I enter the game fine for a short time, can play, save do things and then, the machine switches off.
This has been happening only in Dragonage:Origins, nothing else seems to cause this problem. I have patched the game to 1.02a.

m y first idea will be overheating of either your cpu or your gpu. try using everest or something like this to cheek your temp while playing

Actually, only one component will do that. When you try using either a cheaply made power supply, and elderly one, or a unit below spec for your hardware. Name for us the brand and the model, plus the 12 Volt amperage it offers.
Even quality branded PSUs degrade over time. Of everything inside the PC tower, the shortest-lived parts are fans, but power supplies are also relatively short-lived.
You have been lucky so far; the cheap ones can respond by catching fire, blowing up in a shower of sparks, or melting down in s cloud of really nasty smelling smoke. And in so doing, all too often they take other hardware with them to their grave.
P. S. Not just one dupe of this? You made a triple?

Yeah, that sounds like a PS issue. OP, the other apps you are testing with... are they new games or are they like IE and Word or such? Grab a free demo or anything graphically intesive and play that for half an hour. If you get the same behavior, then it's a PS issue. If not... It's going to be a strange issue.
I assume you've looked in the Eventvwr in Windows?

can you check your power supply and post the chart with the voltage and amperage numbers? that would help diagnose

since xp, default windows behavior has been set to reboot automatically instead of showing a blue screen STOP error. Then they advertised "no more blue screens". I kid you not.
So, in addition to PSU cutout or thermal shutdown, as noted above it is possible you are getting a blue screen of death.

Luckily, it's been easy to change that behaviour back.jundice wrote...

Blue screens have very useful information on them.
