Assuming any of the people who used to post in the old Jacob fan thread are still around...


Did the Brynn Cole reveal change your opinion of the character? Or is he still your favorite character?
 
If he was once your favorite character, but no longer is, who did you consider your favorite character now?

For those who might have had him as your canon Shep's LI, did it cause you to redo your canon playthrough and have Shep romance someone else instead in Mass Effect 2? Or did you you keep the 'dumped for Brynn' playthrough as your canon?

Assuming any of Jacob's fans (past or present) are still around and haven't rage quit the BSN, I'm genuinely curious how you handled the whole Brynn Cole reveal.

It's a lot better if you didn't romance him. I'm surprised people responded so negatively since I didn't think anybody actually did romance the old boy.

I quite liked the hookup with Brynn. Sure it was a bit underdeveloped, but given the circumstances that's fair enough. I like the conversation in the hospital where Jacob drops the baby bombshell. I was all like "Hey, good on ya, son!" According to the Datapad app, the baby shall be named 'Hackett'. Which, ummm...I suppose that's a bit better than 'Shepard'.

I had a playthrough where he got romanced, not my canon though. I didn't alter my game after so Jacob just ended up looking like a cheating jerk, I've set up my playthrough a certain way I'm not going to alter it just to compensate for the writers dropping the ball. Can't say he was ever my favorite but I liked the character, still do, what I don't like is what the writers did to the character. Especially with that awkward post break-up dialogue in the Hospital.
"Hey Shep, know the girl I cheated on you with? Turns up I knocked her up, going to name the kid after you."

I wasn't a HUGE Jacob fan from ME2, but I did like having a relatively normal guy who offered an "everyman" perspective.

My first playthrough in ME3 was on my FemShep that had romanced Jacob, which didn't end well of course...and it did annoy me to no end that Bioware decided that was the right way to go with Jacob (and Shepard's reactions...)

I think he's fine as long as you didn't romance him apart from that weird "do you feel it" line and having Brynn want to name the kid "Shepard" rather than just leaving it as "we'll name them after you" so the player can fill in their Shepard's name there. I like seeing my squad/former squad have positive things happen/have relationships+family, etc. outside being attached to Shepard.

Yeah Shepard's reaction in that scene was certainly underwhelming.

You said it Kaos_Scorpio,he was more of a everyday guy which for realism sake you need a few. I think he was a overall good character not great.Bioware did butcher a few peoples roles but they may have down the road plans for a Taylor-Cole child story development in the future,seeing he is a character they have used prominently in a separate side game(handheld i believe)he is the franchises punching bag and i do wonder about some of the comments i have read but some people know it was a badly written part 3 especially for some files,he is more boring then most the great characters from the game like ME2 Archangel,Wrex etc.

Admittedly, I have never been a fan of Jacob. I wanted to be. He had a cool back-story, and his frustration with the system makes sense. But it never seemed that BioWare could ever write him appropriately. It's like they couldn't get off of the "poor, black kid" meme. He should have been written just like any other character and allowed to stand on his own two feet. Instead they tossed cliché after cliché out of his mouth in an effort to make him sound hip, but ended up making him sound like a parrot.

Even his fidelity to a romanced Shepard was stereotypical. So much for the priiiiiiizzzzze. But good old Jake didn't even drop a dime to Shepard and let her know that he was kicking her to the curb. He just goes and hooks up with a Cerberus scientist and knocks her up. So true.

Jacob is a character that got the short end of the stick in the ME universe. He could have been so much more, but wasn't. The Cole reveal only proves that point.

I think that Jacob's treatment in ME3 reflects Bioware's data collection from ME2 -- they probably saw that he was the least-often-romanced option, and probably by a wide margin. I never romanced him, so it wasn't until I came here that I had any idea that his situation was the same no matter what.

That's the best romance resolution for him.  He volunteered, as they say.

So jacob has an absent dad who turns out to be a sexual deviant,he romances Shep and declares his undying love for her,but six months later cheats and knocks someone else up. Disapointing that Bioware ran with the old tired stereotype of the unfaithful Blackman.

Also blames Shepard for it ("was I supposed to wait forever?") and then the awkward stuff like naming the kid Shepard (or Brynn getting in Shepard's face if you angrily confront Jacob about it). The Romance DLC blog had some good thoughts on the entire mess.

Jacob declared undying love for Shep? That seems wildly out of character. Guess I'll have to look up that romance.

Jacob really turned out to be a scumbag. 6 months is nothing. Ashley/Liara/Kaiden went two years thinking Shep was dead and still was in love when s/he returned.

But in a way, I like that one of the romances leads to Shepard being betrayed. But it's unfair for people who actually invested their Shep into a Jacob romance, but that character was bad news bears from the get-go lbr.
