We just watched "G-Force." Quite amusing, especially with grown-up action movie references thrown in...

As for bad boys versus goofy boys... Yeah, very torn between the two. I'm spoiled in real life. Hubby is both rolled into one. Mmmm.

I agree, "bad boys" can be interesting in a game or movie but it RL- no way.  I do have to confess that my DA:O characters are torn between Alistair and Zevran.

And even in movies, I still tend to like the awkward types more. I dunno why, I just find it more endearing. Perhaps because their imperfection makes them more human? Well, probably that and I was raised by a rather goofy father, and they say women are often attracted to men that are either a lot like their fathers, or completely opposite.

I play male characters far more often than females, and I've remade my Amell (my avatar here) four times now - I can't seem to get away from the Leliana romance myself, ha! Zeveran's is the only one I haven't finished because I haven't gotten back to my female Tabris playthrough just yet. What little I have seen of it is good, though. Alistair's was nice, but... Dunno, I just enjoy games/romances more when I'm not playing my own gender, so I rarely see the romances other fangirls gush about.

And Cullen is so high because of sparkly vampires.

This has such a potentially overwhelming truth to it.

I can't help but shake my head.

If I were to write a fanfic, I'd probably include Jowan, of all people.

I dunno...Cullen's sweetness factor dropped dramatically when he confessed to my mage that he was the one that would have killed her at her Harrowing...and he wasn't like "I don't know what I would've done!" he was like "I totally would have done it, too." But then, I always imagined my mage PC (who is my canon pc) would have a deep abiding hatred of the Templars. I was seriously disappointed that, upon returning for the Circle of Magi quest, one of my options wasn't to go ballistic and roast anything and everything in a tin suit for even considering that whole Rite of Annulment thing.

One last thing is that in the beginning I don't think Cullen was fighting against any personal belief that mages are dirty or evil as he makes it clear he doesn't think that they are even though he has (I assume) been taught that he *should* think that way. He's seen with his own eyes and who is he gonna believe, the young sweet thing he is: the Chantry or his lyin' eyes? Rather, he's fighting against the vows of celibacy he surely must've taken as well as the line of professional distance (for lack of a better term) he must keep in order to be able to do his job. Its simply not appropriate for Templars to fraternize with mages and for obvious reasons. Though I simply can't believe that the Templars and mages *never* "canoodle" with each other. Simply impossible. I'm sure if Cullen listened around he'd find more of his brothers than he'd care to admit have...indulged. Plus, the poor fem!mages! I mean compare dingy male!mage robes to the awesomely masculine Templar armor -- mage robes lose every time. Plus there is the whole forbidden fruit tastes sweeter thing...and discovering what the Templars wear (or not) under their skirts....

That's one way to see it, except that the writer who wrote him (Sheryl Chee) said earlier in this very thread that he does belief mages are dirty and evil, and that he's wrong for having feelings for the Fem PC.  Her words were, in fact:

Yes, there's nothing romantic about the scenario in my mind. I imagine
it would be very quick, very violent, and only undertaken as a way to
get her out of his system.

BUT, that being said, fan fiction is a way to play with the characters in a way YOU want, and I realize there's a rather large and happy Cullen fan base :)

The goofy ones are the most devious bad boys that exist. They make you think they're nice, and then BAM, you'd tidying up for them, cooking, cleaning, and being a good wife.

They're the ones to look out for *nods*

I tidy up/cook for nobody, not even myself. Ask my last boyfriend. Actually, come to think of it... I always managed to get him to clean up stuff without really asking. Fear the power of boobs, I suppose.

Its so neat how everyone can fill in the blanks for their characters. In contrast to yours, my mage liked the Templars. The only life she rememebered was of the Tower and the Templars were always there. She didn't misbehave so for her the Templars stood as silent guardian statues, becoming part of the masonry and moving far out of her mind for the most part. As she moved through Tower those Templars she did speak with were generally kind and tolerant. I suppose it is mutually beneficial for the mages and Templars to have a cordial/borderline friendly relationship as mistrust brought on by abuse would only cause extreme problems (more Uldreds, for example, and much more frequently). And of course Cullen was especially nice to her, which reinforced her beliefs that the Templars were "good people" for the most part.

I agree...my favorite part of reading fanfic is seeing how different people have interpreted different situations from the game.  I've had people turn my entire view of a character upside down with a good story, and I've never been able to think of them the same way again.

For what it's worth, and because it's the Community Creations forum, I'll pimp my one-off elf Mage PC's background story, which explains why I went the other route with my mage.  I might have played it differently if she'd been human. Maybe.

Just found the forum and the discussion and hope you will all forgive me for jumping in so late--

In no particular order:

1. Eastern NC BBQ-- is there any other kind?

2. Have been frantically writing fanfic since I finished my first playthrough in early December and completely agree with what others said about the power of fic to unlock the creative writer you have been keeping carefully submerged in your real life.

3. Woke my husband up as I laughed myself silly over Mary and Sheryl's Sten interviews. An unexpected delight, as I have never been on a forum for any fandom where the writers actually pop in to offer their perspectives.

4. Will confess to just adoring _Twilight_ for the splendid trash that it is, That said, I do see one of those strange unanticipated connections between Twilight's Edward and DAO Cullen-- in that both characters struggle with wanting to "love" what they should only want to destroy. Frankly, I think DAO sets it up better in about ten seconds of unanticipated dialogue than Twilight did over ~2000 pages, but that could be why I am typing away on this forum...

5. As far as Cullen as broken and wrong or misunderstood sweetie trapped in an evil system, I think he's interesting because there actually is a little of both going on... perhaps, in a different, far less interesting universe, Cullen would have married a nice gal next door-- but fate landed him in the Templars and that, I would argue, is why it is broken and wrong. Part of Templar training is a strong knowledge of history, namely, the post-Imperium history where mages are terrifying. Another part of Templar training is vigilance. So good templars are supposed to watch mages, carefully. Good Templars are also supposed to keep in mind all the beastly things a mage can become. Good Templars also take vows of chastity. That's a potent combination. I don't think Cullen would have been a freaky stalker if he were Mr. Cullen of Eastreach farm, able to snuggle with his willing bride after a hard day's work on his pumpkin patch-- but after traning that basically turns you into a freaky stalker, I actually agree that if he were to give into femmage it probably would be much as Sheryl described. Now if Cullen and femmage were to run away from the Circle Tower and there was time for both of them to overcome their programming? Possibly the sweetie could re-emerge. Worked for Alistair, at least a bit-- although he neither took vows, nor had the lyrium addiction to contend with.

6. As far as liking/not liking the bad boy-- part of it for me has to do with my origin. To be frank, were I in the DAO universe I probably would have fallen for Sten-- but my little tormented innocent City Elf Rogue fell for Alistair like nobody's business. I wonder how many of these preferences (to return to those original stats) have to do with good role playing-- embracing who your character is and what he or she finds attractive-- rather than who you are and who you find attactive? .

PC: Oh baby that feels so good
Sten: grunt
PC: oh gawd yes right there
Sten: ...yes
PC: do you like that baby?
Sten: no, the orgasm is a lie

Really =/ just no.

I never got the impression that Sheryl didn't like any of the stuff the fans make. Unless of course it deals with Harry Potter and the doubious subject of mpreg. Or at least that it what I have read in the tabloids of my mind.

I assume Thessaly wrote a fic where Cullen and the FemWarden had much snuggle bunnies and wub.
