The sticky is very clear on installing the retail version & updating.
ie: you install the OC & then start the game until the first talking, before applying the first patch.
Presumably this is to create the My Documents directories & files before the first patch & any additional campaigns.

1st questions: Why do you need to do that, & what happens if you don't?

2nd question: How did GOG get around the need to do this?
The GOG version gives you no installation options other than where to install the program files.
It has all the campaigns & all the patches applied before you get to start the game & create the My Documents directories.

idk, but i rarely install a big program and it works 'just like that'. Usually i open it up, try a few things, let it crash, open it back up, close it back down, reboot the computer, reboot the computer a second time if I'm feeling skeptical, try a few things, kick up some dirt, give it a slap if its recalcitrant, close it down, open it up, try a few things ...

then it works fine.

I've been kickin', slappin', rebooting, & reinstalling for the past month.
The GOG version when played on Win 7 64, just doesn't save the game properly, leading to unending gamebreaking bugs.

i think its something about the registry (Save files failing to hold quest flags)

But I don't know much about the registry so suggest sending an email to GoG directing them to the forum link and anything else you can find.

I already sent a support ticket off to GOG along with a dxdiag report & they told me it was because I had UAC on.
I disabled it & did a clean install & it made no difference.
I'm just hoping someone will come along & say " I had all of that & I did this & it fixed it."
