Mine was reading about the "controversial" lezbo scenes in the news and seeing some posters with Miranda in it. I was recently done trying out SWtoR for a few minutes which didn't stick with me, and thought ME was a similar thing except as a mmo (dunno y, just did). So didn't care for it until I saw the youtube vids of Gamer's Poop ME. Went on to [really] read up on it and seemed just like my beloved Dragon Age [Origins]. Went to Gamestop, bought the whole Trilogy.

First thing I saw was the launch trailer, I was... indifferent, to be honest. However, I then saw my brother and a friend playing it, during an uncharted world mission. I saw the exploration with the Mako and that got me intrigued. I borrowed the copy, and the rest is history.

I knew nothing about it when I got it. Just walked into tesco with a tenner, saw it on offer and thought "why the hell not?" It remains to this day, the best why the hell not decision I've ever made.
If I remember correctly, this was a week or two before ME2's release, so I didn't even have to wait for it.

I saw the Mass Effect 2 launch trailer and was like "Damn, it feels like I'm missing out on some good stuff."
I was wrong.
I was missing out on one of the best gaming trilogies in my gaming history.

I was underwhelmed by what some people were saying, didn't think it would be any good (so many people say great story, but are way wrong). Then, a couple years ago, my friend gifted me ME1 on Steam. It is now almost 3 years later and I have ME1+2 for Steam and Xbox, all DLC for Steam (I didn't do appearance packs or weapons packs for Xbox
), ME3 for Xbox, and well over 700hrs of gameplay for all 3 games on varied systems. Also, fully completed all achievements on Xbox for ME2+3 (for 1 I have to keep playing with a specific character the whole time... I changed it up too much in the first 3 playthroughs... ME3 keeps knocking me off of completed with the DLC achievements lol)

Never heard of ME until one my friends was raving about it after buying his copy. I was stubborn and heard the word "shooter" and refused to listen. After a while I guess I calmed down and he started talking about the other things the game had and it interested me. So he put the controller in my hand and let me have a go at it. I was instantly hooked. I was barely into the game before wondering how different things would be on a second playthrough when I made different choices.

I saw the launch trailer back in '07 and thought "Its my birthday and this looks awesome so why not?" Totally worth it. And yes, Mass Effect was released on my birthday, best present ever BioWare!

It was when ME1 was supposed to be console exclusive... For a Bioware game, i can't say that i wasn't desapointed.

A friend mentioned it, said it was good. I bought ME2 for $20 bucks, then played for about 168 hours of the next month.

Back in 2008 I was round a friends house and he was telling me about a new game he got from "BioWare, the guys who made KOTOR", now KOTOR being my all time favourite game I was intrigued. I watched him play it on PC for a bit and thought "Meh, looks alright. Relies on KOTOR a lot though, I'll buy it later when it's cheap." Then towards the end on 2008/start of 2009, I saw the Limited Edition of Mass Effect 1 for £20 in GAME, and decided to give it a try.
Needless to say it was one of the best choices I ever made gaming-wise.

Saw an article in gameinformer covering both Mass Effect and Halo 3, I was more interested in Halo 3 so I paid that article no mind. Couple years later my friends were raving on about Mass Effect 2 so I just got and played the first, loved it, played the second, loved it and the franchise even more.

Mid 2010, a friend of mine over Steam recommended it. I had played few RPG's at the time, and even though I'd heard a lot about Mass Effect I had never been interested. It was, incidentally, during a Steam Sale and both ME1 and ME2 were on sale.
I decided to try out the ME2 demo, to get a feel of the mechanics and the tone of the world in general. I saw the opening sequence and immediately quit the demo. I needed no more convincing. I bought ME1 immeidately and, as someone said above, the rest is history.

I saw the presentation at E3 in 2006 and wanted to play the game ever since.

I was excited when they first showed it in 2005. That and Oblivion is what made me want a Xbox 360.

I saw the early production videos and was impressed with the digital acting. Was on my radar at that point.

Same here. Funny how different it looked. I remember being impressed with being able to interrupt someone in mid conversation ("Shepard" roughed up "Garrus", in the teaser, I recall). I remember being disappointed when its release got delayed from June to November.

Followed it's developement from the very beginning as I was a huge KOTOR and Jade Empire fan. Bought it day one. It's been my favorite gaming franchise ever since.

My first exposure to Mass Effect was a review of the first game on X-Play.
I don't remember too much of the details on it, but IIRC they gave a fairly glowing review of what was essentially a third-person shooter/RPG hybrid that you could effectively play as a first-person shooter/RPG hybrid instead, if you wanted to.
I was intrigued, but had no console or PC that could handle it at the time. Still, it never quite left the back of my mind.

well, there was a time when I downloaded everything new on Torrent, so I saw ME2 And played and loved... Then, I bought ME to import the events to ME2 for a completely new difference. Then I became a fan of the series

I needed new games badly and I was browsing for nothing in particular.
Saw both ME1&2 on a shelf and bought them.
I was apprehensive at first because I'd never liked shooters and it's what I'd though the genre was at a glance.
After playing I wholeheartedly fell in love with the games. It's one of the best franchise's I've ever played!
It also got me into sci-fi. Oh, and I'm no longer bothered by third-person or fps games.
There are a lot of games that I like now that I'd never have considered playing without Mass Effect.

Wow that was a long time ago. I actually got it by chance now that I think of it. I remember walking into Gamestop back in early 2008 (I think) and I happened to see these 2 games that looked kinda cool. The 2 games were Mass Effect and Bioshock. They were both rather cheap but I only had enough cash to get one so I flipped a coin. Landed on ME. If I were to meet my past self at that instant, I would tell myself; "Screw the coin get Mass Effect you will love it to death!" I eventually got Bioshock a few years later so didn't loose out on that either.

I first heard of Mass Effect in late 2010 - yes, 2010 - when a co-worker of mine had gone ape**** over LotSB.
He told me the condensed story of ME1 and while I wasn't at all impressed, I agreed to give it a shot. Got my copy, installed the game, created my ugly as sin Shepard and started playing.
Boy did I hate it the firs time around. I must admit I didn't "get it" at first so I had no idea what I was doing (the stiff combat wasn't helping one bit either). Dropped the game like a bad habit for months and THEN, one random night in 2011 someone, don't remember why, sent a "New Divide" Youtube video featuring cutscenes from ME2.
I was so blown away that I started ME1 from scratch (but this time with FemShep since Meer's voice was killing the experience for me) and it has been a ride ever since. Beat the game, bought ME2 like 2-3 days later, all of the ME2 DLC (except Arrival) was discounted on the XBL Marketplace that same week and the rest is history as they say.
And to think it took a vfan ideo of Linkin Park :
Linkin F*ckin' Park.
