Just played the Volus Sentinel and he is not actually a bad class build. Great support character when playing with a competent team. Key word, "competent".

If you spec into shock on decoys, those melee class enemy's sure don't like them. Just the other day I saw a Phantom stare daggers at the decoy while it shocked it to death.

Decoy doesn't seem to attract much attention... unless you build him with small radius shock. It would work bettter with a bigger shock radius.

That said, on the Sentinel, I only go 3 ranks in Decoy, I go with the 6 ranks on the Combat Drone, because it's more reliable as a decoy and can do ranged damage.

But on my Salarian Engineer, I find Decoy to be effective enough with the shock and explosion evolutions combined with Incinerate for damage.

I just play the Turrian Engineer as an infantry soldier with guided grenades. So not that original in its game play, but it works.

hint: when the only way to play a character is to spec out of a main class power

it is the opposite of working

This. "Competent" is defined by BSN standards, which is the top 1-10% in skill compared to the playerbase at large.

No argument about that from me. That is why I hardly ever play him. I still find myself going back to the original 16 charaters and having a blast. IMO, the original were very balanced, thought out, and funest characters of the game. Well alright, all the characters up to Retailiation were great! It seems like Bioware just used a randomiser to generate the characters for the Retaliation dlc. Not much thought involved it seems.

This.  My friends and I regularly rock gold and platinum with all volus teams.  Often times with four Volus Mercenaries, which make for 8 bowling balls on the map.  :D

Decoy is still usefull if you spec it to correctly match your playstyle.  The volus sentinel can roll and dodge pure melee types, and then take them out with headshots.

So sick of seeing people say "I skipped out of [x] power with the Saboteur and he sucks."

You need flamer or rockets on the turret for a passive detonator or primer that doesn't use cooldown once it is placed.
You need sabotage with recharge speed because it's the best spammable stagger power in the game.
You need homing grenades for direct damage, detonations, and priming for fire explosions.

And if you take any less than six evos of any of your primary combo powers you're gimping your explosion damage.

Skip out on any of his powers completely and you will feel underwhelmed, but the reality is: doing it wrong, BSN. Doing it wrong. L2P.

You probably won't top score consistently as the Vsent is still a support class with weak weapon passives but it's doable in PUGs depending on your teammates and the map.

As for decoy it's used for additional crowd control at choke points, you don't need it more than rank 5 IMO, because the decoy doesn't die as easily as the drone, so the explosion isn't really useful. Rank 5 is a must have though, as you need the shock evo to make non melee enemies focus on the decoy more easily.

Between all this and the melee cloak as well as the heavy melee shield you have a character with high survivability that can heal easily, is capable of crazy CC on a good number of enemies and is also able to deliver decent damage with weapons.

There are no useless characters just useless players. Not all characters are made equal but none are so terribad as to be useless,just means you havn't figured out how to use them effectivly.

Would like to play with you , i am as the Volus Sentinel and you as another Character. You will die more often and will NOT have more than double the points than myself. The Volus Sentinel is NOT useless. Just because you are to close-minded to use it right it doesn't mean its useless.

Decoy WORKS!
Combat Drone can help.
Shield Boost is a livesaver.
Light Melee opens up endless possibilities.

I love this little guy - But off-host he's ****ed because his shield boost doesn't work quick enough.

i tried this build and it was fun and effective.
then i tried the talon like TheAngelKiller's build but with your skills(didnt really like his skill setup) and talon wasnt effective for me, id aim at the head and not alot of damage would occour. 
so i then tried paladin, the talons more accurate brother, with extended mag and heavy barrel armour piercing rounds, and topped the score boards with 120000 and no tight situations anywhere. but i did miss dem fire splosions... so may run paladin, mag, ap mod, incendiary ammo. as an alternative.

so yea this character is good. and i am a changed man as of today.

If you read my earlier posts you will see that I am not close minded. I have played with the Vlous Sentinal and I have topped the score boards. But, if his powers, namely his number one power sheild boost, only works on the host player, then that is not good. Not an inherent design flaw of the character though. Also, running its my level 10 UR's and any character is good as a straight up run-n-gun. All that being said, I was stating that the Volus is worthless because he does not really do what he was designed to do. Partiall because of needing, lag, and ignorance. Ignorance of his true purpose of the ultimate cat and mouse support class. If decoy was like the launch version, this character would be be of the best, if not the best all around class. Hell, if you watch the original designer video of the class intent, decoy was designed to decoy enemies so the Salarain could snipe them. Again, this is to some attack on those of you who like the little bowling ball. I love the Quarain Marksman. Apparently, I am the only one who does.
