Now for my thoughts:

Alistiar – 291. Fan fiction: I hear the wiminfolk like it.

Alistiar is a ridiculously popular when it comes to writing, but it's not quite what you think. There's a group of Alistiar fangirls who run weekly fiction contests and produce the short story equivalent of blowing your nose. We're talking 300 word snippets where Alistiar gets drunk and Zevran convinces him to 'practice' kissing.

Still though, the dude has twice as many stories as the most popular *origin* and four times as many as the closest love interest: Zevran.

The most popular origin would be Ser Cousland. This isn’t surprising, humans tends to be the most popular raise in RPGs, and if you want to be king or queen, this is the origin to pick.

Shockingly, CULLEN, that one dude from the Mage origin who goes insane later on is as popular as one of the love interests and more popular than any of the regular companions. I guess when Alistiar kicks all those mage gals to the curb, Cullen is there for a rebound.

No, it means more girls write fanfic than dudes.

The question now becomes, does an author create another Alistiar/Cousland fic, or try for one of the less popular origins and love interests?

Erm, I suppose you could also write a non-romantic fiction. I mean, you could have your work ignored while someone's 1,000 word 'Alistiar blushes and says something snarky/cute' fic garners a dozen glowing reviews.

That would be fun. Posted Image

Interesting stats. :)

But I confess, I didn't decide to write about Zevran because I was playing the numbers.  I mean, I wasn't expecting to write anything at all, having never written any fanfic before, so it was a bit of a surprise to me, if I'm honest.  The stories I've written just popped  into my head because I like Zev's character I suppose and he caught my imagination.  I guess that's what the Alistair lassies are doing, they like him LOTS so they want to write about him.   At least it's from the heart, bless 'em.

And to be honest, ff.net is so bloody ginormous, worrying about the competition seems a bit of an up-hill struggle.  I put my thingies there because I hoped someone would see what I've written and the kind people on these boards suggested that was a good place.

Interested to see who you decide upon!

Shockingly few for Teagan. Otherwise pretty much expected, the general Human>Elf>Dwarf hierarchy.

And Cullen is so high because of sparkly vampires.

The stats don't really surprise me. :) Too bad we can't cull the 300 word fanfics out of the tally, though. Some might be good, but c'mon...a snippet of giggle/swoon/snark? Ehh...

From my point of view, stats don't concern me *that* much. They're nice, yes, but I write because I like to write, and I post my work in the belief that someone out there will read it and enjoy it. And maybe build be a temple and send me cake.

I picked Alistair because I love him. :D He's not even in the story yet though, save as a plot point. Zevran and Dog are the only two with my Cousland, Dog because it's *Dog*, and Zevran because he was the only party companion who wanted to stick around post-coronation and it makes an interesting party mix for the story I have in mind.

Wow!! They do that?  It was a possibility I hadn't even considered! When does that happen? :)

Quite right too I think :)

Alistiar is very sweet and lovable. It's not surprising he's the 'fan favorite' at all.

At the same time... I always feel bad for all those companions, origins, and love interests with hardly any stories. It's not rational, but I do. Don't they deserve love? Posted Image

I mean, look at poor Leliana. She has the same number of fics as a guy in the mage origin who speaks all of five lines in the entire game!

They are either too short or one does not write FF about sex with the knife ears?

And yes, the Teagan is a shocker.

@Tarante

I've written FF on Bioware blogs. Never went near FF...

As a 40 year old male - I expect to be blackmailed about it someday :)

Eek, I do both - is that wrong?  And yes, as a 40 year old woman, I feel a tad uncomfy and ashamed about indulging my inner adolescent.  But I am safe in the knowledge that no one I know would ever dream of going within a thousand clicks of ff.net, so hopefully, no one will find out. :bandit:

Anyway, bravo for you, and who gives a flying…

(I’m going to read your stories now.) :)

Sadly, only in my dreams. Sometimes I cry myself to sleep about it.  ;)

I know what you mean. I suppose it depends on what the story is about (preseming half of the ones on FF have actual plots) or when it's set. It'd be neat to see something like a Sten story about him travelling home, though. Or someone's rendition of Wynne and Shale going to Tevinter.

...it's almost midnight and I'm getting ideas. I hate it when this happens.

