I saw some development footage of ME1 on G4 and hunted down the related videos, so I was intrigued before the first game was released. After it came out I watched a full Paragon and a full Renegade playthrough on YouTube before hunting up a used 360 on eBay.
Yeah, ME was the "killer app" that got me to buy a 360.

It never caught my attention on a store shelf. I remember seeing it and picking it up to read what it was about. First thing that crossed my mind was meh. Now when I saw some teasers for ME2 I though that looked cool. So went back to see if I could find ME. Found it on Steam and loved it ever since. Figured a smart thing would be to start at the beginningWas finally able to get a hard copy of ME with the Trilogy.
Just like Deadspace. I grabbed DS3 off Origin but won't play it until having picked up DS 1&2 and played those first.

I actually rented it in 2009 when I first got an Xbox360, I really didn't want to play it because I wanted to play Xmen origins. I got bored with my 360 and later on that year I bought the game and I beat it in 30 hrs and I felt like that wasn't enough so I replayed it again and it took 66 hrs and I just loved it. I ended up with 6 playthroughs all over 50 hrs each.
Bioware was hyping Mass Effect 2 and I fell in the hype and thought that it would be the greatest game ever and after playing that I also loved it and bought all the DLC's except for arrival & appearance packs, in total I beat the game 9 times.
Then came Mass Effect 3 and that is where I want to stop talking about mass effect.

I thought it'd be boring like halo. Also I couldn't afford an Xbox or PlayStation at that time, nor did I see any reason to get one.
Then in summer 2010 hot off metroid m, I got one and borrowed me2 because a friend said I'd like it. Walking into afterlife for the first time sold me forever. Then got a ps3 and now here we are.
Though the Xbox and games were sold to my boss, I do have the ps3, the me3 collectors edition and the trilogy box.

Well, for me it was like this:
I just finished all the games that I liked (my games need to have both gameplay+story, so I am very picky with them, and I won't play just about anything) and replayed them to death. So I check the interwebs, read about ME1, saw gameplay, it SUCKED! saw ME2 gameplay, I said, okay looks decent, I'll try it. Started ME2, BOOM Normandy SR1 goes down! Shepard revived, Omega. I liked Omega so much that I thought, WOW, this game is awesome, I wonder what the first game was like. So I immediately got ME1, played it, found out about exporting save, imported in ME2, played the **** out of ME1 and ME2 till ME3 came out and ending broke my heart. To this, I consider Mass Effect 2 the greatest game I ever played, and don't care what anyone else says 'bout it. It was just on a whole'nother level.

I didn't know much about mass effect back in 07 - didn't read any of the reviews or watched any of the commercials for it. I just finished playing Bioware's Knights of the Old Republic games which were awesome at the time and saw this ME at the store. It looked decent and the summary had me interested. I would up buying it as a Christmas gift for myself and the rest is history as I have all three titles.

I was mostly just a casual gamer back in 2007. I had some extra cash, so I picked up Mass Effect and Bioshock on a whim. I became so engrossed in Mass Effect that I didn't get around to playing Bioshock for a good six months.
Wow, two great games on one spectacular whim.

Saw them on steam, looked straight past them as I thought they were generic sci-fi shooters.
Got the free copy of ME2 with DA and proceeded to play late into the night. From that moment they ranked as some of my all time favourite games.
Makes me wish I'd played ME1 sooner and played the series in chronological order, though. I remember wondering who the hell Cerberus were and why they had such a bad reputation. And also wondering when I'd see that hot asian looking guy

I knew next to nothing about it. I'd made an off-hand comment to my dad a few weeks before Christmas of 2008 about how I wanted a new sci-fi game but didn't know of any. Now Mass Effect is one of my favorite series of all time.

Steam sale, ME1 + 2 about 20$... best decision I made as this trilogy is easily one of the best franchise I ever played; even bought boxed edition of the game after ( I like to have my game in a physical format )

A guy at work told me about "an amazing new Bioware franchise". He knew I loved Kotor and Jade Empire, so it was a pretty easy sell. Then he showed me a HD YouTube video of the Shadow Broker confrontation and resolution in LotSB.
I went and got ME1 pretty quickly after that!

I somehow stumbled across a picture of Nihlus and was instantly caught. Checked out a couple of screenshots of the game (wow, that's some portals!) and bought it on Steam.

