So after doing some research i decided to go back to solider
I realized my main issue with my previous Insanity run was i was a wee bit too fragile, mainly because i went with something else as my bonus power (Geth Shield Boost wouldn't make me unkillable but it would give me a tad bit more leeway, especially since it stays in effect while Adrenaline Rush is in use)
Has anyone ever tried this before and do they have any suggestions?
Shield Boost as my bonus power, likely would use Miranda to do with shields/armor and Grunt just as a meat shield/tank

If you are worried about fragility, then Sentinel may be more up your alley. Tech Armor has a 12 second cooldown as well, but evolving your passive to Guardian (+30% cooldown) and researching the Tech Cooldown upgrade (+20% cooldown) will get Tech Armor cooldown to 6 seconds. It will also detonate when your shields go down, staggering most enemies in its radius. Evolve it to Assault Armor and it will also give you shields back.
The biggest problem with Geth Shield Boost on an Infiltrator and especially Soldier, is that you effectively taking cooldowns away from your best abilities. Soldier has one really good power (Adrenaline Rush) that has a 3-second cooldown starting at rank 3. So for Soldier bonus powers, you want a cooldown that will not interfere too much with that cooldown. Neural Shock (3 seconds) and Slam (3 seconds) are excellent bonus powers and are considered "1-point wonders", namely that they do their job well at 1 point.
As a Soldier, you are actually better at staying alive using just Adrenaline Rush since you are getting hit less when it is active. You can also evolve it to Hardened Adrenaline Rush so you take 50% less health damage.
Grunt sucks.
Miranda is a good all-round squadmate, and her passive can boost your health and/or weapon damage.
All the SMGs are awesome. Shuriken and Tempest have a 1.5x damage multiplier to shields, 2x damage multiplier with the SMG Shield Damage upgrade. You can also use them as a shotgun substitute early game if you want. It is a shame that the Soldier cannot use them.
If you are really having trouble and have the weapons DLC, then consider using the Mattock. That gun is completely broken under Adrenaline Rush.

I decided to embark on my attempt to beat ME2 on insanity with an infiltrator. I was told to go with Geth Shield Boost as my bonus power, i didn't care for Infiltrator mainly because of my inability to do anything worth value with SMG's

IMO Geth Shield Boost is a bad idea on an Infiltrator. It locks you out of Cloak for too long, and Cloaking is a far better defense than GSB. My preferred bonus powers for Infiltrator are Neural Shock, AP Ammo, or Warp Ammo. Energy Drain is pretty good too.
Both SMGs have a little bit of a learning curve but they're great weapons. Snipers are good too (especially the Viper) and a lot of people had good luck with shotgun builds.
For Soldiers, I just used Hardened ARush for defense and it was plenty. Here again, GSB locks you out of your best power for too long, and there's rarely any times when using another power is better for the Soldier than ARushing.
Miranda is always one of my go-to squaddies, she's good for every mission against any opponent. Grunt is not that great for a Soldier but is, ironically, great for an Infiltrator. When you cloak, enemies focus on your team and Grunt can take the beating better than anyone else.
Garrus is great on shield/synthetic heavy missions. Samara or Thane work really well on Collector missions. Mordin is for missions vs. Bloodpack that have lots of armor. Along with Miranda, those are my most-used teammates with a Soldier.

You start with Mantis, Shuriken and Predator, but are a character that is biased to sniper rifles. The main issue early game with this loadout is that the Mantis is way too ammo limited. It doesn't even benefit from off-hand ammo pack. I don't know what exactly they were thinking when they gave it less ammo than the Widow. So you aren't going to be relying on it to get all your kills in a mission. It barely lasts a single engagement within a level.
Predator is decent all around and you might find yourself using it during The Professor when you are out of Mantis ammo. If you take the Carnifex halfway through, you will do more damage per shot, but ammo will again be a problem. So that is something to consider. I think there is good argument to be made for running the Predator until you get the Locust, or longer if you prefer the Shuriken.
Shuriken is a decent CQB gun, the only problem is that you are not very durable early game. After some upgrades the Shuriken will turn into an excellent CQB weapon, but that doesn't really help you early when you are forced to rely on it. By Horizon it will be better a little better.
There are two things that you can do to make your life easier as an early game infiltrator. First would be to make sure that you invest at least one point in Incinerate as soon as possible. It is at least as valuable as Tactical Cloak early game as it provides damage and CC. And it is very useful on The Professor and Archangel to deal with the Blood Pack and armor. You may even find you use it more than Tac Cloak early, and that is fine.
As above, I would recommend a "one point wonder" bonus power. Those three are Stasis, Slam and Neural Shock. Stasis is of course only available if you have LOTSB, and is the most powerful because of an exploit (enemies briefly become "neutral" when it wears off and take extra damage). Slam and Neural Shock both offer rapid CC and fast cooldown. I prefer Neural Shock, as it fits with the infiltrator tech proficiency. Does it have some overlap with Incinerate? Yes, both provide CC to organics. However, unlike Incinerate it is instacast and the cooldown is faster (3s vs 6s). So if you need CC now it is a little better. You can cast NS and then when CD wears off go into Incinerate for a decent stun, then damage combo.
Many would probably recommend playing Stealing Memory either second or third so you can get the Locust SMG, if you have that DLC. Not a bad option. It is a better all around weapon with a lot of ammo compared with most of your other ones early game.
After you get yourself leveled up a bit you will be set though. If you do Archangel second, it will likely be the toughest mission until potentially Horizon. After that you should be ok. DCC might be a little tricky depending on when you play it.
One final thought. Don't take the defensive powers on any character for Insanity in ME2. They just have way too long of cooldowns to be practical.

If you are worried about what squadmates to bring, then just being anybody. I find that if you manage them well, any squaddie will be "a great addition to the team," as Jacob would say - but if you don't manage them, then it really doesn't matter since you're pretty much just going to solo it all with a bit of random help. Oh, and Grunt doesn't suck, he can charge Sions. Like a boss.
Unless you are super familiar with the game, you generally tend to play every class as a basic soldier for the first few levels. Lots of shooting, few powers here and there. Eventually, you get to the point where your class definition starts to shine through - so don't worry too much about trying to play to a certain style from the get-go. Just get in there and shoot.
You'll also die a lot. My first insanity run was with a Vanguard and I died so freaking much it wasn't funny. By the middle of it though, I started to get a grasp on how much damage I could take, and how much I could dish out. By the end, I was Charging like crazy. That said, don't get down because you die a few times here and there. Pre-Horizon Shep is nothing to sneeze at, it takes a bit for him/her to come into his/her own and also a bit of time for you to get comfortable in his/her shoes.

The Viper is one of the best standard guns in the game though, and will supplement a shotgun infiltrator well.J4mes wrote...
The thing is, the Infiltrator really benefits from taking Shotgun Specialization from the Collector Ship. But that means you will never get the Widow.

Yeah, but if you already have played a Vanguard/Soldier, you already probably a bunch with a Shotgun already.
In ME3 Infiltrator Shotgunnning is much better though.

The Locust is good, but I would not say it is far superior to the other SMGs. The Tempest is still my favorite SMG, and the Shuriken is a vastly underrated SMG.TheSovietPenguin wrote...
I would recommend getting the Kasumi DLC for an SMG Infiltrator, since the SMG you get from it is far superior to the vanilla ones, and gives a much-needed buff to any SMG user.
