makes you believe him this time?

personally, I think he probably means it now, but bioware is notorious for flip-floping

It still stands out in my mind as one of the biggest disappointments of any game I've ever cared about and enjoyed playing. Really, it just felt like sloppy writing and while trying to go for an edgy tragic ending it just left me with a feeling of hey that'd be cool in a 2 hour movie...but I just spent well over 100 hours on this trilogy and 30+ on this one game alone and have been given more questions than answers. O and since every ending is so incredibly similar I felt even more cheated for having been a completionist (hurray war assets for giving me "better" colors). Shepards fate aside, I really could have settled for no cenimatic and just a long drawn out text slide of what the fate of all the galaxies species was instead of a to-be-continued/use your imagination ending.

And as long as Casey Hudson is still involved with Mass Effect my "drawn conclusion ending" will remain shepard dies (even though he gets one breath, it's in vain and he dies rather quickly since normandy abandons him... and he was in space.....on an exploding space station/ship). All the stranded species die slowly from lack of resources and being nearly wiped out with no use of the mass relays (except for maybe krogan since they can breed again potentially!) , and that leaves my bleak version of ME 4 sequel to being either about Krogan farmville learning to raise earth livestock and/or a Gilligans Island parody starring the crew of the normandy on "jungle planet", of course joker was made for the role of Gilligan so it'd prolly be the best of the 2 choices!

I would never judge it as a bad ending. For those who played mass effect trilogy since the beginning and were able to make a connection to the story, to its characters, to their own Commander Shepard, it is impossible not to see the way things were heading to. For me at least, it was.

Not that I knew that those endings would be exactly as they were, but I could not ignore the fact that the whole ME3 plot is about reparation and farewells. Since the beginning of the trilogy, the threat of the reapers were unimaginable big and impossible to deal with without a sacrifice as big as what the threat stood for.

Shepard was not just a common videogame hero, he was essentially human. That’s because great part of him (or her) are just us. Even knowing that some might think the choices were too limited. But Shepard was a hero, indeed. And as a hero, he (she) should make the ultimate sacrifice to face the ultimate threat against life as a whole. Yes, Shepard was a hero, but not a super hero, a human one, a great one.

I do agree that the original endings had a lack of care from EA or Bioware, forgetting to realize how important it was to give answers to some questions, even in a moment were the whole galaxy is about to be wiped out. Lack of time would be too close to the real world, but we don’t want reality, we want getaways.

For me, the Extended Cut solved the problem and gave me the answers I needed to make my own conclusions. I did feel bad about Liara (my LI), Garrus (who died during the conduit run), about Joker who lost its love affair (I choose destroying the synthetics), about Anderson – who made a great mentor during the plot – but that’s just the way it is. We’re grown enough to understand that choices bring consequences. Life at the galaxy prevailed, the Krogan had a new beginning, future generations had a fresh start and all thanks to Shepard choices. I can live with that.

And as if it wasn’t enough, in the end, a single breath from a N7 soldier among a pile of debris, restored my confidence that even facing impossible odds, we can still believe.

I reviled the endings mostly for the same reasons that others have already stated, but what really bothered me more than others, it seems, was Bioware's cliffhanger ending on Shepard's fate. They couldn't have just followed through on their promise of different outcomes? Shepard's fate is EXACTLY the kind of plot point that would qualify as a vast difference in conclusions without really taking extra work. He's dead, or he's not. Just make it clear.

Shepard either dies, becomes a part of all life in the galaxy, is ascended into a higher plane of exsistence, or lives.

Seems like he or she does have multiple outcomes, but just not ones that you like.

But I'm going to drop this now, because I don't want to fight.

No, that's just your interpretation of the ending.

Mine is more simple : he died...

And my confidence in BW with him...

So yes, I'm always upset...

But my purse feel heavier  every day since...

:)

Finally something good happens from all this craphorse!

JPR out!

I've never been upset with the ending specifically - I've been upset (and angry, and bitter) with ME3 as a whole - a mediocre corridor shooter that it turned out to be. I guess I still am, but... it's been a year. I mellowed out a lot, or I just don't care enough anymore. I realized that I still love the universe - as it was before ME3 wrecked it. I still love Shepard - as he was before ME3 wrecked him too. So I guess, what it comes down to - I just sort of erased ME3 from my personal canon. It didn't happen. I can live with that.

Of course, the multiplayer is a blast to play and the sole reason the game still resides on my hard drive. I didn't play any of the SP DLCs and haven't touched the main campaign since the EC came out, so the moment I get bored with the multiplayer, I'll be done with the ME universe for good.

Still jaded - because I feel that in ME3 you lose; no matter what you do.

