Will there EVER be multiplayer/Co-op like Neverwinter Nights had?

Just wondering if I'm the only one who is going to miss those features -- personally I'd rather have BioWare work on multiplayer/co-op than new adventure expansions right now... but perhaps that's me.

I remember stepping into the modules created by someone, having a storyteller right there running the game for a group of us... it was like a tiny tiny mmo hehe.

So what do you guys think? Is there a demand for this? Is it even possible to do with Dragon Age?

I loved Neverwinter Nights' MP client, spent a couple years playing on a server, leading roleplay events, even making a druid grove and a few outlying farmlands for the server itself. I don't think it'll happen with DA:O, not yet, anyway.

It could be possible that the DLC team could implement something like this for the future, but as they stated that they didn't want online play for the OC... I could see it being problematic for console players.

I wonder if it's possible to mod the code so that some form of online play could be managed.

And whether or not this would be legal.

It's not possible without the source code. Even with the source code, it'd be really difficult and never any good. An engine must be built from the ground up for multiplayer. Seriously, it's not even a remote possibility. There's more chances that we get green and pink fluffly bunny as a nemesis than getting any sort of multiplayer.

Personally, I'm really happy that we can have this community to share with. Better than any sort of multiplayer.

<P>To be honest it doesn't really make sense to me that they went purely single player, forgoing a GREAT idea/feature like the MP/Co-op of Neverwinter Nights. Image IPB

It's odd to me to have such a HUGE social presence online for a single player game - I really hope it will come in the future at least... if BioWare can make that possible. Image IPB

It would require an engine rewrite. As such, no; it's very very unlikely. Now, for Dragon Age 2? Could be... depends on whether they have started it yet and whether they feel they need to add it. I have a feeling that DA2 would probably be starting fairly soon after DA releases. After all, DA started around 7 years ago... right after NWN.

I wouldn't be suprised to see a full box sequel come out with mulitplayer, especaly if the toolset takes off in a big way.

Personally I'm grateful that Bioware is concentrating on Single player games. I only ever play MMORPGs for story content anyhow....one gets SO tired of dealing with p.u.g.s and twiddling your thumbs while waiting for raids to begine on the OFF chance you MIGHT get one piece of nice equipment out of the deal...and don't even get me STARTED on the whole "grinding for l33t g3@r" crap.

I'd place multiplayer in a "nice to have" category, but in end, I'd rather have a deep, involving single player storyline, than any sort of multiplayer features.

Guessing you didn't play Neverwinter Nights... It wouldn't make it an MMO at all, just add different ways to enjoy the original content as well as the community created stuff ... very cool ways. Image IPB I loved having a storyteller taking a me and a few others through his 'world', the story they imagined up and forged for people to enjoy.

I really don't think BioWare should forget about that - It was an incredible game feature which I'm surprised isn't being pushed to further limits.

There have been many discussions about this in the other Bioware forum ;)

However, if someone asks me if I would like a Multiplayer client like NWN, I say yes. That does not mean a MMO. The NWN concept is that you can make a module for friends to enjoy, or at best a PW for a small group. always prefered that one over MMO grinds. I am very concerned (scared maybe?) that the NWN style Multiplayer will go away as NWN and NWN2 get older. I dont see any plans from Bioware yet regarding DA and a Multiplayer game/DLC. but that might change. I hope so. A good compromse can be seperate clients, so the Singleplayer client works different (in nterface and rules) than the Multiplayer one. A bit how shooters have devided their Singleplayer and Multiplayer clients. (You get the "switch to Singleplayer/Multiplayer?" question and it switches to your choice)

But that takes a redesign of the engine, i'm afraid, and the question is if EA wants to fund all that, or move it to a possible DA2.

I do feel that Singleplayer and Multiplayer can benifit from each other, if the clients are seperate, as modders and scripters from both interests would be able to help each other out.

But.. maybe first see if the current Ruleset of DA:O could actually work in a MP enviroment or not. What I see of it, and it being realtime, i'm being hopefull.

