Vega seems like an average Marine in his behaviour and appearance...ALSO...James's voice actor (good old Freddy) does a great job ....but that's just me

Sure he is cut and some would say sexualized to a point.... but you do not see him walking into battle wearing only a sock

There is, however, probably enough tequila left on an unwashed glass from last week to get Ashley sloshed enough to do a striptease in the CIC.

I'm amazed by the number of people who don't see the change in character models as anythign other than blatant attempts to get sales from the "Look...boobies. I must play this" crowd. Then again, when we take into account all the other crap EA obviously forced into this game to snag a few more bucks, I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

I'm amazed at the number of people who have no idea how game development actually works but think they do. Or how developer/publisher relations actually work. The more ignorant people are, the more opinions they have, or so it would seem.

Is there some unwritten law that Bioware is forbidden from making sexy characters in their own game?

After going out of their way to make the female leads not sexualized in the first game, BioWare is acquired by EA (turning the normal developer-publisher relationship into more of a master-servant one) and the characters are increasingly sexualized. When the person who owns the IP, the software used to develop the IP, collects all the cash for the product, and signs your checks says they want something in the game, it goes in.

Here's a fair comparison. The US goes about developing new weapon systems through two methods: contracting out the development to a company like Lockheed or H&K or doing it themselves. When Lockheed developed the F-35, it was given some basic requirements by the DoD. The developed the design, partly on their own dime, and then got paid for everything by Uncle Sam. The requirements on the project aren't as tight and the government control is more lax than the Navy's development of its railgun. The Navy designed and built a railgun in-house. As such, the government micromanages the project to a far greater extent. Instead of Lockheed signing an engineer's check who is then able to work more freely, the US government is paying said engineer directly and he invariably has greater confines to work in.

When we apply the obviously tighter confines of working for a publisher's in-house development team and remember how EA tends to dry up IPs before axing the studio outright, it's not a jump of logic to say that EA wanted "sexier" characters, that EA wanted multiplayer, that EA wanted magazines and reloading, that EA is to blame for many of the faults listed by various people in regards to Mass Effect. EA and BioWare are not the classic publisher and developer. Unfortunately, the old standard of getting funding from a publisher to produce a game which is still owned by the developer is dying. At best, developers are becoming independent contractors working on publisher owned IPs. Halo is one example of this. Another is Devil May Cry. Capcom forced the Ninja Theory to come up with a drastically different character model for the reboot, and the sales suffered tremendously as a result.

So don't tell me I don't understand "how game development actually works but think [I] do. Or how developer/publisher relations actually work," when there are copious examples supporting my stance and you haven't provided evidence to refute it.

Real things? This is an issue that's always been there. Behold, six quotes from the first page alone that wish to challenge the design decisions in this game:

Finn the Jakey wrote...Because deliberately sexing up characters for no logical reason other than ****** appeal is incredibly patronising towards the players.

Mouton_Alpha wrote...I can't speak for others, but since I am not 16 anymore, I am always aware how sex appeal is exploited in mass media. Thus, when a character suddenly gets crudely modified to be "hot" while not providing anything of value, I consider it an attempt to influence me and feel insulted.

78stonewobble wrote..Personally I just dislike when it's made so over the top and so ridiculous that it breaks immersion and becomes... imho unrealistic and plain silly.

Arcian wrote...When the attractiveness serves no purpose beyond fanservice, it's not justified. Example: chainmail bikinis in fantasy games.
EDI's Mechamilk jugs is a good example in Mass Effect. I personally love the design from a fanservice standpoint, but it made no sense and making the token synthetic woman a literal sex object was a bit too much. Even if she's an "infiltration unit".

CynicalShep wrote...Because everybody's personality changed for the worse (save for Jack) and everybody got their rounds of silicone and botox. See, if I have to choose a love interest I will always pick a stubborn marine over an emotional glorified bimbo.

The Night Mammoth wrote...Because given their characters and a little context, EDI's body and Ashley's random makeover look ridiculous to me.

Dismissing the issue as fake is not the same as not agreeing with it and not a sign of maturity. Grow up.

Yep. Nothing. People have concerns about nothing at all. Let's just do this reductio ad absurdum, shall we? There are no valid complaints. Therefore, since there can't be anything wrong, there is no constructive discussion. And with no discussion, there's no reason for forums. So why are we on a forum? Why can we have constructive discussion? Why can there be valid complaints? Why can people be concerned about things?

I'll repeat what I have at the bottom of that post. Dismissing the issue as fake is not the same as not agreeing with it and not a sign of maturity. Grow up.

I suggest you follow that advice.

Still I remember owning a pair of neon green satin pants. ... To this day I still don't know the point of that -..-

SPANDEX! ... It's called spandex... Thank god it went out of fashion and it will be a couple a hundred years before it sorta makes a resurgence.

No wonder the reapers attack.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with mentioning what you think or doesn't think makes a game better from your subjective point of view.

Eg. gaming companies could learn to balance "sex sells" without ruining my immersion by putting characters in decent armor for battles and have the "semi erotica" (if needed) in an appropriate setting like a romance cutscene or the characters cabin.

That would make the whole thing more acceptable and appealing to me (just me) and maybe others who agree.

While mass effect games are far from the worst in this department it's still a minor annoyance when I notice it.

And personally when I make... anything... from dinner, build a computer or was able to program a game/software or make a piece of art. I'd try to avoid giving people minor annoyances.

Jeez... It's like an old wooden stair case with a slightly offset step. Why on earth wouldn't you nail it down? Nah I won't fix/improve anything on the staircase until everything is offset or falling apart.

It's simple: eyecandy sells. Without it, a game like Skyrim wouldn't even have sold from the bargainbin.
I'll stick to Mass Effect though, I simply like its setting a lot better

As for EDI: she used the burned android body of Dr Eva, which was supposed to look extremely human in every way. What else did you expect? Dr. Eva infiltrating the Mars expedition looking like a Geth or a LOKI mech or something?

The skin was charred off the body, so after cleaning up, only the metallics were left. Now try to dress up a human-shaped metallic robot without it looking rediculous. The best attempts to do so were made by Sorayama Hajime, and he too figured out that the less clothing, the better the result.

Yes, EDI's body may look sexy, but it makes sense in every way. They could've picked a different storyline option to give her a body, but in that case, you would've ended up with a LOKI mech, the dog version in the worst case.

. Except that an infiltration unit should not be drawing attention to itself.  EDI's body most certainly draws attention

Dr. Eva was the infiltration unit, and she was designed to look perfectly human, with a perfect semblance of skin over it, so clothes looked completely normal on her as well. The skin tissue got removed before EDI took over, resulting in a metallic skin. Clothes don't look good on metallic skin because they make absolutely no sense.
