Angst and pain = = good romance.

Well, from what she said, only if your idea of a good romance involves being chained in a basement, beaten, (eventually) strangled, and buried in a shallow grave.

Yes, there's nothing romantic about the scenario in my mind. I imagine it would be very quick, very violent, and only undertaken as a way to get her out of his system.

Is it very wrong that that's why I love him?

I kid, I kid, he's mentally unbalanced and frightening. But he makes a darn good subject.

Having said that, I'm pretty in love with Sten, which isn't much better.

Erm, I suppose you could also write a non-romantic fiction. I mean, you could have your work ignored while someone's 1,000 word 'Alistiar blushes and says something snarky/cute' fic garners a dozen glowing reviews.

This has happened to me. My relationship fic got dozens of reviews, but my "real story" that I spent a lot more time on got 2...

I'm glad I'm not the only one who had qualms about writing fan fic... I thought, wow, this is going to detract from my serious writing -- yeah, the serious projects that haven't gotten any attention for the last six months because I was too busy. Funny how I've managed to find time for Fan Fic and now seem inspired to work on the real stuff too... Thank you, DA:O. Maybe I'll get novel number two finished and number one out into the world.

I have the same problem AA. My only explanation is that writing begets writing. The more you write, the more you write.

That's what my husband said. And so, I'm cranking out fan fic and looking forward to the weekend and settling in for a nice long writing session.

I'm definitely discovering that.  I haven't written in years but I figured if I started with the fanfic it might inspire me to do other writing and it has!

Well my fan-fic focuses on the Warden's love for Morrigan than the Warden's love for Alistair. :D

I've also noticed this.  It's a little depressing when you work really hard on something and get very little feedback about it one way or another.

Exactly!! I have a novel finished that I need to work on getting published, the prequuel half way done, a book of poetry and photographs that just needs layout work, and a photojournal I want to do of people that live in the mountains and work in coal mines (need to get that grant proposal written up LOL)... I'm actually looking at this weekend as a writing weekend and seeing about getting everything organized and ready to go for actual accomplishments.

Nothing wrong with that. I drive my guy nuts with the constant writing. I used to love writing then sort of lost my way. I decided to get my feet wet by doing the fanfic I started here. With luck I'll be inspired to do my own work. Lord knows I have enough ideas in my head. It's forming them into something useful that becomes tricky lol.

This thread actually inspired me to write out/post my first fic on these boards. I'm pretty proud of myself and I'll probably post more. :) I'm glad everyone on here is so nice.

Me too!  I love writting, and I've been inspiried so much!  I will write all day, all night, and drives myhubby up the wal.  But the practice I've been doing with my fan fics (seeing as I can't publish them, thats what makes them great for practice. :) ) its been helping me with vocabulary, setting placement, description (although I suck at physical description still, which I am working on with my other FF that I wont release until I am happy with it.).

All these things.  And yes, its an Ali/F!PC romance.  Sorry, it was my first play through Posted Image

The stats don't really surprise me. :) Too bad we can't cull the 300 word fanfics out of the tally, though.

We could.  Doesn't the FanFic.net search engine allow you to limit the minimum word count?

*checking*

Yes it does.  We could limit the search to works of at least 1000 words.

I love reading other people's things as well.  Glad to have you here.  I was reading a book once, and it said:

"Write.  Even if its absolutely the last thing you want to do that day, write.  It's like a sport, the more you utilize it, the more you practice, the better you will become at it."

Hmm, I'd say more like 800+.  The latest one I wrote was just shy of 1k words.  800 words can make an interesting snippet

Most of the shorter fanfics are like the one shots. The ones longer than that are actually like a novel lol. I think mine is over 10k in words now and I've only done like the first part up to Ostagar. My trick to writing and it's probably something others use too is to listen to music. I pick a few songs that suit what I want to write about and play them over and over. It puts me in the right mindset.

I admit, ahem, that I couldn't listen to music today because I did my writing at work... At least it made the day go by quicker. I probably can't do that often though. LOL I kind of need my paycheck.

I think, too, for me, it's being in the company of other writers. I needed to get back into the habit of writing every day as well as talking about it, keeping it in the forefront of my brain. It's great to be around such a supportive group!

Oh, and I only drive my hubby crazy when I DON'T write. I become exceptionally evil and wicked and... Well, pretty much like Morrigan... It's a scary scene.
