I recently started playing Mass Effect single player again. I was going to pick up some single player DLC, but it seems I can't scan planets. The Y button on the 360 does not appear for any planet I visit. Is there a workaround for this? I'd really like to purchase the DLC, but I don't want to make a commitment when I can't finish sidequests.

The Answer HQ should be better suited to help you. I haven't heard of this bug before, so don't know what to suggest, except reinstalling the game (I don't own an Xbox myself, but there's some degree of installation there too, isn't there?).
I did a quick search on the Answer HQ, but there were only two cases that sounded like yours; one was for the PC and that person's problem was slightly different from yours, while the other provided very little information, which was basically useless. In other words, I think your problem is rather unique and you might have to start a new post about it to have the most hope of solving your issue.
Hope it works out for you :-)

Have you used the "sonar ping" on the Normandy to see if there's actually anything worth scanning there first? Unlike ME2 you can't scan every planet, only the ones that actually hold something of interest.

Has it really been that long since I've played single player. Yes that was the issue, thank you so much! Damn I feel dumb right now.
