When David says there's a serious transgender character already in DA, I'm now certain it isn't joke character Serendipity.

If it was, he wouldn't of said we'd see "soon enough".

I don't think making an outrageous statement and then giving Bioware an "or else" ultimatum is going get you anything that  you want.

Hmmm. I never got that. I'd be very surprised if it was voiced by a female.

But everyone has their own perceptions. Mine was that Shale and the Warden were surprised that Shale was revealed as  female. Isn't there a conversation option of "And you were female!" or something like that? Don't quote me on that. Just the recollection I have.

Anywho, I think it was a breakthrough moment for transgender constructs everywhere. Leave it to the dwarves to once again break down barriers.

Edit to add re  - Geraldine. Wow, never knew that. Good call. I learned something today.

Also that my hearing tis not what it twas.

Shale knows she is female. She mentions it in passing to the Warden, who then has a "wait, wut?" reaction.

While I understand what the thread desires and find it's a noble goal, this thread isn't going to go anywhere pretty. I've seen enough BSN's "social justice" crowd and those who oppose it to tell this isn't going to go anywhere pretty.

One thing I'd wonder about is how they're going to let the players know that a character is trans.

If a person is trying to pass as a gender, they wouldn't necessarily tell people that they are trans. Would it be a romance only thing? Would the player find out without speaking to the person in person?

I'm a tad wary of when transgender characters are put in games (and etc, though to a somewhat less extent) so far because they are usually one or more of the following:
1. Sex worker. There's nothing wrong with prostitution, or being a sex worker. But transgenderism/etc is NOT about prostitution or just sex.
2. Comic relief, parody, or otherwise a character to laugh at. The struggles that trans people have is played up for laughs.
3. A stereotype. While there's nothing wrong with a trans person sharing attributes with popular stereotypes, that doesn't mean it's wise to always have transgender characters adhere to them, especially when there are so many negative stereotypes.
4. Evil, criminal, villainous, unethical, or something to that effect. This is the other things in the list are common among crossdressing characters to. If they go against gender stereotypes, there's a good chance that a character is going to be evil or something.
5. Miserable, unstable, or "insane." This associates transgenderism is a negative state of mind.

I'd challenge someone to bring up a list (or more than just a few) of trans characters (or even just regularly crossdressing characters) in popular media who aren't one or more of these.

With David Gaider posting in the thread as he did, I feel better about the prospect (for Bioware games), though.

I don't think Bridget from Guilty Gears falls into any of those categories.

I think DA should start cattering to more RL minorities, like maybe vegetarians? Make a companion that is strictly vegetarian, i feel bad that all the squad are frivolous meat devourers.

Then another who maybe is albino? They get little to no representation, but they´re persons too you know? But don´t forget the black guy or girl too, we don´t want to discriminate.

I also want to see some asian companion, i am tired of so much caucasian looking guys on a western rpg, it´s like bioware is ignoring all the glorious ethnic variety on the world to focus on the ethnic make up of their majority customers! (europe and america) What about the ethnic minority customers, don´t they get any love?

I also want a companion that is a smoker, because we smoker face enough discrimination as it is IRL, so please throw us a bone.

You see where this is going. I wish the DA team acted more like a game company, and less like self-proclaimed defenders of minority representation in media.

Still you put up a valid point. Soon the medieval-dark setting of the DA will be full of extreme minorities and thats just a bit silly.

This is very exciting news from David Gaider! My hope is that he means this is a character who has already been created for Dragon Age 3 and will play a legitimate role. I would be pleasantly surprised if it turned out to be a companion character.

First of all I dont give two ****s what people think I am. Secondly, no it's not aceptable in a video game there is no logical reason for it to be there. If we are making the excuse that "they exist in real life so lets put them in a game" then fine lets put child molesters in because they exist too. No ? Why not ?  Who deems that this crap is acceptable but the other is not ? Why is  it acceptable to be offended at one and not the other ? This just shows that for all our "advancements", our moral compass has become non functional.
