Hello,

I am playing Baldurs Gate for the first time. I am relatively new to RPGs compared to many of you. I began in late 2008 with Mass Effect 1, followed with Knights of the Old Republic I, and have continued playing many modern and old RPGs since. Older RPGs I have played include Fallout, Fallout 2, and Planescape: Torment. I am finally hoping to get around playing the Baldurs Gate series.

I am the type that likes to play my games modded (if they have good mods by the time I play them) straight from the beginning. I do not play singleplayer games a second time. I have tried and never have succeeded in maintaining interest for very long into a second playthrough. Once I finish a singleplayer game, that is it for me. So I really like to play the "fixed up / enhanced" version of the game my first (and last) time around. This is especially true for old games in which it is difficult for me to get past that initial "vintage-shock" with the old game rules, old interface/UI, and old gameplay mechanics - it is not the graphics / audio that bother me. I had to try playing Fallout twice before finally getting into a playthrough. It took three times for Planescape, but once I got past the initial vintage-shock, I loved both.

So it seems to me the easiest way to get the most fixed-up / enhanced version of the game is with the latest version of the Big World Setup exe. I hate manually installing tons of mods. I have tried that with a couple of games, Oblivion and Fallout 3, and I will never do the mass-manual modding again.

However, the pre-prepared compilations are not what I am looking for. The Minimal/Minimum version of the Big World Project barely includes anything. The Recommended version includes lots of additional content and changes that seem to change the nature of the game. The "Total Happiness" version seems to do a lot less than it claims (it does not include many performance mods, fixes, etc...). The "Total Happiness Plus" version adds too much, just like the Recommended version.

It seems to get what I am looking for, I am going to need to pick a base version that is closest to what I want and then select/deselect specific mods. However, as a newcomer, I definitely need some guidance if any of you are willing to give any. The following is what I am looking for (if you think I forgot something that I might be looking for, feel free to mention it and explain your recommendation).

What I DO want:
1. Stability Improvement
2. Performance Improvement
3. Fixes
4. Balance Improvement
5. Increased "Smoothness" (smoothing out the rough edges and/or vintage problems to appeal more to a newcomer and modern gamer)
6. Visual / Audio Quality Improvement
7. Interface / UI Improvement
8. Restored / Completed Content (that should have been in the game if not for real-life interference or obstacles...content that was planned, intended, or desired by developers)

What I do NOT want:
1. Mods that make the areas in the above list worse.
2. Content for content's sake (even if high quality).
3. Increased difficulty.

If someone has the time, could you perhaps download the latest Big World Setup ( http://dabus.bplaced.net/BWP/bws.php ), load it up, check out the versions and available mods, and recommend how I should proceed? I am sure this will be helpful to others in the future as well - I am not sure why such a version as I am looking for is not already offered. As I said, the "Total Happiness" description is very close, but its description completely mismatches its configuration.

Thank you.

P.S.
I know there are "gray area" mods that may or may not fit into what I do or do not want - feel free to mention them too.

It sounds to me like you would be better off having a restricted list of mods. Most mods that change things like graphics and UI don't have universal appeal and if you're only going to play through once then why change from the original version.

From those mods I am familiar with I would suggest:
EasyTutu or BGT (uses the BG2 engine to play BG1 - that's required for most mods).
BG2 Fixpack - fixes a lot of (mainly minor) errors.
BG1 Unfinished Business - restored content for BG1.
Unfinished Business - restored content for BG2.
Generalised Biffing - may help with game speed when large numbers of enemies spawn.
Widescreen - allows you to choose the resolution you want to play the game at.

Yup I would also not suggest the BWP. I tried it once, and it is a truly astonishing piece of work, but the resulting game was not really what I wanted to play. The gear you can get is really overpowered, while the enemies are not improved enough, making it tediously easy.

Grond's list is pretty good. I prefer BG trilogy to easytutu, but both are really good.

I assume you have both BG1 & BG2, with both expansions? Install all four, and apply the official ToB patch to BG2. Install the BG2 fixpack. Install BG trilogy. This is your core install, and BG1 & BG2 can now be played as one seamless game, using the BG2 engine.

Unfinished business 1 & 2 will give you restored content, cool.
Widescreen is cool, although I'm quite happy using the unsupported vanilla 1024x768.
The BG2 tweak pack goes last, and gives you ease of use cheats, like larger ammo stacks.

Agree with the above. I've used BWP a few times (usually deselecting parts of the recommended list). Also be aware it defaults which parts of what mods are installed too, so where I would want one part of a mod (e.g. disable animation on a cloak) I'd get the entire mod. By the time you've edited a batch file to do what you want you may as well have done it yourself (unless you are happy with their defaults and heavily mod the game).

I would suggest looking at the 1pp mod for slightly changed visuals, also Infinity Animations mod.

The BG1 NPC mod may not neatly fit your criteria but it adds banter between party members in a similar way to that of BG2. As you're not familiar with either, it would take the banter from KOTOR/Mass Effect levels towards PS:T levels.

& don't install to the default directory. Somewhere like c:\\games will work far better otherwise config and save files get "managed" by Vista or more recent versions of Windows.

As for install order, BWP is the best resource for that. So work out which mods you want, fire up BWP, work out the order then go do it yourself.

If you do decide to install BWP I found it needed the BG2 installation to have the correct final folder, e.g. c:\\games\\BGII - SoA or whatever it was called.
