I felt exactly the same way! When he said he preferred women I was like wtf? Ok... <_< It kind of cheapened the relationship and it felt like, were I female, he would be able to love me more. I still enjoyed the romance and I romance him every time I play DA:O but still, it irks me..
i really don't see why that "cheapens" it? its kind of really disrespectful to bi people (and women to a point although thats just...unfortunate implications i suppose) to say that. so he has a preference, doesn't mean he loves your male warden any less. i'm more partial to guys but that hardly means i'd be less able to love a woman if i dated her. it just means i veer more towards one.
They're not talking about being bi. It's about him mentioning that he prefers women when IN a romance with a male. Like your boyfriend saying he likes redheads the most when you have black hair or something. It just makes you a bit insecure about your OWN hair color, not mad at HIM for liking red heads. I hope that makes more sense?
I'm mixed about it to be honest. most bisexual people do tend to prefer one gender to the other (speaking from experience), so it is actually quite a realistic portrayal, and it doesn't mean he loves a male warden any less than a female one. I don't think it's right to just bluntly tell someone and flirt with the other gender constantly in front of them though. But then again Zevran isn't me and the flirting side did fit his character.
It all comes down to how charcters sexualities define them. On the one hand I liked the fact that the warden's gender didn't change Zevran's preferences and that they were part of his charcter, but on the other hand I can see why some people would be unhappy with having that as their only LI option.
yeah i can see why it bothers people i suppose, i just don't care for the mindset that he shouldn't have a preference or talk about it for fear of making the warden uncomfy. especially since i'm fairly sure you can have that conversation with him while you're still just sort of messing around, before it becomes an actual monogamous-ish relationship. so i guess i just see it as unfair to say he shouldn't say that at all.

I actually consider myself bi and pretty much in the same boat you're in, but let me try to explain. By "cheapen" I didn't mean his character or his sexuality was cheapened, I meant my experience with him. Why would you tell a man you're in a relationship with that you'd prefer to be with a woman? It just seemed oddly placed. He tells stories of how he's slept with many girls and that he even fell for one. He just never struck me as the kind of man who would voluntarily be with another man and is only with my Warden because I chose the right dialogue. Maybe I'm just projecting my own trust issues onto him, though. [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/wizard.png[/smilie] It's also a game, so I shouldn't expect realism in a fantasy world.
He's still my favorite romance out of both DA games. And I'm grateful Bioware gave us the opportunity to pursue a gay romance. Can I ask how it's disrespectful to women? I'm having trouble with that. I meant no disrespect, believe me. I was just offering an opinion. Maybe "cheapens" was the wrong word.
well that's fair enough i guess, i just never interpreted it that way? i interpreted it as just, chatting about sex, and i think it wasn ever intended to come off like he wasn't actually attracted to men so much as just, his past is why he's so open about it. but the lines there came off to some people like something else entirely.
as for telling someone he's in a relationship with, its kind of hard to say because those dialogue options can also happen before you're really in a relationship with him i think? so it might just be a matter of the game's not-so-linear approach to talking to your companions so i tend not to take that bit so seriously. or alternately he's just laid back about talking about what he likes and doesn't really mean anything by it?
oh and the bit about disrespectful to women - that's more an implications thing than anything else and i highly doubt you meant it that way, it can just easily come off as "he likes icky girls getting in the way of my hawt gayz" which is a rhetoric i dont really come acorss too often on here at least so its a stretch. you're fine