Was bored of playing AC:R, so I decided to have a look at what games were on sale. Mass Effect caught my interest due to the RPG element (the cover also looked decidedly different from the other games available), so I decided to get it. As a person who, at that time, didn't like shooters of any sort, Mass Effect took me by surprise. The fact that I could customize the character I was going to play for the next 30+ hours added to the experience. Ultimately, the game (and its sequels) was better than I anticipated.

After playing through Kotor and splurging all over how awesome it was, I subscribed to BioWare's newsletter. They kept sending me info about Mass Effect, and all I could think was "This is so bland" and how much it ripped off of Star Wars. I think the game had been out for like 6 months or something when I stumbled upon a video of the Vigil conversation with Femshep, Garrus and Wrex.
It was pretty much instant buy after that.
EDIT: Avatar is relevant, it was my face after the 15 minute video.

Weird to think about how many years ago it was, now.
I was just browsing through the games at a supermarket, had no actual clear intention to walk away with a purchase. Had played and loved a ton of point´n´click adventure games (The Longest Journey is still gold in my eyes and I´d rather not talk about Dreamfall...). Then some Space Quest, Myst, Deus Ex + IW, Thief, Hitman. Mostly old and ye olde games.
So I saw ME and was hesitant to pick it up - the company name had no special meaning for me because I paid little attention to new games, trailers and such. I wrote off the "immersive, open-ended storyline" as PR-talk and was simply afraid that it might be just a shooter (hey, Hitman is a...sneaky shooter. Emphasis on sneaky).
Man, that was a close call, heh...
And pardon the lenghty tripping down the memory lane. Recalling it has made me nostalgic.

I saw the cinematic trailer for ME 2 on tv, went out and bought an xbox 360 the next day, then purchased a pre owned copy of ME 1 and played them in order.

My brother bought it on sale at gamestop in 2008 for the hell of it. We played it, thought it sucked in the first 5 minutes from how much dialouge there was and how clunky and crappy the controls were.
Left it alone for about 2 years, maybe longer, until I saw the trailer for lair of the shadow broker. It looked cool, and finding out it was for a sequel of ME1, and seeing how much better the game looked now than ME1, I decided to give the game another shot.
Dusted it off, made a new character, this time with understanding of what the descriptions for the classes meant and about weapon selection and power upgrades and such (This was my first rpg ever, before I had only played shooter games), and managed to get past the edan prime level and see the story really take off.
And I was hooked from than till now and beyond.

I remember hearing about it, but knew nothing about it until I went to a store and saw one in sale and I knew that ME3 was being produced, so I tried it to follow the story in preperation to the ME3.
Got ME1 loved it, got the ME2 liked it even more, got DLC for the two and preorder ME3.
Same thing happening again with me and Dragon Age now.

After viewing this trailer ?
Really BioWare? Another "ancient evil"? Since I had just finished playing Neverwinter Nights and Knights of the Old Republic I was like what again? But I love Mass Effect, and Mass Effect 2 is my favorite game.

I somehow missed all the pre-release marketing and just sort of randomly picked up ME1 one day at GameStop in 2009. Little did I know I was beginning my journey into my #1 science fiction series of the decade (and still ongoing).
I'm a little embarrassed, to be honest.

I honestly can't remember. I remember hearing about DA off of...I think it was /GU. Checked out the trailer and was blown away. I'm thinking I probably heard about ME while flitting through DA's forums. Liked DA a lot, probably bought ME in the hopes it'd be as good. And, it was, so luck was with me. But I've been racking my brain, and I honestly can not remember. Maybe it's senility. Gods, I hope not.
First time I heard about ME? Honestly can't remember. What's that? Hold on, got some dang whippersnappers on mah lawn....who ya callin senile?!? Why in my day we didn't have old senile guys yellin at us and bein all random like!

When I learned of ME1, I was excited that someone decided to make something like Star Control 2 but it didn't quet met the goal in my eyes... And subsequent games went event further from SC2.

Saw the ME1 trailer, thought it looked like crap. Next day went to blockbuster to rent Assassin's Creed there were no more copies so instead I went home with ME1. It turned out to be a great game, so I bought it once I had to return the blockbuster copy. Been a fan ever since.

I read a praising review in a Finnish gaming magazine and thought that the screenshots looked too 'complex' with the power bar etc, and graphics were bad (I was an FPS and graphics fanatic back then). But I decided that since it's SO praised, I mean, the reviewer wished he could get amnesia so he could experience it again as a fresh experience! and after launching the game and on hearing the vigil theme, I was sold solely based on that feeling.