Well, since almost all fics have a large romance component, and these fics are written mostly by women, and most women are more interested in guys, that makes sense.  She does appear to be a popular supporting character, though.

Be subversive!  Write a Leliana romance!  If I ever get around to romancing Leliana I could do this, but Zevran presents an obstacle to Leliana's happiness.

And I would like to additionally be subversive by writing a fic where Cullen is the creepy stalker bigot I think he is.

Meh, I have one story on FF.net and that's with an account I used once and abandoned.  The only reason I post fanfiction online is because I can't ever profit from it, so there's no need to attach my real name to it, and also no need to achieve perfection!  I write original fiction for fun but only a few people have ever seen it (not good/complete enough to publish).  So when I write fanfiction, I write it for fun, post it, and eventually ignore it.  I can't see that I'll ever have an account at ff.net that I use regularly.

The key reason I want to write fanfiction for this game is because there's enough characterization to make it really interesting, but so much seems to be missing.  You get no response from most of the characters to major events in the game.  Unfortunately pretty much no one on ff.net seems to write for this reason--they're just getting Alistair into bed with their female Cousland/male Cousland/Zevran/other PC.  Yes, I've been working on getting my character into bed with Zevran for dozens of pages now (I feel like I'm working on it harder than Zevran is ) but hopefully am also filling in some blanks in the story.

Fan Fiction is fun. I feel a bit dork-tastic for writing it myself, but I do have fun with it.

There's just a lot of good stuff in Dragon Age, which means there's a lot of good stuff to write about. All the conflict, violence, romance, you know. . . .

I also write about Alistair. But also Loghain, who's not even on the list. So make of that what you will.

I'm surprised there's not more Anora, to be honest. She's smokin'.

I might go for it after I finish my Aeducan fic. Yes, I'm on there. :P

Heh, this turns me off to publishing the fanfiction I've been writing. I had no idea Alistair was that popular.

As you said, most people who write fanfiction are female.

Ergo, most would choose a romance with a male.

And thus Alistair is the more popular choice.

As to why he's SO much more popular, well... that's a mystery for others to solve.

Don't let stats turn you off from writing.  Write because you feel you need to write!  Ultimately you're writing the fanfic for yourself.  I haven't tried my hand at DA fanfiction yet, but I write a lot of other stuff, mostly OC in cannon worlds.

I've been tossing around the idea of writing an Alistair/PC fic.  It would be after the dark ritual.  Probably something that's been done a million and one times...but I feel unsatisfied by the lack of address the game gives this scene.  I'd LOVE to be part of that conversation.

Other scenes I might write out, just for grins:

-In Andraste's Temple...they all get naked and walk through the fire and nobody has anything to say.

-In Fort Drakkan (sp?) When you and Alistair get captured.  There's got to be some great story points there, especially if PC is romantically involved with him.  As awesome as, "Oh. Help. My friend is dying. *shifty eyes* "  Is...there's a fanart picture out there that's inspired me to quite a bit more.

I have been utterly shocked at the lack of Teagan fics, as well. As many of YOU people know, I'm the biggest Teagan fangirl out there, so it was entirely natural for me to base my fic around him as the male lead.

Of the 6 you can find on ff.net, only two of them, I think, are actual longer fics that ship the PC/Teagan. Though to be perfectly honest, I had a hard time imagining a scenario where my PC would get with Teagan when Alistair was still around (yes, I <3 Ali)

Personally, I love Alistair, I think he is a brilliant character. Which is why I shied away from trying to write him, actually. I felt like I would do him a disservice, and it's much easier to write original (or semi-original) characters, at least for me. I wouldn't want to insult David Gaider by utterly butchering his...well..his coup de grace, so to speak. I think Alistair is one of the best characters he's written, and who am I to go in and muck with it? Some schlub on the internet with too much time on her hands.

Fortunately, one of the endings of the game provided me with a great opportunity to not only write a Teagan fic, but do it in a way that hopefully goes a little bit deeper than the typical "PC and Male!Lead fall into the sack after two chapters of witty banter" story. While that type might garner more reviews on ff.net, It's not the story that is clawing its way out of my head.

And last but not least, Shavon, like Jules said, don't let it turn you off. Write for you, it's what I'm doing. I'm writing my fic for practice and experience in dialogue and characterization. If people like it, great. If not, well, fine, I just hope they'd tell me why in a constructive and helpful manner.
