Sheryl definitely did not mean to be condescending. Even I found Cullen to be adorable, apart from the whole "I'm-Completely-Anti-Mage-Now-And-I'm-Going-To-Slaughter-Every-Mage-Who-Has-Breathed-In-The-Same-Air-As-A-Blood-Mage" thing.

I know she didn't, I don't get that vibe from her, which is why I said I"m sure she didn't mean it that way =). However, it was, to me anyway.

For me, Cullen was the kinda geeky guy that
had a crush on me in 11th grade. He watched me a lot, but he was just a
shy guy who wasn't going to approach a cheerleader. I didn't think he
was a stalker for watching me or whatever during class. And if you
mention age differences to counter the argument, well, these are very
cloistered characters, and my character is what.. about 20? His is
about maybe 25? Neither with relationship experience.

When I talked to Cullen with my mage, the first thing that came to mind was that he has a crush on PC and was ashamed of it. He was raised by the Chantry to believe that all mages are dangerous, one step from becoming an Abomination at all times and lets be honest, it's not like the Chantry teaches Templars anything that good about mages. So yeah, he is shy for sure, but not only because he's all cute and adorable..  because the thoughts in his head are both alluring and deeply wrong at the same time... imo. It makes him hate himself. And the PC. Cullen is definitely NOT a sweet puppy doll. He has serious issues.

It must've been awful for him to watch someone he longed for, but knowing he could never go near and yet could not leave. No wonder that after being tortured by Uldred something in his head cracked beyond repair.

You got all that from the first time you spoke to him? I don't think Templars are taught that mages are evil, dangerous yes, but not in the-smash it into their heads until they hate all mages-. If you hadn't noticed, Greagoir and Irving had a sort of friendship, it was kinda cool actually. So either the game is really incongruous or Templars are both protector of mages and protector of everyone else against mages.

Cullen's crush is no different than a priest that falls in love with someone. (and I know what you little pervys are thinking *slaps hands*). Cullen is just honorable as far as I can tell, and faithful to the chantry. Nothing at all wrong with that. the fact that he falls in love just makes him human..not a stalker, not creepy and not weird.

If they wanted to convey that he was creepy stalker with tendencies towards whacko crazy, they were wayyyyyyy too subtle.

If Templars are automatically taught mages are evil, why is Al so turned on by them? I just thought he was ridiculously shy. Yeah, it's forbidden, but he apparently prefers being a Templar to anything else.

Honestly I've only ever known Cullen from the Mage Tower quest after Ostagar for one main reason: I SUCK at playing ranged characters. I need to be a rogue or a warrior and even then I'm never an archer of any sort.

But I think I might endure playing through a little while as a mage (especially since blood mage is the only specialization I haven't unlocked yet) just to see these things I'm hearing about here.
Also I find that rock music really helps get me in the mood for writing. Either something really angry and heavy like Metallica or something a lot more tame like Poets of the Fall can really inspire me, especially when it comes to my original work.

I've hit a pretty big road block for that at the minute so I think I'll focus on my Zev/MaleCousland fic to keep my writing up until I can work on that again :)

Perhaps it is not mages that get to him, but rather the taboo? The forbidden?

Who's to say... But, it is amusing to think on the characters' reasons behind things.

I see your point. However I never said that Chantry is smashing hate towards the mages into Templar's head, I simply meant that "fraternizing" with mages at a workplace (haha that's a really stupid way to say it) is not allowed because of the reasons I stated in my previous post. Templar's are taught that magic is dangerous. You can't really compare Cullen to Greagoir, there is a vast age and experience difference.
Also, I never said that falling in love made him creepy weird stalker... But I think that in his head it was wrong, that's all.

During the Tower quest Cullen clearly says that Uldred was using his shame against him.

Anyway, it's possible that our opinions differ vastly simply because mine is influenced by Cullen at the end of the game, whether the PC chose to support him or not. I just don't think that his issues were just conjured up out of thin air by being imprisoned by Uldred. There is always a spark that starts the fire.

Another Cullen fangirl reports. I was surprised that Cullen is supposed to become a psychotic serial mage killer. I found him adorable in the mage origins and when meeting him later, I interpreted his behavior as something that was maybe a real part of his character, but all blown out of proportion by torture and perhaps lyrium deprivation. Sure, he's probably a nutjob after the experience, but I can't see him as permanently psychotic and unredeemable. What fanfics I've read seem to portray his character as much too sweet though, I'd love to read a darker fic about him.

I've never had him go nuts at the end, so I don't know.

I listen to a variety of things when writing. Even Country. (There's something about Tim McGraw's voice...)

