What other series have you been as emotionally invested in as in ME?

They don't have to be a 'fundamental pillar of your life.' But stories aren't interesting if you don't care what happens to the people within them. And if you care...well...that's emotional investment.

I don't need to be emotionally invested to be interested in what will happen and what the main character will do. To me those two things are seperate.

You do need to be emotionally invested to care.

Do you care?

I care, but not because I somehow feel some strong emotional bond for a character. The most I have ever felt for a character is mild empathy, which quickly passed into intriuge of what might happen next.

Curiosity and enjoyable character dynamics are what make me interested in a story, not emotion.

For most of my childhood and teens there was Bionicle, used to read up the lore or any new side-story serials on the website, especially one were a group of some of my favourite villains/anti-villains were forced to work together on a mission that would be a beneficially to the heroes main quest to reawaken the entity that kept their universe running... and was surprised by the twist in 07 that the world they inhabited was actually the innards of a giant robot and then the realisation that the clues to this were present as far back as 01, it then got cancelled in 2010 and replaced by a series aimed at a younger audience which didnt have any interesting characters or have as strong a focus on lore/story as Bionicle had.

then theres Halo... I got teary eyed during the ending to 4 (and IMO I thought it was good for 343i's first game)

Halo 4 had a good campaign, although the didact was a bit disappointing. The spartan ops cutscenes are good but the missions.... No.  Then theres the MP which is a epic fail.

Emotionally invested? None. Mass Effect is the only game in which I've truly cared for the characters and the outcome of the story. The only game that has ever had me close to crying.

Nothing to the level as Mass Effect, though I would say KotOR might've if they ever actually did some of the things they planned for it.

Assassin's Creed could've been, but after Revelations I gave up. Brotherhood was the best of AC in my opinion.

Halo has never really failed me either, though it has had its share of weaker stories. I'm really not one for the Spartan II's. I like the III's and IV's much more. The book makes them seem to invincible. I must be the only Halo fan that didn't like Eric Nylund's writing.

you know. As much as I like halo, one of the things I HATE  is how so much of the damn story is in the books. the only book i ever read was fall of reach, but i hate how to understand alot about halo 4 you needed to read the books.  There are ME books, but the majority of the story is in the game, not the books.

I think it allows the story to not interfere with the gameplay or bog it down with too much exposition.

Caution folks, there may be spoilers.

Final Fantasy, from a very young age.

After that, not so many games have grabbed me emotionally. So I'm ignoring the 'series' designation in the thread title and just giving individual games.

Journey is the most recent. An utterly beautiful game in every sense of the word, only made more powerful by the potential bond you may have with a complete stranger. Still amazing without it. The only game this generation which I consider art.

The Walking Dead I suppose is just as recent. Great storytelling, and making you actually think about your actions and seeing them reflected was distinctly Mass Effect-esque for me. Being a fan of the show helps.

Shadow of the Colossus, in a very strange way. The game makes you feel profoundly alone sometimes, and the mix of emotions that are a result of the very apparent degradation of the main character as he nears his goal, as well as the strangeness of slaying these massive enemies who are not necessarily evil made this one a classic. One of the few games of the PS2 generation which I consider art.

That's it for now, I suppose.

Dragon Age: Origins. But Mass Effect wins by a nose. Maybe because I prefer S.F. to fantasy? On the other hand I didn't have to write an ending for DA which was a plus. :)

There have been a few I have been emotionally invested in over the years, Elder Scrolls mostly and Marvel's Ultimate Alliance 1 and 2, but none this deeply. Only ME series.

Well the books are actually quite decent. They've gotten much better as time goes on.

I personally like the Forerunner novels best.

It's also somewhat strange to see humanity going from near-extinct with their back to the wall in 2552, to pretty much being the master's of space by 2558.

Halo is the only other one I've litterally been holding my breath to find out what happens. Uncharted also got me pretty invested, but I knew that would end well.

However, since I started playing ME I've gotten way more into RPGs (it got me into DA:O), so that may change.

Only KOTOR and Dragon Age: Origins to be honest.

I sorta did for Assassin's Creed 2, and Witcher 2 in some places, but not on the same level.

Suikoden and Shenmue.... it seems that these developers are hell bent on disappointing me since neither of these titles will likely see a sequel.  I wish I had the money because then I'd make them myself.