It's all in the hands of EA and Bioware.. I can only hope for the future. As NWN's future seems to be just another MMO we have too many off. A NWN style MP client with toolset support would still be a fresh wind in our MMO filled RPG community.

But so is a good Singleplayer game, like DA:O. I fully admit that. I remain to be a fan of both a good Singleplayer game, and a NWN style Multiplayer client.

I hope DA never gets MP. In NWN I hate running accross an NPC and guess what? That other person clicked on him/got near him first. So now I have to sit there and hope the other person makes the decisions I would. Honestly, isn't MP what the PnP is being made for?

If you look at everything we have seen about dragon age:origins it seems to me as though bioware are focusing very intently on establishing an intense and engaging world in their first release, establishing a beach-head if you will. once they have created their world and we have all gotten hooked on it im sure multiplayer options will follow in sequels. the trouble is that with their first release set in the world of dragon age, a world they obviously want to be a success, they have focussed intently on providing a very good player experience, which is easiest to do when the player 's experience is (fairly) controlled.. hence major focus on story and no multiplayer option

Many of you bring up good points about the possibility of a DA2 where the features found in NWN could be implemented. I'd be happy with that, especially because I'm quite certain DA will either have sequels [DA:O has like, one continent, there's a huge world map still left to discover] or, and this is a long shot, Dragon Age: Online will become BioWare's high fantasy MMORPG after Star Wars inevitably takes off. That could just be wishful thinking though Image IPB

Deacon I don't think that's unrealistic at all. I see a massive story and undertaking with DA:2 using the current engine and toolset and then DA: Online following.

By same engine, I just mean they improve on the current one but don't build from the ground up again.

I think the reason it went single player is because of the social interactions of the NPC characters in your group. They did not write scripts for two+ PC to NPC interactions. So when an NPC in the group wants an answer to something only one PC would be able to answer and the other PC is a mute. You can put multiplayer in games like these but it takes away from the NPC interaction. I think Bioware wanted to get the best NPC interactions they can cause your choices so greatly affect story so they made it single player.

Anything is possible - remember the NWN development team are responsible for this game and they KNOW how much of a difference MP gaming made for Neverwinter Nights. The Dungeonmaster toolkit meant I experienced incredible RP moments for years in that game - not only playing in other people's campaigns but running my own. I can't begin to explain to you what its like to imagine and build an adventure, and then take six people through it who are all roleplaying their hearts out. When they interact with npcs, the dungeonmasters possess and roleplay them etc - the world is totally dynamic, immersive and anything is possible. Imagine playing DA when your companions have full non scripted conversations and any action is a possibility (just ask the DM and he will decide on possibilities and do correct dice rolls). It was that amazing.

If DA becomes successful - who knows. Maybe there could be DLC that allows online play and a DM toolkit. I know there is a whole community of NWN players that would cry in happiness at the prospect. And these are pure roleplayers through and through.

Seconded.

People seem to confuse this with Multiplayer co-op, or an MMO.

Really things like the NWN persistent worlds made me play NWN for years.  It does not detract from the single experience one bit. It ADDS so much more playability.
To enjoy the game in different settings and worlds under your liking. To Roleplay with friends and other players. Or just wage war and mess around in a roleplay light setting.

How much extra work would it mean for Bioware?? give a good toolset and the possibility of multiplayer clients and the mod community will take it from there?

If not in this game. i really hope they think of it in future games. This set-up was perfect for this D&D based game.
Far superior from an MMO as you can tailor the game to your liking and create new stories and worlds constantly.

Dragon Age is intended to be the spiritual sequel to Baldur's Gate. In that regard, I think multi-player is an "extra" component, and by far unnecessary. I for one hope it never gets implemented in any way, shape or form to DAO; its a single player rpg focused on an epic story arc and it should remain that way.

I sincerely doubt there will ever be multiplayer in DA:O. I hope there will not by multiplayer in any of its successors.
