Why cancel DA2 DLC if DA3 is coming 2014?

They needed to pool their resources, I assume, and having people work on DLC that isn't going to sell as many copies as a new game that needs to come out on a schedule isn't cost effective.

Although I have been critical of certain elements of DA2, I did enjoy the DLC, and was really interested in the Exalted March. I hope that they are using the story from it in DA3, I'll be really sad one day if we hear more about the story, and it wrapped up loose ends from DA2, but we never got to play it out.

As was stated in an earlier post, DAII DLC's just didn't sell. Personally I feel players who made their Hawkes warriors got shafted. I always had the feeling that "Legacy" had a magic bent to it and "Mark of the Assassin" had the whole rogue vibe to it.  Too bad "Exalted Marches" was never released - it would have been interesting to see warriors get their chance.

Well, it's very simple. DA2 is a piece of crap. We knows this. Bioware knows it. No point in wasting anymore time on it.

Speak for yourself, not for all of us. Many players liked the game, and don't need you including them in your hatred of the game.

I know, and it scares the **** out of me. The complete lack of standards for some people amazes me. Sometimes I think these devs could get away with selling **** in a bag as long as it has enough pre-order bonuses.

Personally DA2 is still far better than ME3 if we want to point fingers on which game is not good at all...

You need to calm down. DA2 is a good game, it just lacks in a few key areas (environments, endings, we've all been over this), and it wasn't the sequel to Origins that people expected/wanted.

Had DA2 been released as a standalone product instead of as a sequel to an awesome RPG, it would have been received very differently, and would have been acknowledged for the solid if unexceptional game that it is.

Mass Effect 3 is a brilliant game, if you imagine some extra bits of story and stop playing about 10 minutes before the end.

Because DA2 was recieved so poorly that they would rather bet on the next title being strong than risk losing money on a title noone likes.

Be afraid then, your sorry grognard ways are numbered.

And thank god for that, I hate people with you're attitiude.

As for the cancellation, business-wise it was probably the best move to do, as disheartening as it is. I do hope whatever was planned with Exalted March is heavily implemented as a seperate storyline in Inquisition, we shall see in the end.

It was a shame they canceled the DLC, it was definitely taking steps in the right direction compared to the vanilla game.

Some folks used to say that TOR sucked a lot of staff in as well. I don't know if that's true; no interest in TOR, so I don't know if there's any personnel overlap.

It lacks in almost every single area imaginable. The only redeeming quality it has is it's characters, and two of them (Carver and Anders) were terrible. The story was all over the place, the level design and repetition was terrible, and the graphics and art left much to be desired. Oh, and we can't forget the biggest flaw: Kirkwall.

How can you say it's a good game when almost everything about it is bad?

Well there is one question we can ask,  which BioWare studio was doing the DLC for Dragon Age II at the time, and who was originally working on TOR?

My feeling is that not enough people were buying the DLC so they stopped so they wouldn't lose any money on the adventure.

Objectivity be damned. DA2 is the RPG of the decade... just because. This is the the problem you run into when standards are ignored. Keep in mind that they were also ignored with Origins. That game also suffers from similar flaws.

So...what are your standards and how are they universal?  What makes them objectively sound?

I don't agree that "almost everything about it is bad", that's all. Lots of areas of DA2 could have been improved, but trying to be objective about it, it's a solid game which I can still enjoy replaying, even though the experience is not quite as rich as that of DAO, or some other games that I enjoy replaying.

(Compare to the game of the moment, Colonial Marines, which apparently has poor story, AI, gameplay, graphics, and is full of bugs - that's a bad game.)

I don't really think they're mine. I like to believe that there are standards set in place so that we can judge a game fairly and objectively. For example, repetative environments are generally considered negative, while varied environments are generally considered positive. Despite one's own personal bias, that sort of standard helps to keep a reviewer objective.

I agree that DA2 wasn't a great game and that it was no where near as good as DA:O but it was still a fun and good game. But I would rather them work on DA3 instead of DLC that I have to pay $20 for. It is a shame though.

EA doesn't make a habit of putting cash on something that isn't meeting their expectations. Canceling an expansion in favor of a new project is actually right up their alley. Not something they haven't done before.

Repetitive enviorments however can also be a strength depending on the game. This is why there is no universal standard regarding what is good or bad. Modern parlance on such issues tends to look at a lot of these being bad because they are "outdated". It's like turn-based RPGs are outdated combat mechanics that are too slow, or the 2-D effect sprite graphics used by the many Doom clones out there are too archiac to be fun.

the problem with standards is that they become unwritten rules to something that never adheres to rules to begin with. In the case of Dragon Age II, yeah, the enviornments needed more changes to make them unique, but in the context of the story they also made sense regarding the repetitiveness. It was being in one place for a long time, versus travelling across a continent, so you would be seeing the same streets day in and out within the city. In that regard, objectively speaking one can argue that the enviorments make sense in terms of the storytelling invlolved in Dragon Age II, and don't need to be incredibly varied as compared to say Dragon Age: Origins or previous BioWare games. Wether you see it as positive or negative is a matter of opinion, which is then what we judge.

Everything you just said (aside from the Colonial Marines bit) is subjective. That's fine, but don't pass it off as objective.

Here's what objective looks like...

+ Great characters
+ Improved combat mechanics
- Linear level design with little exploration
- Repetitive levels
- A story that is all over the place
- The Kirkwall prison
- Lackluster graphics and art
- A lack of choice and consequence

Those are all off the top of my head. Now, you tell me, does the bad not outweigh the good?

Putting your opinions into a list does not make them any less objective.

In fairness, I think the issue is that people are forgetting that Origins was a grand epic, but DA2 is a more nuanced story that delves into the calm before the storm.

The two storywise are very different, but this is not a bad thing. Origins was grand in scope but lacked in focus, you saved a town and moved on, you never got to witness the aftermath of your actions.

DA2 on the other hand is focuses on the lives of your friends and family over the space of several years, with the larger scope of Thedas in the background. This is not a bad thing as it allows for more time to focus on the characters and the impact one person can have on a place, and the impact it can have on them.

If we're talking in terms of a straight up, character driven piece, DA2 is probably the better game. In terms of the better story, I'd save the Origins wins, but only because it has a larger scope to it.
