Just want to know what are the prereqs for getting into the Alienage.  I'm assuming completing X amount of quests or particular plot events, but specifics would be helpful.

Get as far as Landsmeet, after that you can get in.

Edit: Rats! That looks ambiguous. Do Landsmeet. Then you go to the Alienage.

You're right, so much happens then. It's all a jumble in my head, lol. But that's what you gotta do - get that far - have all your allies, go meet Eamon and so forth, Landsmeet is called. Yes?

It's between Anora and the Landsmeet so you can get the slavers evidence against Loghain in the Alienage that you can bring up in the Landsmeet. I think it opens after you speak with Anora after you rescue her and are back at Arl Eamon's Estate, IIRC.

This. When you meet with Anora and Eamon at Eamon's Denerim pad, you're told there is unrest in the Alienage by Anora. At that point the Alienage is open.

I should have initially mentioned that the Royal Palace, the Arls Estate, Fort Drakon and of course the Alienage is all greyed out to me.

Ahh, I have yet to meet Anora and Eamon. 

It seems to me a matter of completing plots quests, but the out of the quests I have corrently, the ones I think may be plot events require me to get to places I cannot get into yet. 

I don't mind spoilers when I'm stuck

You have to have completed all the treaty quests, saved Arl Aemon with the Urn of sacred ashes and travelled with him to his Denerim estate. Then in his estate you must talk to him and the pretty young elf beside him. This will open up the rescue Anora quest. Once you have resolved her difficulties and have managed to make your way back to the Arl of Denerim's estate, a conversation with Anora will unlock the alienage.