The EC was very well executed; I like it and it's superbly done even though it doesn't change HOW you get to choose the RGB color - which is my main gripe.

With ME3 you have The Ultimate Evil that you have been fighting against for three whole games pop up in the last couple of minutes and it allows you to end the game.
Just before that happens Shepard and the player have essentially lost the game; they tried and failed in the end.
Because The Ultimate Evil gets to dictate terms you have "lost" ME1 and ME2 as well. Reject it's options in the extended cut and you actually lose for real!

You never even had the option to "lose" like this in ME1 or ME2. Even if you carefully planned out the entire game of ME2 to let Shepard die you still won ME2; you got the job done Shepard's way.
So in that regard I feel that ME3, in the end, delivered something that wasn't in line with expectations.

It's water under the bridge at this point.
Those last few minutes were an interesting narrative experiment, one that I didn't care for, that I'll always remember!

This pretty much describes my attitude and my behaviour post-EC as well.

Haven't played any ME game since EC. Haven't bought any ME3 DLCs either... Can't decide if I am still upset or just not interested anymore, I guess.

That's pretty much it for me too. I have not purchased any of the ME3 DLC's either. I really just can't gather up any incentive to play something that isn't fixing the ending up. I guess in a way that means 'loosing interest' with still a tiny amount of hope that whilst there are DLC's coming out maybe, one day, eventually they will listen and fix. The only times I really check the forum with any kind of regularlity is around the time a new DLC is due to arrive soon - that glimmer of hope just waiting to see if any of them are going to continue the rest of the story and wake up Shep. Then for the most part I might check back once every 6 weeks till there is word of another DLC.

Ruined Mass Effect. And I really, really liked Mass Effect.

Bad nonsense is still bad. Haven't forked over a dime to BioWare since making the acquaintance of Star Jar.

The EC cleared up the major problems with the ending for me. In the original, it looked as though the galaxy was torn to bits by relay explosions. Your team on the ground just ... vanishes without a trace. I'm 100% with ME after the EC.

I try to not think about it too much but I always cringe when I remember the original final mission and ending concept and get sad over what it could have been.

I find certain themes pop up time and again on here. As such, though I typed this months ago, it still applies now:

" There is, friend, a very big reason why so many people are still pissed about the ending. There is a reason why they don't get over it, why they constantly come on here and complain. It's not about being a hater, it's not about trolling, and it's not about being part of some great righteous cause - the reason you feel like that is in fact due to Bioware's writing talents.

What, you say? Writing talents? The guys who wrote this ****ty ending? Well, first off, the two guys who wrote that little diddy didn't write much else, that was done by others. And it was those others that make you so passionate to criticize the ending constantly and demand a better one.

People like Mass Effect for one main reason: the character interaction, not the plot. If everyone came for the plot, ME2 would not be seen as a shining jewel of games. Mass Effect stands among a very select few games (along with The Walking Dead and Journey, personally) that have made players emotionally attached to and invested in the characters, something that most games don't do. Mass Effect is special for that reason - it's why you love it so.

Now, I can understand disliking the ending from a critical perspective for all its thematic leaps, plot holes and contrivances, and that's all fine. But people have a lingering, passionate hatred for this ending, and that is not simply the result of a badly written ending. We've all seen movies and read books that were ****, we lamented that they wrecked a perfectly good series or premise, but we get over it because it's just a story. But Mass Effect is different because of the character focus. At the end, the characters (including Shepard himself) are shoved off to the side so as to focus entirely on the plot and explain what is happening. Coupled with bad writing, the ending simply does not give us our emotional closure and connection to the characters we love so much, so we leave the ending not only thinking that the ending itself was bad, but also that we are emotionally unfulfilled because we no endgame character interaction to bring everything full circle and provide closure. We are left feeling empty - and this is why we continue to hate it.

If you forget your love of the characters and simply look at the ending, you should realize that, yeah, it's just another stupid Gainax Sci Fi ending. Nothing new there. Tons of them. Just a **** up by a couple of idiots who thought this would be cool. You'll laugh at it - because it's dumb.

So instead of continuing to rave on about the ending, just look at it for what it is ( a classic big dumb sci fi ending) and praise Mass Effect for what makes it so good - the characters we all know and love. Surely all that good stuff that makes up the remainder of the game and indeed the series should not be permanently tainted by a dumb ending - it's dumb, you should laugh at it, not rage.

Be grateful that it went that long before something retarded came up. Most sci fi doesn't last halfway."

I will never come to terms with it. It's an abomination of an ending as I've ever seen. Totally killed all replay value and the games will forever sit and collect dust in my game closet. Maybe I'll go back to Mass Effect 1 and 2 again someday, but 3 will never see my console again.
