OP, tbh, botb holders are as varied as you may fear. some are just really experienced great team players, and yes some of them are laughing at you from behind the monitor. i've met both kinds. i've been wearing the femshep since it came out and have recently put it away for the same reason i put the original away. leeches. makes pugging extremely tiresome when you have to solo waves 9 and 10 on gold KNOWING your teammates have gels because i had the 15 revive medal by wave 6. it was totally worth getting, but not really worth wearing.
rule of thumb: if the botb is reviving you, then you probably got one of the quality players and not an idiot

Don´t want to berate achievement hunters - I even do some of them myself from time to time -, but when you see an Asari Adept with a Widow and a Graal with no consumables, you just know you have an achievement hunter in the team who massively and negatively affects your team. Too much is just too much.

Have botb, don't care about your N7, challenge points, etc. Just be a good teammate, help with the objectives, revive others. Get a little pickier on gold/platinum, as in you need a decent weapon and some consumables.

I can understand the feeling, cause a terrible lot of BotBs I met are just.. well, arrogant elitists.
They may be good, but it's no fun playing with someone like that.

There are different ones of course, but it is a reason for me to not wear mine, I instead go for Nomad or Council Member or Sniper.

gonna have to agree with this one.  it is just another banner. I love love the Council Operative banner and would have never switched to "B of the B" cuz of Shepdude's fugly....then they went and made a Femshep one.  tis hawt!

but it is just a banner and should not be used as an indication of an individual's ability at playing this game.

Technically, BotB is a testament to patience and grinding, rather than "skill". It's just safe to assume that someone who put THAT much time into the game is, in fact, fairly skilled.

One of the best players I know is only an N7 600 because he stopped promoting awhile back, and a lot of his stuff isn't maxed because he doesn't play for weeks at a time before coming back. But he's a damned smart player. Very reliable and almost impossible to lose with.

I've outscored every "best of the best" player I've come across, and usually by a handsome margin!

I bet they are looking at my 180 N7 rating and 8000 challenge points thinking WTF this guy should have my banner..haha

But seriously it is a bit satisfying outscoring these people especially with some lesser kits while they always go for the glitchy paladin or turian ghost with a harrier.

To OP: Just go about your business, if your a decent enough player (sounds like it) who cares if they end up outscoring you or what have you, just get those credits!

Well, I feel insecure using the BotB banner, so it balances out.  If I have it, then I feel about not outscoring everyone, even if my playstyle doens't really lend itself to that. ( I play all classes an change it up also. so there is alot of sub optimal ones).

My record so far is 3 BotB players in one lobby.

Doing all the work to get the banner is not enough to actually make someone 'the best of the best.' Generally they are solid players. Some of them aren't. Some of them are elite, and were probably elite before the banner existed.

It's just a banner.

I'm very close to obtaining this banner myself. Does it make me feel good to have come this far in multiplayer? Sure. Do I really think I'm the best player out there? Of course not, but a lot of the challenges have helped open up my play style. I know I'm a BETTER player for having done everything, just not necessarily the BEST.

And no, I don't care if your N7 is 10 or 10,000, I'll play with you.

Wore mine for a while when the FemShep version came out (yaaaay FemShep), but switched back to the Blood Pack banner because BotB made me feel pretentious.

Honestly, though? Having BotB doesn't mean you're good. It just means you play the game a whole helluva lot and are willing to grind for rewards. I'm still pretty terrible, so I'm pretty sure any jackass who wants it can get it, provided they put in the necessary man-hours.

Don't worry, OP! You'll get there eventually! And remember, N7 ratings and challenge points are less a measure of skill and more a measure of how often people play. I get schooled by people with lower ranks than me pretty much all the time.

And for the record, if it hasn't already been said, some amazing players choose not to do any challenges and that's their right. My girlfriend almost exclusively plays the vanilla female human engineer with a mattock, and she is nearly always in 1st or 2nd place when we play.

I only ever wear my N7 banner because it looks great and took so goddamn long to obtain. And when it comes to other players, proper loadout and equipment impresses me more than some banner that can be farmed on silver for the most part.
