Should they make the movie i think James Franco is the man for the job. He looks similar (though he may need to do some weight training) and his voice while different is not worlds apart from Mark Meers Shepard. Franco could probably imitate it well if it's that important for him to sound like Mark Meer. He is also in the right age range for Shepard who i think is in his early to mid 30's.

On top of this i think JF has the acting ability to portray a slightly wise ass yet Paragon Shepard.

I'm an actor, so cast me! 22, can pull of late 20s!
j/k I know I would look to young,

In all seriousness, OP I don't think james franco is a right fit but you are right, he has the ability to act and would be a welcome choice because I fear any chance to cast a Shepard willl lead to the standard action hero jock look, not people with good acting ability (Not that people with that look can't act)

It would be interesting to see a Femshep, or non-white shep. It would be a change of pace from sci-fi with the standard white male lead, also give a chance to show Shepard as a representative of humanity. But someone who is a good actor and can convey the essence of Shepard truthfully, whatever that may be. I would put an open call for men and women of all races, and they would get a pair of sides, one paragon and one renegade, and then they can pick someone with flexibility.
Just my 2 cents

Idris Elba would make a good Shepard. I'm open to any race or gender with Mass Effect, given that the game allows you to play as any race or gender. That being said, I wouldn't involve Shepard in a Mass Effect movie. I'd create new characters. However...I don't think video game adaptations are very interesting. Most games are highly derivative of movies we've already seen.

Shane West, he's the right age, the right build, he's not too main stream so afforablity, is not an issue, and he can act.

Biggest douche in existence. Yeah, that'll improve Shepard's likeability.

They need to cast someone North American anyway. Tired of those crappy fake accents.

Obviously. Acting is to 90% about good looks anyway.

That is the single dumbest thing I've heard about acting.

A ME movie with Shepard would disappoint 90% of the fan base...
(Edit: to answer the topic, non would be best)

Redemption might be a good plot for a movie.

good looks = charisma

a good looking person can tell complete **** and your brain is more likely to believe it.
when someone talks about which actors they like its in most cases determined wheter
or not the look of said actor appeals to them. sure you can also be ugly and good in acting
because you are put in a certain role, where you'd believe an ugly person to fit in.

The other 10% are faking emotions and stuff... which honestly just about anyone can do
with a little bit of training. Like in a job interview (where good looking persons of course have
major advantages too, even though their "acting skills" are no better than the rest).

I'd like Karl Urban a lot in the role of Shepard. Great acting ability, great sense of character "envelopment", quite well-built for action roles. Even if he's not the very best option from a fan point-of-view, I honestly believe he wouldn't disappoint.
