More like the "tried very hard to be sad hammer" we keep getting told how sad and depressing the setting is but it only felt that way on occasion, to me anyways.

Case and point Thessia.

It's too much manipulative: kids being killed, sad piano music, nightmares, traumatized Shepard... I love dark atmospheres (Deus Ex, Witcher or Bioshock) but ME3 felt... too much forced. Actually I almost felt insulted. As I read somewhere in these forums, the game is a huge "this is a child. He's dead. Feel sad. I SAID FEEL SAD!!!"[/quote]

Yeah there wasn't enough element to player reactivity as to how they wanted to react to the events unfolding. Too much attempt to force stuff on a player characterised protaganist.

I loved it.

Emotional games are always the best, it gets ya talking even when the game has ended.
ME3 trirlogy has done a superb job in delivering its war story on the reapers. Yeah it was sad to see entire hammer get decimated, but its part of the sacrafice they made to help make a difference of hope.

I was..... am dissapointed with the ending on ME3, but its still a brilliant game & the ending only wanted me to have more on shepards story. I was more hoping of a conclusive ending, but never got that vibe from any of the choices. Its the main reason why i dis-liked the way they wraped it up.

I love War games that gets emotional, it gives you an adrenaline pump when playing it.

They built hope with Tuchanka, Rannoch, the miracle on Palaven, and then began the process of crushing it on Thessia, then curb stomped it out of you on Earth.

I wanted to yell at the writers for weeks.

Of course they went totally overboard. Having one or two endings that are sad is perfectly fine, but if every ending in the game is not just sad, but borderline depressing, you've went too far.

Has it occured to you that that was the intention?

It's odd, because the game tells me to be sad. Yet most of the time I'm not sad, at least with the overall Reaper War plot. There was a failure in execution somewhere.

More like a sadness hammer that was inflatable and squeaked when it hit something.

It's a war, there is sadness, soul shattering truths, and the likes that come with it. Yes there is moments of joy here and there, but its still a war in the end. The story and the feeling was a good fit. Just my two cents and opinion.

To answer this I'll go by a case-by-case point.

Joker's sister story = Appropriate.
Mordin's death = Appropriate.
Grunt's death/near-death = Appropriate.
Casualties on Earth = Appropriate.
Fall of Thessia = Appropriate.
Other squadmate stories = Appropriate.
Victus' Son = Appropriate.

Ending= Overboard.
The Kid= Overboard.
Legion's death = Overboard.
Samara's death = Overboard.

From this it might seem that they got most of it right. However, the feelings towards the kid is a continual thing through-out the game. And the ending is a major part of not only the game but the entire trilogy. They shouldn't have tried to force anything there. Just bring it down for a safe landing.

I especially loved that line. Thessia's fall can most defintely be attributed to Shepard. How could he not stop the Reaper horde? Worthless, worthless spectre.

Overboard. No question. No way anyone finished this game in a happy, elated mood.

It didn't feel forced at all to me... Personally, I think it was done very well.

I'd agree with most of this, except for Earth and Thessia.

In neither case are we given in-universe experience of these locations beforehand so that we can really feel for them when they fall. I only ever saw Earth for five minutes before I was whisked away, and never saw Thessia before it was on fire. Considering how important they are to the setting and how shocking it is meant to be to see them fall, we don't have enough connection, in spite of all the 'feel sad nao!' stuff that gets flung at us.

Would have been far more effective to let us go to these places before they fell, then seeing them in ashes as they fall would have an actual impact.

Example: In KOTOR, Dantooine. We spend a good portion of the game on this peaceful planet. Then, near to the end, we find out its been razed to the ground, and we cannot return. Then in KOTOR2 we go back, and see how royally ruined it is. Knowing wwhat we know about the place makes this a personal, impactful loss.

It's too poorly used. "Feel about this kid! Boom! Now he's dead! FEEL!" That's a horrible misuse of pathos.

. I hate the aftermath of Thessia with such a burning passion.  The only saving grace is the option to shut Liara down hard.

@ both

Liberal uses of the "X" button gets me through, barely..... I sometimes skip Joker's conversation, but I do like the little bit of characterization.
