I'll jump on that bandwagon too, Kaidan's writer(s) deserve to be lauded.

Indeed. Kaidan is awesome. I liked him way better in ME3 than in ME1.

Wait, it says that John Dombrow also wrote The Illusive Man. In which sections did he write him?

Going through ME1 again. I like Wrex so much more in the first game, he actually seems off his nut and deadly, and not just in that "durr I'm a Krogan you go SMASHY SMASH!" kind of way that developed from ME2 onward.

He left Bioware after ME2

And Thane got a character assassination by lame space ninja in leather pants on ME3 :bandit:

The writers did the right thing in ignoring Thane's fans when they demanded he be cured in Mass Effect 3. The first words he says to you in Mass Effect 2 are, "I'm dying," and we are told that Kepral's Syndrome is both fatal and incurable. Thane's character development throughout Mass Effect 2 is tied closely to his terminal illness, and having him be the first person to be cured with both be too saccharine and render pointless his character arc in Mass Effect 2. As such I think they got it right in killing Thane in Mass Effect 3. That, and his death scene was one of the more emotionally powerful scenes in the series.

Where the writers stumbled a bit was in not giving players who had Thane as an LI a chance to play the grieving widow. Squadmates should have acknowledged the loss and avoiding making passes at Shepard.

Lukas Kristjanson wrote Kaidan(in ME1), with some input from Chris L'Etoile and/or Drew, he also wrote Joker (not ME3) & Jacob. Oh, and he did Captain Kirrahe alongside Walters(in ME1, since I believe he moved to the DA team after ME2).

Mordin, my favorite! Notice how Weekes writes the quirkiest characters. My suspicions were correct, Mordin's new voice actor was why he didn't seem like the same character.

Tali (ME1) = Drew Karpyshyn (ME3) = Patrick Weekes (ME2) = Patrick Weekes

I wonder why Tali suddenly improved in characterization in ME2....God, Drew is so overrated.

Drew had some great high-level conceptual ideas, and helped formulate a terrific narrative arc in general, but he's an abysmal character writer. You can see as much from the first three ME books.

...And unlike, say, Kai Lang,Benezia is an actual character. All that achieved with even less screen time then space ninja had.
As for external appearance, writers are not responsible for that.

Funny thing is that Drew gave birth to Kai Leng in the book Mass Effect Retribution.

Wonder who f***ed it up when they wrote his parts in ME3

Chris Hepler. He f***ed up with Thane and EDI on ME3, and was the jerk that told fans the breathing scene was Shepard's last breath. Wouldn't surprise me if he mangled Kay Leng too, the guy is awful!

Well, I think he did a great job with EDI. Not much with Thane.

Now, about Shep's last breath... he probably was just joking. Anyway, if I were writer, I would never say something like that to the fans. I'd feel like a douche.

BTW, wasn't Kai Leng written by Mac?

Not very much consistency in that list. Wonder how much switching writers had to do with characters in ME3 being a pale shadow of who they were in previous games. Patrick Weekes wrote some of the better characters, though.

I don't agree with that assessment, at least if we are talking about the main cast. I think most of the characters who were on both the ME1 and ME3 squads had far more personality in ME3 than they did in ME1.

Mac Walters wrote Kaidan and Ashley on Mars. It's possible he wrote their scenes during the Citadel Coup as well, but that's just a guess on my part.

Dialogue during missions is typically done by the mission's author.

The character author writes all the interaction that happens on the ship or during big character events.

Mac wrote Mars (he wrote the whole prologue, which explains the dialogue), so he wrote Kaidan, Ashley, and Liara, as well as James, for those scenes.

I approve of this list. I think John is the best writer from the current team. Definitely lead writer material. Cathleen did a great job too.

Luke left long ago to work permanently on DA (blessings!), and Chris left the company (with Drew gone, that means the entire senior writing staff evaporated as well during the course of ME2—I personally think this explains a lot about the state of ME3).

Sylvia thankfully packed her time capsule and headed to the DA team before ME3 was even released, and Patrick is now helping out with DA3 as well.

Unfortunately, with all the talent now on DA, it doesn't leave a lot left for the new IP if John doesn't step up.

ME1 characters, especially ones written by Drew Karpyshyn, were pale shadows of themselves because he simply doesn't let his characters develop.
