What is the best way to buy Awakening now? I own the PC retail version of Origins, should I buy Awakening on Origin? Is that compatible?

Yes but be careful how you patch... Awakenings installs patch 1.03 - so don't launch the game until you have patched or re-patched to 1.05. I would not use the Steam download though.
