I think Bioware overcompensated for the complaints about ninjamancing in previous games, and introduced more than one 'are you sure?' prompt with some of the ME3 LIs, with Liara probably being the biggest example.

Despite that flaw and the awkward use of the word 'friend' in one scene, I thought Liara's content in ME3 was mostly well done. If you are fan of the character I don't think there was much to complain about. Although not necessarily romance-specific, I also think the Name in the Stars and Priority-Earth Gift scenes were two of the best companion scenes in the series.

Liara's weakest game in terms of the romance arc was her cameo in Mass Effect 2, prior to the LotSB DLC.

You know, I would love to continue this discussion, I really would, since from what I've seen so far, you're actually one of the few reasonable people around here who is capable of having a civil discussion. Sadly, these kinds of discussions(aka, pretty much anything Liara related) tends to bring out the worst in human and I don't trust my inner troll to be held in check if that happens. And I don't want to turn this thread ugly.

So I'll just say I disagree with you in certain points and agree in others and call it a day.

Could take it to PM if you'd like. :)

Best as femshep: Garrus
Worst as femshep: Jacob alias the priiize
Best as maleshep: Tali or Liara
Worst as maleshep: Kaiden (it just freaked me out, because it came out of nowhere)

I think "bi the way" is the relevant trope.

@Han Shot First
*insert obligatory rant about the unskippable Liara hug*

I was curious; with my latest Shepard I avoided any ME2 interaction with Liara altogether, missing Samara and Thane as a consequence. No noticeable changes to Liara's ME3 dialogue.

When I did a Liara romance playthrough of ME3 I was surprised (considering everything that has been said) that there wasn't more romance-specific dialogue. Mostly the relationship with her felt pretty much the same. Mind you I'm one of the few non-Liaramancers who likes her well enough anyway.

I haven't played ME in over a year but I think I remember this being a thing, and one of my complaints about the romance.  It didn't actually add anything.  But hell if I actually remember.

I thought Kaidan's romance with maleShep had alot more chemistry than femShep. I romanced him in ME1, and saw videos of 3, and I was just unimpressed/underwhelmed. However, hearing Kaidan with Mark Meer's Shep had more sizzle. Might just be my bias, shrug.

I also don't see a problem with "retconing" his sexuality. People come out of the closet all the time at all ages. Maybe space travel made Kaidan understand the fluidity of his sexuality better hehe.

I never romanced Liara, but I watched all the vids. I thought most of it was nice, but I was a little put off by Shep's proposal in ME1 where all Liara had to say was "I knew it, I dont know why but I'm just soo attracted to you". It just felt cheap n cheezy.

Anyway, here's my own chart from best to worst (without Citadel)

Best:  Liara, Garrus

2nd Shelf: Ashley, Kaidan

3rd place: Tali, Samantha, Steve

4th Place: Miranda, Jack

Last place: Thane

Dishonorable mention: Jacob

Jacob's romance is worth doing just so you can slap him, but if you don't have the CItadel DLC, it's probably not worth it.

Kaidan's MaleShep romance was actually pretty good, and it's much better if imported like I did. Kaidan is someone who loves Shepard regardless of gender. Kaidan being bisexual was no surprise since Mass Effect 1.

Oh yes, slapping Jacob was absolutely the best part of his romance!  :D

And as for Kaiden: Please don't understand me wrong, I don't think his romance was bad at all, but it just didn't go with my maleShep. Well, in terms of being the worst romance for maleShep overall I would probably choose Allers.

Shepard proposes to T'soni?

Pretty sure they are just refering to this scene, which frankly is one of the dullest romantic moments ever.

Hear, hear. There are small, but significant changes if you've romanced her since first game and those small differences make it so great.

For all the complaining I'm hearing, I'm not really seeing it. Yeah, the romance could have been done better, but it was great as it was.

A relationship.

Yes that one. Alien or not, if my #1 crush proposed we become more than friends I'd have more to say than just...'yeahhhh, I feel so close to you for no reason, isnt that weird??'  oh well, BW made up for it plenty of times throughout the trilogy.

I question how much of it was supposed to have come from the meldings we're compelled to engage in. Not bashing, genuinely curious; had she even tried that with anyone else before?

I imagine the couple fights with someone who could read your mind while you're asleep could get rather nasty. :)

I think the intent of the Illium cameo was quite good, and it was a decent setup for LOTSB. Shepards and Liara's relationship had experienced its ups and downs, and it adds to the sense that Shepard was truly isolated and alone on some level in ME2...which makes the romance in LotSB and ME3 more meaningful, imo. But it was extremely frustrating when the game came out ;)

Are you talking about those meldings regarding the conduit/reaper visions? I suppose that has something to do with it, but even so, I'm sure Liara could've come up with something more endearing to say about their connection, something more from the heart. I suppose the excuse you can make for her is that she's not very good with words. That moment just pales in comparison to the other moments people had when Shep first suggests intimacy.

Those would be my picks as well and in exactly that order, if I set aside my own personal preferences. I like Miranda more than Tali for example, but I think Tali's romance arc in ME3 (pre-Citadel) was better.

The only thing I'd change with your list is adding Allers to the dishonorable mention tier.

I don't consider Allers a romance.  A fling, at best.

THough in retrospect, Ishould probably add Kelly to the list.  Probably with Miranda and Jack, though at the lower end of that level

Out of genuine curiosity, what do you find so bad about Thane's romance?

Thane's romance was half-a**ed. It was almost completely forgotten by the dev team which why Thane doesn't have that much interaction.

Doesn't help that he dies halfway through ME3. Doesn't leave you much to work with compared to other romances. What they did with it in Citadel DLC was quite nice. Still, he's deaddd.

I would've expected they put wayy more effort into his romance given his entire existence and sexified drell-ness was  mainly so that FemShep could have another hetero alien romance LI

Pretty much this.  They forgot he was a romance option and had to shoehorn in what they could.

Then he dies and is forgotten about entirely.

Better something than nothing, I suppose. The original script didn't really have anything mentioning romance, although, he does play a better role along with Kasumi in the original script version of the Citadel Coup, or should I say, Saving the Hanar Home world.

Thus why I rate his above Jacob's ;)
