Sorry to burst your bubble.  You need a better video card, or lowered settings.

An 8500 is for business, not for games.

In order to avoid reducing the screen resolution to as coarse of a setting as low end cards require, you need at least a Mainline Gaming Card, which has an "n600" and upward performance code in its name, not mereley an n500.

The generational markers are the confusing part.  I was thinking about your question, and looked at the part of NTK's rankings I included in my "Ladders" article posted here:

          o Radeon X800 GTO & Radeon X800 GTO² (256MB version for either)
          o GeForce 6800GT
          o GeForce 7600GS
          o GeForce 6800GS (128 MB PCI-express version)

Below this point are cards in the Dragon Age: Origins minimum area

          o GeForce 6800GS (AGP version)
o Gigabyte 3D1 (two 6600GTs on one board)
          o Radeon X800 & Radeon X800 GTO 128MB
          o Radeon X1600 Pro & Radeon X1300 XT
          o GeForce 8500GT
          o Radeon HD 4350
          o GeForce 6800 (AGP)

In that list, your card is 5th in line below the minimum.

An important thing to consider with the 8500GT id that despite the numbers which confuse a lot of people, it's not a gaming card and is actually almost 50% less powerful that the 8600GT which I would consider the minimum card required to play this game ( or the 7800GT/s 6800 Ultra from previous generations which rank similarly to the 8600GT )

Incidentally if anyone is looking for a cheap card that will smoke this game there is less than a day left on my 8800GTS ebay sale.

Yeah I'm the seller. It's UK only and will be expected to go at around £45 I expect. I played my foirst game of DA:O on that very card and completed the whole game with no related issues ( had some DLC issues ) on full game spec.

However because of the nature of the game and its oddness in different systems I'd make no guarantees.

As I said. I'd consider the 8600GT minimum spec for this game. I played it on an XFX 8600GT with no problem but that was a XXX factory overclocked version ( that I sold on ebay last week )

New 8600 GT cards are somewhat difficult to find any more, nearly three years after they were brand new. There are still 9500 GTs available, much more readily. The entire Geforce 9n00 series, with anly a couple of exceptions, was only the same 8n00s, with new names, on new, thinner wafers. Mostly, they dropped the performance digit one counter, although the 9600 GT was sired by the 8800 GT (just fewer shader units, and slower RAM). The 9500 GT breaks that Mainline gaming name rules in a way, unless you keep its parent number in mind.

Personally, I've lost my previous respect for nVIDIA's graphics, due to their shoddy ethical practices, and make it a habit to promote ATI's Radeons. Overall, ATI pricing is far better for a given level of performance, than is true of Geforces. The HD 4670 continues to sit atop the Bang for a Buck value over a year after it was released.

I've never tried ATI , a friend recommended me nvidia ... and I followed his advice:lol:

Well until you get the card, try running the game with the frame-buffer effects unchecked in the options. This seems to be pretty much bloom from cloud effects and some gamma correction. I also use an 8500 GT 512MB card and can run it at top video options minus that checkmark with little lag cept where cloud effects come into play. You can also try looking on sites like newegg.com or tigerdirect.com for deals, I catch a few from them at times when I need to build a new rig or upgrade an older one.

I'm not sure what I'd recommend. It would depend upon your budget. There was a time when i would not buy anything other than ATO and I'm still a fan. However you have to pay a decent amount of money for top end performance. For instance. Gorath likes the HD4670 for price / performance but I'd never consider it. It euns like a dog in comparison to an Nvidia 9500GT and I wouldn't put the 9500 in one of my systems either.
Second hand is where the deal are. You can buy a used 9800GT on ebay for the same money as the 4670 cost ( even if you could find that ati card new now ) and that's a massive boost in performance.

You see Nvidia did a bad thing. They brought out the new '200' series cards ( gtd 220, GTX 250 etc ) but kept quiet that they were very little more than 9xxx series rebaged cards. This however had an unusual effect in the used market. Thousands of fanboys wanting the latest thing could not wait to put their 9 series cards on ebay and get a new toy which means that for people not needing the cutting edge in gaming ( but still after top performance in today's games ) there are a truckload of 9800GT / GTX which are less than 12 months old and going for a song.
I picked up 2 9800GT, the Zotac factory OC editions to put in an SLI system for £100, that's about $160.
There are cards out there which are a bargain and new is not always the answer. For instance that card I'm selling was a $500 card at release and even though it's 3 years old it still copes with all thrown at it and will sell for about $70.

All I can say is do your own research but for me ( and I spend thousands on graphics cards every year ) the best bang for buck is in the used market and especially in the Nvidia market where fools are selling their old cards to buy a replacement which is almost identical albeit with a different designation.

Good luck though :)

Btw, this game doesn't require something incredible to play with medium-high settings.. I have a nVidia GTX 280 that has been defective and it is in the process of being exchanged and all.. so gotta wait a week or two before getting it back. In the meantime I am using an older ATI x1950 PRO with only 256 mb of Video Ram... I was really surprised at how well I can play this game.

I can play the game at 1920x1200; with Graphics Details and Texture Details at HIGH setting, I also have Frame-Buffer Effects ENABLED, I simply switched AA (Anti-Aliasing) OFF. Naturally, my pc has pretty good specs, which helps alot..

My point was, look for an ATI x1950 PRO or XT, it's still pretty decent and won't cost an arm and a leg..
anyways, if you need a hand in deciding on graphics card, let me know, I've built quite a few computers. While I haven't used all the video cards on the market, I try and keep updated with the prices overall.. may depend where you live as well.

And to help you further, here is a comparison chart for video cards you should look at.. (try keeping any choice you make in the top half).