You do realize what part of that statement is making me giggle, right? :)

Seriously, though, that is how I saw Cullen too -- a stammering guy with a crush on a girl.  I totally did not get creepy stalker tendencies from him.  Leliana?  Oh yes, crazy I'm going to wear your skin stalker tendencies from her, but so not from Cullen.

I'm really sorry some people were insulted by what I said. I didn't mean to be condescending at all.

Also, when I wrote Cullen, I hadn't heard of Twilight, so any similarities to Edward Cullen are coincidental. I did imagine him to be a young, fairly normal kid torn between his hormones and his duty. Like a more serious Alistair. Later on we decided we needed a templar survivor in the post-Uldred tower, and since people seem to enjoy it when they see people from their past, I decided to make it Cullen. In the beginning, he is sympathetic to the mages, but he comes away very changed by the things Uldred and the demons do to him.

As for the creepy stalker tendencies--er... I think that may have been started by David Gaider's little Cullen Romance snippet. I never imagined him as a creepy stalker.

Malaia wrote...

Well, I don't get the Thane-obsession, or the Teagan obsession, and it has become clear to me that people will want to have romances with/write fanfic about pretty much any character. There is nothing wrong with this. I did not mean to be insulting. God knows I've had my "OMG DRACOOOOOOO!! *heart heart heart drool*" moments. I was expressing regret that I did not realize this at the time of the Broken Circle's writing, or I would have put in a bit more dialog for Cullen and closure for the female mage.

I also don't understand the Cullen thing. I guess I don't go so much for crazy?

Of course, this is from Teagan Fangirl #1, lol.

No matter who people *squee* over, in the end it's a testament to your talent and good storytelling and the amazing attention to detail that makes this game great. It's kind of a Bioware trademark now, yanno! It's also the reason that people want to see more of the small characters: because it's obvious they were written with as much love and attention as Alistair or Morrigan. More Cullen, more Teagan, more Jowan, more Bella, more Isabella, more Cauthrien...none of that would ever be unwelcome, I think ;P

Oh and Kerridan, Garrus???  Yeah his voice is awesome and I did find my pc staring at him a little dreamily on occasion, but the teeth, girl, the teeth!!!  Could you imagine how painful kissing him would be? Posted ImagePosted Image

Sheryl, *sigh* I did write that I don't think you meant it to be condescending or insulting, but perhaps I should say it again =(. Everything I've read by you would give the exact opposite impression, you're always very kind and funny. So I hope that isn't what you come way from my post thinking.

I'll tell you what makes the characters we squee over so exciting...Like Teagan and Cullen...they're affectionate and dorky and Teagan is kind and funny and noble (and not in the I'm the Bann - way), he's sort of how you imagine the knights of old being to women. Very dashing and respectful. Cullen is just sweet beyond words and I'm sorry but I"m GLAD you didnt give closure. He's by far my favorite character because he has so much honor and it tears him apart.

Please Mr. Gaider don't kill me! Not after I offered to marry you, but my problem is with Alistair. At first he's liek the perfect guy, but if you really delve into him and compare him to the other characters, he is like an child with abandonment issues that latches onto anything that is remotely nice. =/ ugh. THis is unhardened *obligatory giggle*. He isn't a man, he's a boy in a man's body...and this seems to be the character all the girls r squeeing for. Now hardenened (*ob. giggle) Ali is much more interesting imo, and I can see myself getting into him again. Too bad I didn't know that first play through or second.. I would have disliked him a lot less. But I have a saying about Alistair that the girls of irc #pwpsmut laugh about... there is only one way I like Alistair.. on his knees with... um...DONT KILL ME GAIDER!

But I suppose I have the same problem with the Morrigan love. I mean gawd sociopath much? rawr.

Anyway...I really hope you don't feel bad Sheryl, but I am glad you responded how you did =).

Oh and @Tas! It was meant to be funny. I hope everyone laughed at that statement. I tend to try and temper humor in my posts because otherwise it can seem like you're smashing your face into the keyboardz going all NERDAGAEGERAGE.

And PS: Thank you for this awesome game which has me writing fics left and right and falling in love with video games again.

I think its great that there are so many people inspired to write fanfic. I believe I said several times before DA came out that I couldn't wait to see the fanfic. I follow the DA section of fanfiction.net quite closely, and the various LJ communities. I used to be a crazy Harry Potter fangirl. Old habits die hard.

This...like all of it!  I personally love writing the smaller characters.  I have to admit, I think Cauthrien is one misunderstood lady and there has GOT to be a great story there.

Also, I'm glad to hear that Cullen was seen as sort of a mini-Alistair.  I've kind of felt if the two of them got together, they would become fast friends -- Templar bopsie twins if you will.
