I loves me a good tragimance. They're the only kind of romance that REALLY sticks. For me anyway.

I find myself really enjoyng both, actually. It depends on the character. With Hawke, I was perfectly fine romancing Anders despite the fact I knew it'd probably end very, very badly. But with, say, Shepard, I'd say my initial fangirl reaction was more akin to, "OH WUT THE HELLZ, BIOWARE!!!11!!1! one one one."

Anyway, I like both. Preferably, I like having both in the same game, so I can experience the pain and the happiness across different playthroughs.

To me it really depends on the characters and the story they're in. Also the execution. Execution is everything.  If something is just sad through and through then it's just depressing (in a bad way) and if it's all sunshine and lolipops all the way through it becomes boring. You gotta get it just right. It's like soup. I don't want it to be so cold it's disgusting and I don't want it to give me blisters in my mouth.
... That metaphor kinda got away from me... :?

Do you guys have any preference in term of personality? Most of the relationships in Bioware games have been very mushy. I would like for an alpha male type personality. The LI be something like the leader of a fraction, and he's not very experience with relationship, so he can be a bit crude toward you. I would like a dynamic where you try to convince the LI to think more about himself instead of his work.

I seem to like damaged guys: Fenris and Zevran are the ones I just can't stop romancing.  But I don't like it when there's this... feeling of "You must fix him with your love!!!"/"You are his ONLY CHANCE TO BE HAPPY!!" like I got when I tried the Anders romance, I prefer the feeling of being the emotional support while they work things out themselves.

So a guy who has emotional issues, but who doesn't need me to fix him, but can fix himself (or work on fixing himself; Fenris is still a work in progress, but he's improving!) while I encourage him.

No, not really. I mean, it's my character doing the romancing, not me. xD And who he/she finds attractive depends entirely on him/her. All I want is a well-writen, new, interesting character whom the player can interact with quite a lot. And by new I don't just mean SOMEONE new, I mean a kind of personality we haven't seen before. Bioware has yet to fail me on that though, so I'm not too worried.

I would definitely enjoy seeing a guy that has a more dominant personality! I didn't feel like either Anders or Fenris was an equal partner to very dominant Hawke (you don't really get the choice to be passive in DA2 imo). Anders was extremely dependent on Hawke to the point of Hawke being really the only thing keeping him sane, and Fenris shies away from fully committing to Hawke for quite a while.

I'd enjoy seeing someone who would step up to be an equal (or dominant) partner with the PC rather than being submissive to him. The closest I can think of to an example like this would be Morrigan--she has a very strong personality, and she has no problem telling the Warden what she wants and how she wants it done. Of course, there is more depth to her character than that, which is why she's compelling to some players. I just feel like we haven't had any male romance options that have had similar independence and drive.

In terms of personality, I like compassionate characters who champion a just cause, or care for other people's wellbeing. I perceive Anders in DA2 as being that way, with his clinic and his work with the mage underground. I liked him in DA:A, but in DA2 his personality was closer to someone I could see myself dating, whereas in Awakening he rarely took anything seriously.

I like characters with emotional baggage as well, and I had thought about going after Fenris initially, but I found his personality ultimately offputting. The fact that he allowed his personal experience to cloud his opinion of all mages is unacceptable to me, and for all that he ****es about slavery while hiding up in his mansion, he never actually does anything about it except when it affects him directly. Whereas Anders regularly put his freedom and life at risk to help others.

I never perceived Anders as someone who needed to be "fixed". Helped, maybe, but not fixed. My Hawkes love Anders as a person (and I love him as a character) because of his devotion to his cause. They always understood and accepted that, for Anders, duty came before love. They all felt the exact same way, and were prepared to do whatever it took to further his cause, because it was a cause they were also passionate about.

I was talking about my character as well because in real life, I would prefer for the guy to be mushy and romantic like Alistair, but in roleplaying, I find Alistair a bit too sweet. My character would romance Anders while in real life, I probably wouldn't see him as a romantic interest.

Have to agree with this, especially the last part ^_^

That said, a hard stern kind of guy would be interesting.

Also, an older man. Not necessarily stern; could be thoughtful and gentle, like Duncan.

And lastly perhaps new species ... qunari, spirit/demon, etc.

Just anything new and unexpected ... though even if BW supply us with two rather typical male LIs, I'm sure I still won't be disappointed, because I know they'll be well-written.

I find that, personally, I have trouble feeling comfortable with romances that are more . . . alpha male, as you put it. My characters have different reasons for romancing whomever they romanced, but I have a hard time with romancable characters I feel I have to pry emotion out of.

