If this is Starkhaven, as was said in the other thread, then Starkhaven looks surprisingly egyptian.

Why Egyptian? This doesn't look particularly Egyptian to me at all (if you mean Pharaonic Egyptian).

It actually reminds me of the interior of some mosques. With the striping being brought into the posts and buttresses. Maybe Starkhaven is early Islamic and Muslim related and less the modern fundamentalism. As for Nevarra; that too seems like a mosque without the pillars surrounding the normal central structure.

Striped decoration is late Roman / Byzantine in origin (see for instance the Theodosian walls of Constantinople / Istanbul, and entered western European (see for instance Charlemagne's chapel in Aachen) and Muslim architectural traditions from there.
I can't directly think of mosques with striped pillars / columns (apart from Ottoman ones, a later Byzantine legacy) and some modern orientalist architecture (see the Jami Ul Alfar mosque, Colombo), but they are very common in Italy and also occur elsewhere in medieval European churches. Two examples from my own country would be the Oude Kerk ('Old Church') in Delft, and the Lebuinus (St. Liafwine's) in my birthplace of Deventer (though these are mostly of brick).

Having said that, I think the interior with the lioness statue is probably meant to be 'vaguely Mediterranean', just like the city of Cumberland (never mind there are half a dozen towns in the USA alone with that name  ) also looks 'vaguely northern Mediterranean'.

Cumberland. Image from Dragon Age RPG Set 2.

Wah, looks Italian.

I can see a basilica base form in there. But so many architectual styles rose from the basilica layout or expanded on them. Central dome with a proceeding approach. Large gallery with apsidal linings. The interior would answer more then the exterior.

The 'central plan church' (not a basilica in the original Roman sense, even if it's partly descended from it) dominating the city somewhat resembles the Hagia Sophia in the way it dominates the surrounding city, though this is exaggerated in the case of Cumberland. Also note the complete lack of fortifications in the case of Cumberland (Pilllaaaaaaaaaage! :o ) . Perhaps the artist was really basing his piece on modern-era postcards...

Image IPB

Although the building itself looks a bit more like this 'historicist' central plan church ('koepelkerk') in the Netherlands:

For the rest, tall rectangular buildings aren't exactly confined to Italy, though I understand why people think this with all the picture postcards of Italian cities.

So Nevarra and Starkhaven are vaguely Mediterranean; that was to be expected given that the map of Thedas is an upside down version of Europe. Fine by me, as long as they make it look good.

I prefer this cover. I don't understand why Morrigan is in the front cover now. Fanservice? Maybe. <_<

I adore architecture, but I think we shouldn't forget that Bioware is very loosely basing these places off of real countries at different times. I don't think you can be wrong when you are only looking for inspiration and not history, possibly with there being tombs and such and that most people associate it with Egypt they might just do a loose inspiration from it.

Maybe because Morrigan and Flemeth are going to possibly be important characters to the DA universe.

Or because Morrigan and Flemeth are two of the more recognizable canon characters of the DA universe. I'm a fan, and I'd rather see characters I recognize on the cover. So strictly speaking, in my case, yes, it's fanservice, but not in the way you're implying. But to each their own right?

The face of Morrigan on the cover reminds me somehow of Milla Jovovich

You can put that 'loose' in bold capital letters ^_^.

Personally, I have the impression that a lot of fantasy, sci-fi and videogame artists tend to copy, erm, get inspired by others' work, and popular culture (film, comics etc.) and mix and match this, sometimes successfully, sometimes...not so successfully. I don't see that many examples of good 'direct' borrowing from the real world to be honest. That may be why The Witcher and Assassin's Creed manage to look so much better than most fantasy videogames.

Having said that, I wouldn't mind DA 'borrowing' a lot from AC when it comes to any of its 'vaguely Mediterranean' locales.

Wasn't it a placeholder? Maybe they forgot to update it.

Yes, DG said it was temporary art. I also presume the Russian site just hasn't updated it yet.

There is actually no Russian site to speak about -- a question was asked to the Russian publisher via social network: people were confused by the fact that there is Morrigan/Flemeth cover at amazon, but this dude at the Dark Horse site (he is there still really) and in Russian sample pages. The answer was that this variant (with the dude) was confirmed by Dark Horse and it is going to be final.

I have no idea whether there was some kind of misunderstanding or Russian cover is simply going to differ from the original. To tell the truth, I don't care which one it's going to be, I like both. Just curious about possible reasons for such regional differences.

I just prefered the unknown male instead of a character who is important because....I'll stop now. But you're right. To each their own. ;)

Es...what?
Those late concept art are really good looking.
Wonder if the bridge (is this a bridge?) is part of the Imperial Highway ,the giant statue seems old and in bad shape ...

It's a Free March state I believe, so pretty much the whole city would be of Tevinter origin (this one looks a bit down on its luck though).

That book really does look fascinating.

It's something I would buy in a heartbeat if it was about a game world in which I expected to continue to be an active participant. I think BioWare has made it pretty clear, though, that they are developing future titles for players whose gaming tastes are in opposition to my own, so there's little point in me continuing to whet my appetite for content that probably isn't going to materialize.

I'm liking the desolate, nearly-abandoned vibe I'm getting from Est-watch. If anything DA3 will have really interesting places to visit. And with them putting exploration at the fore when it comes to features, this should be interesting.

I was reading the scans (well trying ...I think I lost an eye) and it mentions The Death Mages of Nevarra.
Saying mages in Nevarra are really powerful , and hold political power.
Those death mages seem like glorified grave diggers ...maybe they practise necromancy (can't really read that part sadly)

I never heard about this before , I know Nevarra had Dragon Hunter and a strong nobility , that there is a lot of tension between them and Orlais...but I didn't know they were open minded about mages..
I wonder if Nevarra will feature in DA 3 now , or if it's a way to make a more moderate Cassandra.

Oh man!  If there was some kind of necromantic specialization in DA:I, I think I would wee myself!  (OK, OK, I know..."The Captain has turned off the sharing light.")

Nice!

Although looking at this image of what I'm guessing is Val Royeaux, it kind of reminds me of how barren and sparse Kirkwall was. But I think I know what bugs me about much of Kirkwall and this image- the buildings and roads just intersect at right angles with no clutter or anything around.. Makes everything look too sterile and like a movie set or something.

Lovely. I especially love the Val Royeaux concept art! Although that statue of Andraste is quite racy! Lol. Hopefully we will be able to visit all of these beautiful cities in DA3, but I doubt we will get that privelage.

Well, it's basically AC2's Venice with just one canal, fancier arches and the serial numbers filed off. But it's a great model to st..., erm, get inspiration from, so I am reasonably pleased with it.
Hideous statue, though. But hey, concept art. It's bound to look better in the game.

Hopefully with a modicum of clutter. I dream of cheesewheels everywhere...;)
