Looks pretty sweet, I'm a sucker for these kind of books. Maybe this means we might start getting some more info on the game too, hopefully.

If this is Starkhaven, as was said in the other thread, then Starkhaven looks surprisingly egyptian.

I was reading the scans (well trying ...I think I lost an eye) and it mentions The Death Mages of Nevarra.
Saying mages in Nevarra are really powerful , and hold political power.
Those death mages seem like glorified grave diggers ...maybe they practise necromancy (can't really read that part sadly)

I never heard about this before , I know Nevarra had Dragon Hunter and a strong nobility , that there is a lot of tension between them and Orlais...but I didn't know they were open minded about mages..
I wonder if Nevarra will feature in DA 3 now , or if it's a way to make a more moderate Cassandra.

I might have thought Tevinter, actually.

Nevarra's was the place I'd pegged with egyptian influences.  What with all the tombs and stuff.

Looks cool. :)

edit: That's what I thought when I saw that. Also, female Qunari in light armor with sword. First time I've seen that. Very cool design.

They have a curious way of representing religious figures. So much for the nude Andraste statue in the Black Emporium.

I'll just repost what I wrote in the twitter thread about this, since this is the better forum for it...

This is actually rather strange considering the content of the codex for the 'Andraste in Nude Repose - Invisible' statue in the Black Emporium (Act 1). Concept art is great, and I really like that one, but I would be surprised to see that actual statue in Orlais.

Codex entry: Andraste in Nude Repose - Invisible

Can stone lie with purpose? Can it beckon with raw feminine command, yet shine with an inspiring virtue? That challenge was posed to sculptor Arwand de Glace, artisan and son of Empress Vougiene of Orlais. It was busywork and rhetoric in a time of excess, but answer he did—with the reserves of a nation and a passion unhealthy. His subject? Our Lady, though not as depicted in traditional statuary.

Arwand's mad ambition summoned the form of Andraste uninterrupted by the trappings of war and devoid of the vestments she assumed after death. It was living, commanding, obscene, yet inspired. To gaze upon it was to be enthralled, spiritually and physically. It was the latter that alarmed Chantry officials. They blanched at the thought of Our Lady being possessed of such a base appeal, even as they, too, were drawn.

The work could not be destroyed without threatening the balance between empire and hallowed, so a grave censorship was enacted under the guise of honoring. Enchanters were tasked with extending the ethereal that hides the Fade, drawing it around the form like a cloak. Our Lady remains in the stone and in this world, but mortal eyes are forever denied her treasure and glory. She is veiled in every sense.

As in all things, unintended consequences must vex those with pure intentions. Modesty would have been better served by a thickened sheet, drawn back when techniques were to be studied. As it is, the sculptor's skills are accessible only to an exploring touch, defining the shape by intimate caress. All manner of strange congress has stemmed from tempted hands and the innocent wish for clarity.

—From Art and Shame: Forbidden Wonders of Faith by Foisine de Petitforet, translated by Philliam, a Bard!

That said, it's just concept art.

Why Egyptian? This doesn't look particularly Egyptian to me at all (if you mean Pharaonic Egyptian).

For the rest...well, concept art. By now we know that the final product in DA may not necessarily look anything like it, though sometimes it does. Good thing too, because while some parts look really nice, others look rather bland or even downright hideous.
But that's probably my subjective taste ;).

Otherwise, I think this an okayish piece of concept art, if a bit bland.

I am actually more excited about the book than the game right now. Looks awesome. Trying not to read the pages or look to much at the art. But it's like a drug. Makes me feel really good and I am having a good time.

Can't wait until we can start discussing any new bits of lore. <3

Mostly the stripes I guess.  Also the colours.  Maybe the cat statues, though they're the wrong sort of cat statues.

I am pretty sure this is Nevarra, because as it states in the Wiki that Nevarra draws influence from Egypt by preserving their bodies in tombs just like the Egyptians did. That is the only country in the DA world that seems to draw influence from Egypt, as far as we know. I assume it is Nevarra, unless Bioware plans on taking us outside of Thedas but I see that to be highly unlikely.

Anyways, I really hope to see Starkhaven in DA3 as my female Hawke did rivalmance Sebastian, and I would like to see the "strongest alliance the Free Marches has ever seen" between the Vicountess of Kirkwall and the Prince of Starkhaven and also Sebastian and Hawke's prince baby.  and also some of the other city-states in the Free Marches! Kirkwall, Starkhaven and Tantervale are said to be the strongest/largest cities in the FM, so if any I'd like to explore Tantervale and Starkhaven. Maybe even Ostwick.

From the Wiki:
"The way Nevarrans do not burn their dead, but rather preserve their bodies and seal them in tombs and mausoleums is similar to the cultures of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. The wealthy Nevarrans also start young when they build their tombs, much like Egyptian Pharaohs did. This is the only connection to these civilizations that Nevarra has however, so it is unlikely Nevarra is based upon them."