I usually prefer characters, as Plaintiff said, who I perceive to be good people doing just work. I'd never be able to romance a character who I felt was morally reprehensible, never, no matter how pretty or charismatic they may be.

And the more romantic (or "mushier") the better. Alistair was never too sweet for me, and Anders practically confesses his eternal love for you at your first meeting, so . . . more characters like that!

Edited to add:

I would love to romance a qunari, I could just imagine the awkwardness of the romance.
PC: I love you.
Qunari: You need stronger teeth and thicker armor.
PC: For what?
Qunari: You'll see.
^_^
I just love the banter between Morrigan and Sten. I'm not sure how it would work since we don't know how the qunari would react to S/S relationship. It's likely that it would only possible with a Tal-Vashoth.
Romancing spirit doesn't sound that fun. We already romance Justice through Anders in DA2. He just seems very single minded and only cares about the aspect of justice.
As for demon, they could definitely use Cole. We need more unstable and crazy romance in DA.

I don't know if a demon would work, since its sort of one-sided in terms of their favor.

As for personalities, I wouldn't  necessarily mind seeing a more dominating personality, but I think it would be difficult to really get across in-game. Like for me, Morrigan was a dominating personality and a very aggressive romance. Something along those lines works but its sort of subdued in its nature. Jacob comes to mind as coming off too strong as a romance from Mass Effect 2. Same with Miranda, now that I think of it. So it is a hard balance to make it work, but hey, all is good.

I would also argue Fenris is somewhat alpha in his personality but he has a lot more complexity going on in his romance arc, one that is more about confusion within himself.

Just wanted to point out that this isn't entirely true.  He clearly does involve himself, because he has a banter with Aveline where she thanks him for tipping her (and her guards) off to a nest of slavers.  He may not have charged in there himself, but he's also not suicidal.  If it was a big enough group, he would have been smart to leave them to Aveline and her guardsmen - he's tough, but he's one guy.

If you're referring to the Orana thing, while I suppose they could have had him challenge Hawke in combat to the death right then and there, Fenris does want to live; going up against Hawke and co. alone, in the middle of Hadriana's lair, would be asking to die - or if he won against Hawke, be recaptured because Hawke would hardly go down without a fight and then he'd be badly weakened when he faced Hadriana.

But, y'know.  If you think he shouldn't care about his own life and freedom the most, I guess that's a good reason why you wouldn't care for him, because he does!  I don't think it's bad, personally, but different strokes for different folks.

Well, I do have sympathy for Fenris. I have no trouble understanding that he would put his own wellbeing first. It's what most people, myself included, do in real life. If he weren't so antagonistic towards mages generally, it wouldn't bug me so much. I especially dislike the initial meeting where he's all "Having a mage friend is like clutching a poisonous snake to your breast!" (not those exact words, of course).  I perceive him as being a hypocrite because he's always harping on about the dangers of magic, but when other people point out that Fenris himself has special powers that make him degrees of magnitude more dangerous than "normal" humans, he basically goes "That's not the same!".

Isabela is a mostly selfsh character also, but I don't find her any less appealling because of it. I wouldn't think badly of Anders either, if he was primarily concerned with his own safety and spent his time hiding rather than helping others. Few people in real life have the compassion and conviction to volunteer at an animal shelter, let alone acheive all that Anders does in his time at Kirkwall. It's a rare quality that I find extremely admirable, but I wouldn't dislike a person purely for not having that same quality. If that makes any sense. :D

Fenris has always reminded me of a woman who has trouble trusting men after being physically, sexually, and emotionally abused by men all her life. To a lesser extent, he's like an animal who's been beaten by humans since it was a baby. You have to carefully earn his trust, and when you do, it's so incredibly sweet and rewarding.

As for him being alpha, I think that's more of the persona he puts out there. Deep down, he's very wounded and could use a hug methinks lol

I have never seen him as being an alpha male. He always let others tell him what to do. He always looks for shelter and protection in others. First, he looks for it in Danarius, then the village who helped him, after Danarius found him, he's back to serve his master and slaughtered the entire village. When he ran away, he found shelter in Hawke and co. If Hawke rejected him, he would just go back to Danarius. He seems wounded, and that could be why he always depends on others. I'm not saying that it's his fault or anything, but he's very codependent in nature. It's very different from Anders who just does whatever hell he wants, left the tower, john the warden, leave the warden, blow up the chantry. Anders, while more affectionate in nature, is the most alpha male in DA2 (Besides Isabela).

all of this is very true.

