One of the greatest games since Baldur's Gate II, and easily one of my personal favorites alongside Deus Ex, the Civilization series, the Diablo games, Jedi Knight II, Planescape:Torment and of course The Baldur's Gate series.
We all know of the game's strengths: the fantastic narrative, the beautifully written and highly complex characters with realistically selfish motives, the simple looking, yet delightfully deep skill system, the highly rewarding and enjoyable combat etc etc.
I just want to mention a couple of things that I found to be the weaker aspects. The first was how the intensity lowered a bit between the battle at Ostagar and the lands meet, when the main character set out to unite the races of Ferelden.
The various quests uniting the various races were quite enjoyable and well put together, but the intensity didn't match the first and latter parts of the game. Yes, there were various cut scenes, and assassination attempts, but more should have been done to remind us of the main quests.
The other issue was the inconsistency in the treatment of elves. The whole racism thing was done far better in The Witcher, while here it really felt slapped on.
One last thing I wanted to comment on is on Bioware's attempt at creating a dark fantasy -- no this isn't a complaint, so don't take it as such. Dragon Age isn't a dark fantasy; it is a high fantasy with a bit of darkness sprinkled on top. Not that there is anything wrong with that. I appreciated it for what the game was, but pre-release hype was the game was a dark or low fantasy, which it clearly isn't.
But yea, those are niggles, and niggles aside, I think Dragon Age is one of the greatest games I have ever played. I have found it to be worth every penny I paid for it, and I intend to play through at least a couple more times.
On a side note, regarding Morrigan, I have to say that at first I was disgusted by her proposal, and told her to sod off. But fifteen minutes later, I began to miss her, mainly because she my attack mage. So I reloaded the game, and this time chose to believe that her intentions were honorable. She did say that the child would have the spirit of the god, before the dark taint... so that's good right? SON OF BHHAAAAAAL!???????
Just finished my first playthrough -- thanks Bioware, that was totally awesome.
