I might also add to my previous list of things I would avoid in a SCS2 install->Beholders with Burn Through

I run with Smarter Beholder, but I skipped the "burn through" option: It sounds un-fun in No Reload play...

At one point in the fight 5 out of 6 party members couldn't cast magic due to ''Anti-Magic Ray'

I haven't tried the PnP anti-magic ray, but the vanilla one can be foiled with Spell Shield.

''Un-fun'' sounds about right.
Also, I haven't used PnP anti-magic ray in this run and you're correct, the vanilla version can be stopped by Spell Shield.
I am pretty sure that the miscast magic penalty for several rounds still applies, whether you had Spell Shield on or not.

Keep in mind, numerous of my characters had a defence of SS,II,SI:A/SI:D,MGoI,ST/SD and a few general buff spells such as resist fear running.
This will last for about 1 round on a targeted character.

It's not anti-magic ray which breaches that defence, but regular Beholder/Elder Orb Rays with ''burn through''.
Burn through doesn't mean some rays will bypass your defence, it means each ray has about a 30% chance to dispel your defence.
On top of this they'll also apply miscast magic on that character, which makes them completely defenceless bar scrolls and other consumables.

How many eyestalks does a Beholder go through in each round?5-6?
How often do you fight a single Beholder, especially with better calls for help?

All of this is rather meaningless though, as most regular Beholders can be taken out rather quickly, especially since blindness stops them from using any of their eyestalks until dispelled.

It just gets tough once you fight numerous of them at once or a group of an Elder Orb with regular ones.
Elder Orbs have magic resistance and regular spells such as ST and PfMW on top of all their Beholder abilities, which they also get to use each round on top of their regular spells (iirc).

Breaching them is a waste of time, unless you can shut down their regular spellcasting.
Blindness they counter with True Sight, while all of your characters spell protections get removed.
Everybody who even dares to target them or cast spells in their territory will get shut down with anti-magic ray.

It's not impossible to take them down without cheese, but for creatures that only give you 14000 EXP, the threat they pose is completely unproportional to the amount of EXP they're worth with those settings in place.

I did come up with numerous counters against them and if you don't care about chesse, 3 Skeleton Warriors and 2 Haekehsar, who target the Elder Orb, will win the fight for you.

Right. It foils the Anti-Magic Ray without being dispelled itself and in turn protects your other buffs. That can allow arcane casters to fight them in complete safely..

Some consider this a bug. I'm inclined to let my arcane casters use it though since I find it more satisying than the alternatives (mugging them with summons for example).

I am pretty sure that the miscast magic penalty for several rounds still applies, whether you had Spell Shield on or not.

It may work that way in your setup- I can't say for certain of course. In my install it doesn't: Spell Shield foils the Anti-Magic Ray altogether- no dispel, no casting failure. In combination with the right buffs it trivializes them.

It's not anti-magic ray which breaches that defence, but regular Beholder/Elder Orb Rays with ''burn through''.

Understood. Good luck with that: I have zero interest in using the burn through option...:P

Anyhoo. Best of luck with your run!

No, you're right, I just tested to make sure.
Anti-Magic Ray does not apply a penalty when your character was protected by Spell Shield.
The defences usually ''burn down'' so quickly that it's hard to say, in my install that is.

If I only knew all of this prior to installing those particular components........
Well, I hope some people lurking/reading will profit from this, when they're asking themselves if they want Beholders with burn through and Vanilla Anti-Magic Ray.

I wouldn't advise it, unless you like your Baldurs Gate 2 with lots of reloads.
