I have been playing through the game to level 10 with a duel weapon warrior and although I love the game am thinking of trying again as an arcane Warrior, something I never do in games as I'm always a warrior and not a mage. What I could with knowing is are there any problems that I should be aware of as an arcane warrior. Should I avoid being in the middle of a mob of enemies or is the magic spells weaker than normal, or am I able to cast few of them. Basically is the game easy or hard as this class compared to some of the others?

Arcane Warrior is over-powered so with a proper build the game will be easier ;)

Some tips:

1) Always activate your sustainables last. So start by using as many spells as possible and then activate your sustainables.

2) As a main tank, wear massive armor and use dual-wielding (offensive tank) or a weapon&shield (defensive tank). As a caster, wear robes and use a staff.

3) Shimmering Shield is going to be your favorite spell. It deactivates when you have no more mana left so try to use it only during difficult battles.

4) Must-have spells: Mana Clash (enemy mages), Winter's Grasp, Cone of Cold, Heal

5) AoE spells: Virulent Walking Bomb or Storm of the Century (Spell Might + Blizzard + Tempest) or Death Cloud etc.

Arcane Warrior puts the game on easy mode, even if you're playing on Nightmare. If you go Arcane Warrior, also pick either Blood Mage or Spirit Healer. Avoid Shapeshifter.

Actually avoiding Shapeshifter is good advice for any mage character.

Does that mean that I'll need to change clothes/weapons during battle? As that would be annoying after a while?

Haha :D

You don't have to change clothes/weapons. As an Arcane Warrior there are simply two roles you can fulfill. You can be a tank or a caster. It's your choice.
As a tank you wear massive armor and use spells like Shimmering Shield, Rock Armor and Arcane Shield.
As a caster you wear clothes and only use Shimmering Shield when you're attacked (which isn't supposed to happen).

Some people wear medium armor as an Arcane Warrior because they think it has a better fatigue/protection ratio.

So would it be bad if I was to try spells like Chain Lightning, Inferno whilst wearing massive armour?

Not really, no. You'll just burn through mana very very quickly.

Playing as an AW was sooo much easier than playing as a Warrior. I killed 1199 things (so close!) as an AW compared to 921 as a Warrior. I was a tank AW.

I especially liked the Cold Spell tree as it allowed for Shattering and Virulent Walking Bomb is, IMO, the most awesome spell in the game. Visually, tactically, gruesomely awesome.

I also used the Paralysis Spell tree and the Death Spell tree to great effect. Usually my enemies were severely damaged by the time they arrived at the pointy end of my sword.

IMO, for a tank AW, Wade's Superior Dragonboneplate is the massive armour of choice. So helmet requirement, and as a set it provides the benefits that the Blood Dragon Armour provides plus the Item Set bonus. If you're going to mix and match armours, use the Blood Dragon Armour. That extra mana and -% Fatigue is crucial.

Fair enough, I suppose that another reason why some people have been using medium armour than, trying to get the best from both sides of things.

Was planning on having a tank (Alistair), a healer mage (Morrigan) and rogue (can't remember name) to go along with my arcane warrior.

Mousestalker - is your character named Rica done on a solo game?

Mostly. There are parts of the game that can't be done solo (Gauntlet, Anvil of the Void)

Ahh I wondered why your kill count was so high :P

Not sure if I'd want to solo it, I quite like having a party and I guess solo is more frustrating as you need to be more tactical and think every encounter through.

Ok, a couple other things I've forgotten to ask:

What level are you usually at when you get to be an arcane warrior?

Do you need to be a certain race?

Depends on when you want to go through that storyline. I've done it first and I've done it last. It's not hard either way.

Just need to be a mage.

or if you have done the elves part on another character (and unlocked it on there, as a mage or not) it carries it along to another save i think, well it did for me at least as it was already unlocked for my mage.

That is true as well.

I hadn't done that part so sadly not an option for me.

Wouldn't that make it easier though to have the specialization from the start?

Much easier to have the specialization from the start. I tend to find myself at level 6/ close to 7/7 by the time I leave Lothering, meaning the first spec point is already there, or around the corner.

In parts where I can't solo the game, I just turn off tactics on the other chars and put them on hold. If they're pulled forward by cutscenes, they die pretty fast anyways.

Yep. I suggest running through Brecilian right after leaving Lothering and just get to the ruins part and unlock AW. Leave the rest of the quest for later. Don't touch the Revenants at level 6!

Thanks for the answers guys and gals

I won't be getting it from the start, it wouldn't feel right using something from one save game to help another.

I think I want to try and do a solo run of the game with an Arcane Warrior. They really are a bit over-powered, but fun!
