This recently popped into my head. How is the character creator going to change, if any, because of the new engine?

Could a Bioware employee chime in and maybe give us a vague statement like "We're hoping to keep it the same as DAO and DA2" or "We're planning on making a few improvments"

Anything would be appreciated really. I'm just very curious, I hope the new engine allows for the same type of character customization, or even better customization. I'd hate to be stuck with an dumbed down version of the character creator or even worse...no character creator at all.

So, what do others think?

I find it hard to imagine there would be no character creation. Both DA:O and DA2 had one. I would guess that DA3 would improve the visuals involved with faces as well as offering a limited increase in options. Think ME2 to ME3. Changes and improvements but nothing revolutionary. That is my guess anyway.

I will have to do some digging, but one of the creators has commented (Twitter maybe?) that they think we'll be pleased with the level of customization. I am excited for that. And hoping for some MC Hammer pants. Maybe just a little. ;)

Hmm would be interesting if you could find that.
That would certainly be nice if they are making improvements too it.

I was just worried their inexperience with the new engine may cause the character creator to be streamlined or something.

I just hope you can see the colour of the eyes, I just started a game and realised my character had pale blue eyes and not green that I chose.

I had that problem with Origins. I just guessed, and it happened, through pure luck, to be the exact color I wanted.

Anyway, I don't think you're going to get a comment, OP, even a vague one. We'll have to wait and see.

I'm not even worried about the level of customization because they've mentioned working hard on that... I just want to know if we'll get some decent lighting on the character creator this time? No dark shadows, no teal or blue tints, no even darker shadows please. It's a pain to get the skin tone right, I don't know how many times I've had to completely redo a character from scratch because I was trying to make them dark tan or olive skin and they came out paper white in game.

Just some simple, even lighting like the ME character creator has would be perf, it lets you see what you're doing without guessing around and gives you exactly what you're going to see in game.

They've mentioned being able to use darker skin tones IIRC, which I guess would transfer into the CC.

Mostly I guess the engine would make things look better rather than actually changing a great deal

A better character creator would have more to do with the consoles than the engine. Things like zoom-ins for eye color selection, smooth transition between facial adjustments, etc all require RAM that the current gen consoles don't really have. You have to stand right in front of your TV to see the details of eye colors. The adjustments to facial features are sluggish and jerky. As graphics get sharper manipulating them with things character creators gets more taxing on the console.

That was part of my worry, due to Bioware saying how graphically superior this game will be...I'm worried it might compromise other systems of the game. Character Creator would be one of the easiest things to cut back on without affecting the core game. I just hope that doesn't happen.

As seen with Mass Effect 3, overall animations suffered. They even removed the holstering animation! All because of consoles. I just hope DA3 CC isn't affected by any console limitations.

Character customization in this fashion is as much a Bioware hallmark as story-telling. I'm looking forward to spending who knows how long in front of it to try and make a self-portrait. Got fairly close with DA2, but the beard resized the jaw and such.

THAT! Is my most despised 'glitch' of the character creator in both games.

Not that I loved the look of the beards to begin with, but regardless I would never use a full beard on any character due to that. It made them look awful.

I'm excited to see if a new engine fixes this problem! I think it will haha

Also, it would be good if you were able to customise your body even a little bit.

Ah that's something I hadn't really thought of. Kind of like Skyrims character creator.

That would add some serious variety! Just a simple slider to adjust if you guy is bigger/smaller in size(not height).

That would definitely be a welcome addition to the character creator.

I'm a console gamer, sorry to be a thorn in your side haha.

I'd like to see the following in DA3:I (Most already mentioned above):
1. Better lighting in CC
2. More hair and beard options
3. Scars (Drag and drop would be nice)
4. No resizing of jaw when adding a beard
5. Black Emporium or similar
6. More tattoos
7. More complexions (With an "intensity slider")

It's not the console gamers that bug me, so don't be sorry! It's just when developers cut features because they cannot find a way to fit it in within console memory limitations.

I'm just worried since it happened with ME3. Hopefully DA dev team is a little more competent.

Anyways, I agree with all your points. Especially the jaw+beard issue.

I think frostbite's most notable effects would be nerve damage and gangrene.

I wouldn`t bet on the game actually having a character generator, actually. Racial choice got removed in the last game, so did any impact of your choice in gender, non combat skills are also gone. I am guessing the character generator or stats are the next to go.

Next thing you know they'll stop making video games altogether and become "The Bioware Maple Syrup Concern, Edmonton Headquarters".
