I have set up Alister my tank as follows:
!self health 50%< take a lesser health paultice
2self being attacked by a ranged attack (activate shield cover)
3self being attacked by a melee attack actvate shield defence
4Enemy health >75% activate shield pummel

Would it not be better to save two slots by activating them myself at the start of the fight and using those slots for other tactics? I am only at Lev6 so I only have 4 slots available. Also if you use slots for Sustained talents then after the first round it is like you only have 2 slots.

Remember that if you are controlling the character the tactics will not activate. Only when you switch to control a secondary character will the tactics activate. Just setup your tactics to keep your character alive when you switch to another one.