I also tend to have a dominating personality myself, so the sort of personality fenris has suits me a bit more I guess on that front, minus the damaged person deal.

Oh yeah xD Anders is definitely a take charge kinda guy :D I like to think he keeps my mischievous Hawke's in line a bit xD

Isabela is a woman who also knows what she wants, but I think she's also a bit damaged and could use a strong shoulder to lean on. She needs someone in her life she knows she can depend on.

I... don't really think that Fenris or Anders are "alpha males" in any way. Both use Hawke as an anchor and are starved for acception and love. Fenris ends up wearing the Amell crest as if he was Hawke's property and Anders probably wouldn't have done what he did without Justice's influence.

I don't think there are very many threads devoted to specific characters yet (except Cassandra, for some reason), as no companions have been confirmed for DA3. I'd definitely post in the Cole thread, but I'm afraid it'd get shut down.

Didn't the Cullen thread get locked for that reason?

And I think someone tried to start a thread about Cole, though I don't remember if it was in this forum or the DA2 forum. Anyway, it ended up being sort of an argument about how Cole COULDN'T POSSIBLY BE IN THE GAME EVAR because smehow he's TOTALLY GAME-BREAKING.

It would actually be nice if there were a forum for the books, comics, and movie, because technically they're off topic everywhere, but yeah, until there's some announcement of his involvement in DA3, I'd imagine a Cole thread wouldn't last long.  The Cullen thread at least has a home in the DA2 forum.

As for him being game breaking, he managed to interact with more than one person at a time for a while, even if they started forgetting him after they left his company.  I think it could be really interesting to have him in the party...and it could also be potentially funny.

Personally, though, it's going to be hard to forget what I know about him from Asunder, at least at first, and how he has murdered people who did nothing to him except see him.  I'll give him a chance, but I'll be on the look out for the crazy...

SgtElias: I'd post too. :C

Not sure, I don't follow the Cullen fandom thread[s] really. Wonder why though, at this point with that tweeted picture we basically know he's going to be in the game?  I guess 'cause it's not official? Ah well. Interesting that the Cassandra thread hasn't been locked yet, wonder if that's telling us something.

Re: the last part, oh BSN. I'll try to find that thread though because I'd like to read peoples' opinions.

Syllogi: That would be nice. :[ Sucks because I want to talk about him, so a space for that would be great! Maybe if it was a "What would you think of Cole being in DAIII?" or "Cole for DAIII support" thread rather than a "Cole Fan Discussion" thread... Maybe a group? There seems like a fair bit of interest in him from this thread.

I think having him in the party could be really interesting, yeah, and with what he's done he's all kinds of gray, I can't work out what I think of his actions. xD

Anyway, apologies M/M thread, I just am intrigued by the character of Cole and want to discuss him! But I don't want to derail this thread so as I said, apologies. I'd be totally down with a Cole S/S romance. Not Rhys though, I  rather like Rhys/Evangeline. Posted Image

100% agree with these comments--while I don't see Anders as an alpha male, I see Fenris fitting that archetype even less. I don't think we've ever seen the "alpha male" type in any of our (romanceable) companions... Allistair is also a follower by nature and doesn't contradict the Warden unless s/he is doing something really morally reprehensible. And Zevran certainly doesn't have that sort of personality, either.

Fenris and Anders really seemed dependent on Hawke not only for their own well-being but also for their sanity (Anders outright says this, and Fenris' sanity certainly would have been in danger of losing what was left of his sanity if he had gone back to Danerius after he met Hawke). I would really enjoy seeing a more independent romanceable male who can support the PC and who the PC can lean on, rather than someone whose sanity is dependent on the PC. I guess I don't want an "alpha male" per se, just an independent guy that can be a PARTNER to the PC, with the PC supporting the LI and the LI supporting the PC. Anders and Fenris both had too much outside (and internal) issues going on to provide that function for Hawke, IMO.

This is part of the reason why I really enjoyed Varric in DA2--he was independent, but he was also always there for Hawke and the other companions, and he always projected the attitude that he would go to Hawke if he needed help, but that Hawke could also go to him if s/he needed emotional support.  ...That's not to say that I think we need a Varric clone or that I'm insinuating that I think Varric SHOULD have been romanceable in DA2... I would just like to see a companion with that kind of attitude in the future.

While I really loved the drama of the Anders/Hawke relationship (I was lucky enough to romance him on my first playthrough, before I had any idea what he was going to do with the Chantry), I'd also like to see a healthy relationship that is challenged by OUTSIDE issues rather than the questionable sanity of one or more of the parties involved.
